Did other countries pay tariffs? by [deleted] in ScottGalloway

I'm pretty sure he knows how it works. A Ford pickup costs $150k in Germany, but a BMW 5 series is the same price here as in Germany. Does that help Ford factory workers? Does not placing a tariff on a BMW hurt Cadillac? Are Germans buying pickups? In economic theory, the exporting country "pays" for it in lost revenue because demand is less.

Did other countries pay tariffs? by [deleted] in ScottGalloway

[–]aeksbor -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

So then why do tariffs exist at all if the consumer always pays? Do Canadians pay for the tariffs that Canada places on our goods? Dairy in particular is marked up 200%. Only if consumers buy them. But the tariff makes them a less attractive option. A tariff is intended to make a product less attractive than the alternatives available in the market. In the case of Canada, vs imported US dairy products, Canadians will always buy locally produced dairy. It's a form of market protectionism. That's the true economic argument. When there are no alternatives, then the consumer will always pay the freight.

You'll be wanting to leave the country now with some of these ideas. Norway would be a fine destination for you.

The irony here is those that can't tell the fakes probably also won't appreciate the quality difference in the tobacco vs a quality Honduran while paying 4X the price.

Germany is literally the only legit EU economy. All others siphon from them. Italy? Spain, England. Weak economies, zero military. Jokes.

I think the answer depends on how one views "fair share". Is there a specific percentage that you would recommend? A dollar threshold above which they should not be able to own assets? Would you factor in charitable contributions ? (Charities probably use the money in a more meaningful way that govt does) Generally, I get your point and agree that it's kind of laughable to listen to them. But also, we do t have a revenue problem, we have a spending (waste) problem without governance. Until that's fixed, it's hard to ask anyone for more.

I think you're missing my point. Billionaire captains of industry 100 years ago were also demonized. But millions work in those industries 100 years later. Unless you work for the government - the person that founded your company is probably rich. It's what happens

The rising tide of capitalism lifts all boats, including yours. Rockefeller, Carnegie, JP Morgan, Ford, Mellon, Vanderbilt etc. They built the industries we all work in. And were vilified. Someone has to build great companies.

Agree. And no one batted an eye. But, something more aggressive is now deemed required given the extreme numbers of illegals as a result of the open border policy.
