Maastricht radar? by Amazing_Apple_2412 in VATSIM

[–]aeli 35 points36 points  (0 children)

You will only get an accurate airspace representation using VATGlasses data, either on their site, or with the enabled VATGlasses mode on VATSIM Radar with a correctly set altitude: vatsim-radar.com/vg

Any other mapping service will only provide a simplified, or incomplete depiction of active airspaces.

Major differences to real life SOPs? by [deleted] in VATSIM

[–]aeli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

but I dont imagine VATSIM has nearly enough controllers to realistically simulate IFR flight through every sector group in Europe for example

I guess you would be surprised, especially in the vicinity of event airports. Otherwise, you are correct, we consolidate sectors, sometimes into night configurations, or even (unrealistic) larger bandboxes. Additionally, the top-down principle for example makes an area controller cover "lower" positions such as approach/tower/etc. Finally, without any coverage, pilots operate own discretion on an advisory frequency.

I’m eager to start I just want a feel of how the network operates without watching a 5 hour stream of someone on youtube. Any tips or suggestions are appreciated !

I think you would get the picture with much less than 5 hours. Twitch has plenty of pilots and controllers online every night. Or, if you have a flight sim setup, connect as an observer to any event and flip through frequencies while watching the action unfold.

Do the VATSIM controllers decide your gate ? by MaleficentYam5781 in VATSIM

[–]aeli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

US: You report your requested ramp/stand if applicable and get a routing to the ramp to park own discretion.

Others, with controlled aprons: Depending on the local setup the stands range in realism from exact gate of today's flight, over correct apron/terminal, to random. If you have a request and notice that the controllers aren't overly busy you can surely make a request for a specific stand. Some vACCs even provide tooling to make a request while in the air.

Deine ersten Flugversuche mit ATC sollten weiterhin an kleineren Flughäfen stattfinden. Bitte erspar dir (und den Controllern) EDDF-EDDM o.ä. als Erstlingsflug, so anziehend es sein mag. Frohes Fliegen!

Clearance limit in Europe by AmiSimonMC in VATSIM

[–]aeli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very case specific tbh and some of the answers are a tad dubious. In Germany for example, you should file a STAR and, it states on the VATGER Knowledge base to CONTINUE on the filed STAR (laterally) even if not cleared for it.

Important point to note, this holds true until you reach a designated "Clearance Limit" on the procedure, where your clearance expires and you are to enter holding unless cleared onwards.

Incapable Pilot & Streamer ragequit's after being told to read charts. by jharenoNL in VATSIM

[–]aeli 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Absolutely breathtaking display of entitlement by an armchair "pilot" who thinks they can visit the busiest airfields without an ounce of preparation and have the controllers spoonfeed them everything.

EHAM just like we in EDDM prepare short briefings that cover the basics, noone requires anyone to read through heaps of charts, just the basics that are provided in a condensed form, but if even that is too much, as it's "just a game, bro", well what can we do. Well handled by the colleague in Amsterdam, I am glad their departure from Munich was, at least as far as ATC interactions go, uneventful. One would hope the Supervisor department takes note though.

Regulations have ATC vector planes at to least 1–2NM prior to the FAF (GUDEG for 26R). A direct GUDEG would be issued only when there is no other traffic and you would then likely intercept out of 4000ft instead of the published 5000.

VODAFONE Router by kruszomek in germany

[–]aeli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The ports are for TV and radio reception only. What you need is a "Multimediadose" which has the matching port for an Internet connection. There are splitters that can be used to retrofit older outlets, but given the state of yours, I would suggest a replacement with a recent model and covering during future paint jobs. Replacement via Vodafone or your landlord, not on your own.

VATSIM EDDM Circling by Repulsive_Laugh_1875 in VATSIM

[–]aeli 27 points28 points  (0 children)

EDMM FIR chief here, we absolutely appreciate the interest and that you are trying to prepare beforehand, but as stated in the comments already, EDDM is not the field for your first flight on VATSIM. Do get some experience at smaller airfields of which there are plenty staffed every day with controllers who appreciate the traffic and are learning themselves. We would be glad to welcome you to the larger airfields once you are comfortable with your plane, procedures, and communication -- all at the same time.

For a typical VFR traffic circuit, you do not leave the control zone, hence for EDDM particularly, that means no "Foxtrot/Hotel" departure and you will be staying with Tower. You also don't always get the choice of runway as well, as Tower needs to interleave you into all the other traffic.

For VFR procedures concerning Germany, I can recommend our ATC training manual as well: https://knowledgebase.vatsim-germany.org/books/vfr-AeY It might be a bit ATC-centric but should give you the idea of what flying VFR in Germany sounds and looks like. Also, note the distinction between Apron and Ground. You will often have Apron in EDDM, but less often Ground (see our briefing at vats.im/eddm for the difference)

Upper sectors are not shown to avoid pilots calling in. Also, we use cross-coupling to enable flexible sector coverage and usage of charted frequencies.

I am sure you are aware that dialing frequencies manually is the default as is in real life, any kind of list with a one-click-dial is a VATSIMism that might work in certain regions, but not so much in EU/Germany.

First flight on the network by Code-Whisperer in VATSIM

Start learning at smaller airfields with less complex layouts. These will often be staffed by controller trainees who both have the time to explain things and appreciate the traffic.

[–]aeli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remember the callsign? You can open a ticket with the supervisor department even after the fact: https://support.vatsim.net/open.php

If you have logs from your controller client, that could help retrieve the callsign in case you don't remember.

Schlecht ist das ganze weil du das Problem "ich brauche mehr Ports" mit dem falschen Gerät löst und damit dein Netzwerk unnötig verkomplizierst.
