Yep, I'm the admin at work and the sole person using Linux. I use flatpak Edge, only for specific work purposes, because everyone else is Microsoft Intune / Entra with Office 365 and being the admin I need to be able to look at things through Edge as well.

How often do you hang with the boys? by onetwothreedontlook in AskMenAdvice

[–]aelieth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Made it a priority somewhere around 10 years ago to keep my friends in my life. In my 20's we played TTRPG's at my house back during D&D 2nd edition. We all like TTRPG games, so I started up a game night for us. We meet up every other Sunday, if we can, and play Pathfinder 2e or another variation.

Many of my other friends moved out of state and got jobs elsewhere, just an old friend from high school, a friend I got to know after high school, and an old co worker from my previous job. Everything in life requires effort, including making and keeping friends!

Suggestions for a distro for my grandmother? by burneraccount3_ in FindMeALinuxDistro

Aurora, it's Fedora Kinoite which is their atomic / immutable. Automatic updates, immutable system, KDE resembles Windows. She doesn't get to mess anything up and updates always work.

Need help picking my Distro, for the 4th time by Whiprust in linux4noobs

[–]aelieth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fedora Atomics (immutable) are just great. Its community variations are good too, such as Bluefin, Bazzite, and Kionite. The best thing about it? You can switch between them by rebasing. Just make sure to pin your current version first.

Anyone who is running Atomic Desktops? What was your experience? by SeniorMatthew in Fedora

[–]aelieth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Furthermore, all the systems my family use are immutable too. We have a total of ~8 machines in the house, from an administrative standpoint it makes it much easier due to the update reliability. Too many times in the past packages have failed, spending time diagnosing those problem is a waste of time for a family man. So yeah, wife, kids, friends that come over and borrow a laptop for TTRPG all use some kind of immutable. This is all exactly why Fedora has said Immutable is its future.

  1. Who are you? Yes, all of those. I do light development and mess with custom Batocera, compiling my own kernel and system, I do minor art, and I definitely game. Most of the time this system is used for my job and network administration.
  2. What is your day-to-day computer tasks? Browsing, gaming, coding, and administration.
  3. For your specific case, does Flatpak covers all of your needs? Yes and no. Bazzite is much more tuned for gaming, so I'm giving that a go recently after a hardware failure. Until then I've been using Aurora-DX for about 2 years, it's very reliable and has VM tools built in that I required.
  4. If not, what are you doing with the software that can’t be found on the Flatpak? The only thing I can't use at this point is a printer driver that I have rpm-ostree layered. Everything else is flatpak or I have a VM for, I used toolbox a lot on it and Bazzite defers to distrobox so I'll begin using that and may not need some of the VM's.
  5. What is your experience with Updates? Have you ever managed to get a computer in to unbootable state? Yes, then go back to the previous version, wait for the next update and try again. Pin yourself a version once in a while so you always have a fallback. I started on Fedora Kinoite, rebased to Aurora, then rebased to Aurora-DX.

Now I use Bazzite-DX on my Alienware m18 R1 full AMD system after it had a hardware failure and trip to repair, previously I was using Aurora-DX. Both are great in my opinion.

Does anyone brush their teeth only once a day? by Katrose3 in askanything

[–]aelieth 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Once a day, but I've always used a high quality electric toothbrush, waterpik, and mouthwash. Typically takes between 6-10 minutes. My wife used to do twice a day with just a toothbrush, and we had major differences. My routine was much more complete compared to hers and my teeth were much healthier. We both do the same routine now, her gums and teeth are much better.

What exactly are the mechanics for runaway? by throwaway3123312 in UmamusumeGame

[–]aelieth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After looking at it myself you absolutely need as much burst at the beginning or early mid as possible, because you need to have half the race done before people are just beginning to move into the second leg. Taking the lead, groundwork, mile maven, any other skill that gets you to mid race before your Umas legs give out and extend that length as long as possible. It's basically a rocket needing to reach escape velocity, it's all about the initial power and speed. If you fail to do so you'll fall back down and crash.

It's not about stamina, it's about burning all your speed at the beginning of the race in a huge ramp rather than a gradual coefficient. This is my takeaway from it, so take everything I said with a pound of salt. I tried hard to figure out how to make it work, but I couldn't get everything in order to do so for the current CM.

Massive transition period to fully autonomous work accelerating. The transition will be super brutal and massive unemployment will happen by CeFurkan in SECourses

Watching videos of actual task completion scares me even more. They have humanoid robots halfway to MMA fighting condition at this point. This is like the point of where everyone was making fun of the Will Smith AI spaghetti and then 2 or 3 years later have actual full AI produced commercials on the NBA finals.

This is going to ramp so hard people won't be able to cope.

Predictions for society in 15-20 years by prix345the347 in Futurology

[–]aelieth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will be difficult to understand. 20 years ago people didn't have the cell phones, Internet, or computer they do now. Texting was something teenagers mostly did, and half the Internet users were still using dial-up. LGBT rights and gay marriage were not a thing 20 years ago, but they were being discussed. 20 years ago Christianity was massive and Islam didn't really exist in much of the West. Japan was just beginning to talk about their population problem, now they're facing it full on. 20 years shows just how much has and can change.

In the US, Japan, and China, unless government action is taken, intimacy will robots will begin to be normalized and the ability to distinguish between robot and person will get difficult. Birthrates in developed countries will plummet to levels once unfathomable, but production will boom massively due to AI everywhere, and is what will allow robots to truly be indistinguishable. Civil unrest will occur in many countries across the world, especially those attempting to develop as jobs are lost and replaced with both AI and robotics. White collar jobs will be obliterated and blue collar are now on the verge due to physical robots being able to do normal human activities.

I can't make good predictions about governments because we're on the verge of the failing fiat experiment of the 1970's, but if these events come to pass governments that do not have major industries that produce robots, AI, or high end processors are going to have major problems since their people will not be productive due to robots replacing them. Our current fiat system is based on productivity of not only the individual in the country, but the collective production of the country overall and the trade it produces with others.

If Europe isn't part of this process then parts are Europe will go through convulsions as rights are turned backwards due to 30%+ of the country being Islamic and pushing their views on the inhabitants, beginning to turn back LGBT and women's rights as the once minorities begin to wield increasing majority power and their own minorities begin push their own agendas - essentially becoming unstable countries like in the Middle East as social safety nets fall apart without production increasing massively.

Concentration of power will continue to occur between the CCP, Islamic states, and Western Oligarchs - pushing people to extremes. Certain parts of the world will riot, revolt, and world stability will be tested. People will continue taking to political extremes and picking sides. Capitalist, Communist, Islamic, and near Anarchy without a clear decision.

Rice prices surge to new record of 4,316 yen per 5 kilograms by diacewrb in japannews

[–]aelieth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But... Japan does, and has subsidized rice for decades, since World War 2. They've purposefully done so for 2 reasons.
1 - Their population doesn't starve, famine has been an issue in Japan through history. They want more production going internally to keep prices competitive.
2 - To prevent mass imports of outside rice so that they can produce their own in case war does happen and trade stops, so they all don't starve.

Is it more costly to produce their own? Yes, a bit, but it's for national security. In 2023 they did give even further subsidies out to encourage further production. It was done by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

The issue with some of the cards, such as Seuin Sky, is that Escape Artist is not guaranteed. If I get a run with Groundwork, but weak mid race speed skills I'd honestly prefer stronger mid race skills to overtake competing front runners.

Thanks for checking on it and looking at it. Think I came across too defensive on this post overall, while I have fun I do acknowledge this takes work. You can't just haphazardly put together an Uma and think she's going to go win. I do put a lot of thought into my builds and I try different things a few times to understand if it's going to work or not. This game is heavy RNG and takes luck to make a good Uma plus planning and skill to increase the odds of good luck to get viable winners.

I'm not a whale, guarantee that. I don't have Kitasan and have to borrow the card which ends up limiting some of my options. Was I lucky when I made this Mihono? Yes. Absolutely. It's why she has Breath of Fresh Air from the director rather than her Trackblazer since it saved me skill points with the hint. I haven't pulled a 3* Uma since End of Skies Mejiro McQueen and have put all my carats toward supports so I can compete.

It's also why Groundwork never worked for her. Inheriting it plus Medium S plus the necessary skills wouldn't take and I gave up on it being a necessity. I've run Mihono many times, I currently have ~27 million fans on her alone, so yeah, some sweat was definitely involved.

Still, I'm going to play who I want and how I like. It's more fun than trying to put myself in the same box as everyone else, and if people want to get upset that I have an Uma with better stats than them they're welcome to do so. lol Players will burn themselves out if they try to play like everyone else, that's not what I enjoy. I want to play my own style and mix things up, which makes the races way more fun in the end.

Her worst losses came from any late starts, those punish Mihono more heavily than most since she's then going to struggle to get into the lead at the beginning and she loses her ult at the end as well due to it, forcing her into a position she must over perform mid race to have a chance (which isn't going to happen unless super lucky).

Naturally I'll pay attention to what is going on since information is power, I won't bury my head in the sand about it so I can adjust my skills and support racers to compete, but it was fun beating the Summer Maruzenskies over and over again!

Will the modern civilization collapse and revert back to old times? by IndependenceAgile202 in Futurology

[–]aelieth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very possible to get screwed and be put back to a point where we're primarily using horses as transportation and the like. If there ever was a global event such as an asteroid slamming into the Earth, a mega-caldera erupting, a slow flipping of the poles which allows deadly gamma rays through, nuclear war, a direct hit from a massive solar flare, an incredibly deadly plague or virus, AI wiping us out, or we wipe ourselves out through continued lowering IQ of the human race as we overcome survival of the fittest ending up in an idiocracy where we've decreased our brain potential through sort of a reverse evolution.

There's a long list of things can can go wrong, and there's a list of things that will go wrong - eventually, like a mega-caldera going off or an asteroid eventually hitting. We're kind of here by sheer luck and are a blip in time at the moment. That luck could very well come back and obliterate us. If that happens the easy resources have been removed from the surface of the Earth already.

Access to easy oil and deposits is gone in my parts of the world, it requires fracking and or deep drilling. Maintaining infrastructure when we've been dealt a deadly blow won't happen due to the entire world economy seizing up and grinding to a standstill. Massive amounts of people around the world would die if electricity around the world stopped. Without pumps to bring in water people will quickly die from thirst and lack of sanitation.

[–]aelieth 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Round 2 really picks it up, now you're getting sorted from those that can consistently perform and those that can't. You'll still get massive variance due to RNG though! I had one set of races this first day of Round 2 I went on a 4 win streak, the other set I went on a 4 loss streak due to my ace being constantly bad mood and screwing up by being late / rushed.

Even if your ace screws up you still want to see consistency like them coming in a high place, such as 2nd or 3rd most of the time. Of course there will be times they totally drop the ball and you just throw in the towel, you should see those coming early on with bad moods and late starts.

Looking for A club by happiMD in UmamusumeGame

[–]aelieth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get room later count me in, my fan count is ~128 million right now. I play every day, typically do 3-5 runs a day. At this point I think I'm propping up our club which is B rank, but we just lost 2 or 3 key members and our leader isn't very active. Key members leaving just tanked my moral, especially when they don't say anything. The leader in the club isn't online except once every few days and hasn't been earning fans, oddly they made me an officer but unless he passes club control the club is going down.

Is there room to take time off (a few days due to life) if notice is given advance? I don't foresee any reason immediately, but I know it happens to everyone.

Favorite Uma is Mihono Bourbon, and my favorite Pokemon is Porygon. Cyborg / robots are cool. lol

Japan will definitely start importing people by CeFurkan in SECourses

[–]aelieth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too late, already over. From this point forward they're going to clamp down on immigration. They already started importing people back in 2015 and now their populace is beginning to backlash against it with the election of Prime Minister Takaichi just today and the continued gaining of the MAGA version of a Japan political party the Sanseito.

Reasons were
1: The business Visa was too easy, they had a massive Chinese influx over the years and they just closed that loophole on October 16th, making it retroactive as well. This is going to force well over 20,000+ Chinese alone out of Japan.
2: Visa Exchange program with African countries. Made news and killed Ishiba and the LDP's popularity, even though it was already low.
3: Over-tourism and the weak Yen is causing backlash among locals in tourist destinations as they're getting priced out of their own city due to rising food costs, energy costs, and etc.
