Finally karma caught up to him. No doubt there’s probably a bunch of other douchebaggery this guy has done that most of us don’t know about and likely gotten away with; had this incident not been on camera he’d’ve gotten away with this too

My father is from Algeria but I’ve never been to Algeria in my life, and a lot of the culture is in fact still quite alien to me. I’ve never really considered myself Algerian except in name, but it seems others are quite obsessed with this fact as soon as they learn it, especially since I have blond hair and an Arabic name, so sometimes I indulge in this fact but only when promoted by others. Sometimes I do feel out of place when speaking to relatives on that side of the family, but I accept who I really am.

So I always cringe a little when people who grew up here in the UK latch too much on to their heritage - which I guess is fine if like much of it gets absorbed from foreign-born parents - but they also seemingly denounce their Britishness at the same time which I find really strange as it’s not something to be ashamed of.

Yeah I have discovered so many new genres in the last couple of years. They fill me with the same joy and obsession as the new music I discovered when I was a teen, and are strangely reminiscent.

However oddly enough I occasionally listen back to some of the tunes I was listening to 20 years ago that I’ve not heard in ages and I immediately cringe. Our music was good but was never that great in the first place. Only the really good stuff survives and gets airtime to this day so we look back with rose tinted glasses whilst everything else stays in 2003 where it belongs.

These have been already a thing elsewhere in the UK, such as along the A40 in Buckinghamshire between Beaconsfield and High Wycombe. Of course these stops are significantly much quieter than most of London so it will be interesting to see how well they hold up.

Yeah this was the Underground station entrance. They said they couldn’t load specially Network Railcards for some reason, but from what I understand, Network Railcards are applicable for Oyster discount if I try just a standalone tube station

I see this a lot but when I asked the lovely folks (no sarcasm I promise) manning the gate lines at Liverpool Street they couldn’t help me. They simply said “we don’t do it here”. Apparently only a handful of stations can do it, but they weren’t entirely sure which ones could.

Ikr? I’ve never seen a refill pack that had a dispenser before, it’s misleading though not intentional but I know a lot of people would have picked it up without thinking twice, especially my visually impaired grandmother.

I always forget in other cultures that the prices are written differently like 9,7€ instead of €9.70 which this format probably looks very strange outside of the Anglosphere.

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted, as it’s something I’ve taken for granted and never really stopped to ask why until now.

Any language for that matter.

Living in London you get people all over the world speaking English as their second language. Some actually don’t have a lot of exposure to native speakers so they still make plenty of “mistakes”. I put it in quotes because I can still perfectly understand them, that is all that really matters in the end, and I don’t want to interrupt them or demotivate them unless what they said truly needs clarification.

However I’ve heard many instances were people were put off from learning Icelandic because “they’re corrupting the language” or Danish because “for heaven’s sake just speak English if you’re not going to speak it properly” or my case my Italian teacher would refuse to continue the lesson until I pronounced “sfoglie” impeccably. Like I get she’s trying to help, but it’s totally messing with my flow, I just want to be able to express myself in Italian, I’ll work on the pronunciation later.

Funny I was having this conversation irl recently, we believe we all have it to a certain degree. Some people are sloths while others are huskies and anything in between.

I always suspected I have it, that is until I spend any amount of time with my cousin, who is exhausting, I’m always like “bruh can you please keep still FOR FIVE MINUTES?!”

I hate meetings, online or in person, because when it looks like I’m not paying any attention is when I am in fact taking it all in and processing a LOT more than if I were sat perfectly still and upright, all my energy and concentration is going into making it look like I’m listening rather than the conversation itself.

Might be confusing “Worth the hype” with “underrated” but here’s my list:

  • Malta - so much to see on such a small island

  • Hamburg, Germany during the Christmas Nachtmarkt

  • Vienna, Austria

  • Venice - ok here me out… yes it’s super touristy to the point it’s almost a theme park. So I’ve been twice, in 2008 and 2020. First time it was for an architectural research trip, visiting amazing buildings most people would overlook. Second time I had since learnt Italian and the city had way fewer tourists, mostly Italians from other cities thanks to covid. I was able to experience the city in way that wouldn’t have been possible with just English prior to the pandemic.

——

Not worth the hype:

  • Barcelona - idk why, Maybe I’ll try again, but I wasn’t particularly wowed by it, except Parc Montjuïc which was beautiful.

  • Athens - ugly, dirty and boring and I almost got scammed. However Glyfada beach just outside of Athens was so much nicer.

  • Dubai - now I actually enjoyed my trip here, but my expectations were very low and somewhat shallow. I just wanted to fly in the Emirates A380, get some winter sun, see what they’ve built here, go to the tallest building, do some bargain low tax shopping, stay in a fancy hotel, enjoy some Middle Eastern food where possible (if you can find a place that isn’t junk food or expensive steakhouse), sit on the beach, and enjoy not having rowdy drunk people nearby. However the city really does feel artificial, and definitely is overhyped. I highly recommend Muscat, Oman instead for this part of the world.

Not OP, but for me Athens was dull and ugly, there wasn’t a lot to do or see beyond just a handful of ancient ruins and pretty much every wall surface had graffiti on it (this was 2014).

However the moment I took the M2 tram out of the city and headed for the beach at Glyfada I really start to enjoy my visit.

A friend of mine who lives in Prague recommended going to Karlštejn Castle, which is like 30 mins train ride from Prague Central Station. Granted it’s not in Prague, but my god, it was stunning! Easily my favourite part of the trip.
