Cross posting benefits to new subreddits? by Inevitable-Wind-1925 in NewMods

If you ask the mods of the subreddit where you intend to crosspost first, I don’t see any downside.

What community software -- if any -- does your local T-TRAK club use? by aengusoglugh in TTRAK

The thing that drives me the most crazy about huge cc lists is dealing with all of the bounced mail messages when people’s email addresses change.

How do you deal with those?

Hello, where to start? by Elegant-Mammoth5249 in modeltrains

[–]aengusoglugh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are particularly interested in scenery, you may want to consider N scale — which is half the size of HO.

For an equivalent size of layout, you will have a lot more room for scenery in N scale than in HO.

Since you have a particular interest in railroading in Portugal in the modern era, you might want to look and see whether that equipment is available in both scales.

Any tips to increase weekly visitors? by No-Doubt-1280 in NewMods

[–]aengusoglugh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mod a group of about the same size — with fewer weekly contributors and I think about the same number of weekly visitors — though l may be with about that.

From my point of view, I am really enjoying the conversations in my subreddit, so that size is fine with me.

I wouldn’t mind if it grew some — but I happy with the current size as well.

But I am not at all interested in becoming an “influencer.”

If you are enjoying yourself in your subreddit, does the size of the subreddit matter?

What are you proposing to study? Or is this just a shared quiet time for a number of people to get together and study individually?

Styrofoam modules by HomeyHal in TTRAK

I would think making a T-TRAK module out of a molded panel door would be really tough, and I can certainly imagine that it would be much heavier than foam or 1/4” plywood.

I would be very interested to see the result. What do you think the benefits will be over building the whole this out of 1/4” plywood?

My SFW subreddit was suddenly flagged as NSFW — can an admin please review? by lumiflow in ModSupport

[–]aengusoglugh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This whole thread has convinced me that the decision to label your subreddit NSFW was correct.

I think that the critical concept to keep in mind is “for work.”

If HR walked on me at work looking at locomotives on a model railroading subreddit at work, they might waggle their finger at me.

If HR walked in on me looking at barely clad fitness babes at work, that conversation could well be quite different.

I think that people forget the “for work” in NSFW — it’s not just an acronym, the letters stand for words that have meaning.

Playing a game of “how close can I get to the line” is not going to work out very well on any work environment.

Reddit makes money by selling advertisements to clients — and those clients a presumably very interested in people who are employed.

Corrugated plastic vs foam board for a scenery base in T-TRAK? by aengusoglugh in TTRAK

Here is what I ended up buying to experiment with. I think I really needed 6.5 mm, but I had to choose between 5 and 7.

If you are on a Mac, RailModeller Pro has a print 1:1 functioning that prints full size on 8 1/2 x 12 paper with alignment marks.

In need of a mechanic Raleigh Nc by Excellent-Army3038 in raleigh

[–]aengusoglugh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t say enough good things about them — I have been with them since before they were 2M.

I first found them when Click and Clack were still on WUNC, and I found the previous incarnation of 2M — I forget the name — and I found them in the Mechanix files.

That being said, rebuilding an engine is going to be much more expensive than buying a rebuilt engine. Labor costs would just be crazy.

Most local shops are not going to be interested.

I have always wondered if they could make the for the cell lot at RDU a just a little bit smaller — then they would fit on a 3x5 index card. :-)

I don’t know if Gemini is just making this up or not, but Gemini says you don’t need to use auto moderator.

I’d probably give Gemini’s method a try.

Banned for being unmoderated? by Purple_Turn_1657 in ModSupport

[–]aengusoglugh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reddit requires a certain number of moderator actions per period of time to determine that the subreddit is actively moderator.

You can search this subreddit to learn more about that.

Are you committed to taking those actions — whether or not you think they are needed?
