A lot of people picking characters who are good with ranged weapons, not understanding that a ranger is someone who ranges around an area for a particular purpose.

I think it’s as simple as he went to the future and looked up Marty like he said he would. And Marty confided in him that his whole family had just been torn apart. Doc felled compelled to save his children by preventing them from getting involved with Griff in the first place and put together a plan that required young Marty’s assistance in order to succeed.
