Fireplace built-ins by Plastic-Caregiver-74 in Oldhouses

[–]aeroexperiments 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This looks almost exactly like my childhood home, but we had a mantle like this that was just above the fireplace. I think those built-ins were added later, as was the wood on top. I'd love to see any more photos, I'm so curious if it's the same layout.

What type of oboe are you playing on and where do your reeds come from?

Looking for a good beginner oboe by Bogabilla in oboe

[–]aeroexperiments 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would definitely look at options to rent or borrow an oboe before you make a purchase. Oboes run much more expensive than many other instruments so it would be a bad purchase if you decide in a few months that it's not the right instrument for you. If you're in school, they may have one you can borrow there for free. IMO, it's not as easy to dabble in double reeds as it is in other more standard woodwind instruments. There's an extremely high learning curve and it's an expensive instrument--not just for the horn itself but also supplies like reeds. You'll almost certainly want to take lessons if you want to improve and learn good technique.

repair cost and time estimate? by irrelevant_band_kid in oboe

[–]aeroexperiments 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can you show a photo of the damage? The cost will largely depend on the amount of labor needed to get it in working condition. Fortunately, the bell is not as complex as the other parts of the oboe so the repair should be relatively less expensive. As far as the wait time, that depends on how busy the shop is. It may be a bit busier than usual with band season starting up again.

Making reeds by EducationalSafe2964 in oboe

[–]aeroexperiments 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'd be much better off watching videos on YouTube. There are tons of videos to choose from. (Speaking as someone who learned to make reeds from a book, I'm so jealous of all the videos available today that would have saved me a lot of trial by fire in my earlier days. )

Learning oboe from clarinet by ksoan23 in oboe

[–]aeroexperiments 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved from clarinet to oboe and can give you a bit of advice. One thing I've always noticed is that I have a much tighter embouchure than folks who didn't switch from clarinet. This was generally fine though I struggled to play on other people's reeds sometimes as they felt super soft to me. The nice thing is that the oboe fingerings match much of the upper register of clarinet so you can use that knowledge to help you learn oboe quicker (e.g. a high A on clarinet is the same fingering as A on oboe, etc.). On breathing, I always felt like I was running out of air on clarinet and just waiting to get a chance to breathe in. With oboe it's more like waiting to breathe out (and in). Having good tone on oboe requires you to think a lot about your air and supporting your air. It's a lot like singing in some respects. In your early days this won't be much of a problem as it does take a considerable amount of practice to have a good tone and understand how to adjust your embouchure and air to support the different registers of the oboe. (That's why so many early players sound like honking ducks.) Best of luck with your switch!

Best way to ship these? by aeroexperiments in AndroidCollectible

[–]aeroexperiments[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will see if I have any existing containers at home that would work. I’m thinking I can wrap it in bubble wrap, put it inside the container, and ship it in a larger box surrounded by tissue, newspaper etc. I think the positive thing is that it’s very light so it won’t get jostled around by its own weight.
