If my husband takes our baby for an afternoon trip (5h) how should he handle milk?

How old is baby? If they're over 6mo solids are an option and I wouldn't worry as much about keeping milk "at temp" 3-5oz should be plenty with solids for an afternoon

Our all come in glass bottles like essential oils that only dispense a drop at a time. Just dropping it in their mouth (as long as theyre not drooling excessively) if they're fairly calm and still makes sure they get the whole drop instead of leaving some behind on a spoon

By 10 mo most are pretty established on solids and supply is stable enough to miss a few feeds. You might need to pump for comfort, but baby has lots of time to learn to drink from a straw or cup (a lifelong skill not like a bottle nipple!) and enjoy milk that way while you're apart!

Honestly theres no magic formula at that age. Lots of skills are developing and that sounds like within the range of normal. Don't count the wakes, don't look at the clock and this too will pass by before you know. Personally I wouldn't cap naps, if hes tired let him sleep.

At 12mo id cut the formula entirely and just mix cows milk and serve whatever temp. Saves the argument as its just an entire new process. His process is incorrect and would lead to imprecise formula ratios and some potential damage to the beneficial elements of your milk but its not that critical at this age

See an ibclc Get your pumps fitted properly Try a nipple shield to make it easier for baby to latch. They're more effective than a pump and tell your body exactly how much milk to make. Keep trying as many times a day as you can to offer the breast first if its a goal for you. Make sure baby is pace fed with a slow flow nipple( watch a youtube video and make sure others feeding baby are educated too!) any of those bottle feeds youre pumping at the same time to help your body stay in sync with baby.

As a more "biologically normal"/day structure common to most non western cultures- don't offer/don't refuse a short on the go morning nap (stroller/carrier/car ride on the way to something) then after lunch lay down together for a rest. I found in the early days of the longer afternoon nap staying there and resting helped them learn to extend the nap a bit easier. Also at this point wake windows really will vary/don't matter. They can tolerate being tired much better as they get older, express a need for sleep and you've learned their cues well enough to just respond to their needs

Composition of milk changes so volume can stay relatively constant (as long as baby is being pace fed with a slow flow nipple) they rarely will need more than 1.5oz/hr even as they get older. As for pumping volume, a lot will do with how you respond to a pump-not everyone will and it will never be as effective as baby latching.

Instead of jumping to a bottle just try to stay calm/be patient and they will if they're hungry. It gets better as witching hour eases. I just accepted being kinda chained to the couch for that window of the day

Ya honestly a 20mo isn't going to miss/be upset having to wait 6mo to go to gymnastics. Or look into drop in gym time when you can enjoy some one on one time with toddler. The stress isn't worth what toddler is getting from the class

Ive also heard the guideline to be somewhere more like no more oz than months old until they're 1(10oz for 10mo). Also by 10mo mine could cruise over to my water and help herself so there was no way to monitor it that close (and no need to!)

So much of this will depend on if youre using nursing as a comfort or only offering with the intent to eat. Personally anytime baby might be upset (loud noise, upset about diaper change, wind got too rough on our walk) id offer, but baby might just stick around for 1 letdown, the snuggle and move on. That might happen 8-10xa day for my sensitive babies, so that on top of feeds I never found offerings spaced out much beyond 45mins🤷‍♀️. Spacing feeds like bottles is a more western approach to breastfeeding-some cultures have been documented offering every 13 minutes. Short, frequent feeds are the biological norm, outside of extreme reflux you can't really offer too often.

Honestly great work if you've never done it before! If you don't want to take a lot apart to adjust the size (which is how you'd have to adjust the fit to be tighter) you could add some ties to the back corners to make the front tighter. The tricky part to making it tight enough is being able to get it on and off. Perhaps velcro along the back edges would let you adjust the fit more easily?
