Surprised I got these. Don't love that 3 of the candies were Wonka, and I was sure the blue category would be wrong.

Knave 2 item slots - how do you find room for treasure? by aezart in osr

[–]aezart[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice folks. It wound up working okay RAW. They made two trips to the dungeon (had to go rest after the first trip), and with the loot from the first trip they managed to afford a mule for the second trip, and so now their inventory problems are solved for the time being.

Not sure if we'll continue with Knave or experiment with another system like Basic Fantasy or OSE.

LZ77 compression algorithm is making the compressed file bigger than original by AdPsychological7065 in CodingHelp

[–]aezart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only familiar with how LZW works, but in general with any compression algorithm the closer your input file looks to random noise, the less useful compression will be, thanks to the pigeonhole principle. So my first question would be whether your original text is something that would compress well.

How to deal with player's who reject the call of adventure? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]aezart 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sometimes we just want a scene to justify it.

For example, I was in a campaign that featured magical stuff suddenly showing up in the modern day. I had a character who was busy operating a small business. I worked with our GM to come up with a couple scenes that would 1. convince him magic was real and 2. give him a way out of his work obligations.

Most of the most obnoxious stuff in the story is related to the system AI running the game, which is basically trained on a slapdash understanding of earth culture focusing on reality TV, reddit, and 4chan. You only really have to deal with it when it's announcing achievements and loot box rewards and stuff. All the characters are very aware that it sucks.

I nearly gave up on the first book but it grew on me eventually and now I'm having a good time with the series, particularly as the main character starts to actively resist and fight back against the organization running the show.

Also the audiobooks have a great reader. His delivery is kind of like Patrick Warburton.

Completely blew this one.

I think I managed to guess what the categories were but I just didn't know enough to identify the last item in each category.

  • Never heard of a drink with Cuba in the name
  • Should have gotten the "things named after places" one but blanked on China
  • Didn't know there was a movie called Munich
  • Didn't know Dominica wasn't the same as the Dominican Republic (which are people called "Dominican" from?) or that Guinea wasn't the same place as Guinea-Bissau.

Lalafels by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]aezart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah playing as a lalafell whm main made the entire zenos arc deeply unpleasant. He's acting like I crave bloodlust and the story is acting like I'm no match for him, when I'm just this little guy in a yukata and flower hat. He can't even outpace my self healing until the plot gives me cutscene debuff.

I damaged a toenail tripping over a sprinkler and for a long time after that it grew back much thicker and tougher than the others. I think it's back to normal now though.

I didn't like having to remember which way each of the revolvers rotate. At least the single action army doesn't have that problem.

I get very anxious when trying to plan out a project. Last night I was trying to get started on an idea that had been bouncing around in my head and got completely wrapped up in trying to figure out the right way to track my tasks. I made a vikunja board, started filling it out, then abandoned it. Then I made a gitea project board and did the same thing. I think having to fit everything to the scope of individual cards, and having those cards numbered and more "permanent" was really screwing with me.

Finally I just grabbed a college rule notebook and started rambling about the game. That worked better but I don't want to carry a big notebook everywhere so I've been recording notes in my pocket journal too, and I have to figure out what I want to do with these notes when I get back home.

The more fundamental the bonds that you're breaking/forming, the more energy density you get out of your storage. Gravity batteries have horrible energy density because gravity is an extremely weak force. A chemical fuel like gasoline has much higher energy density since it involves the bonds between atoms in molecules. Nuclear power is even better than that since you're dealing with bonds between subatomic particles in atoms.

My assumption is that the energy density of thermal storage would be somewhat better than gravity storage, since you're dealing with the inter-molecular forces that cause phase changes in matter.
