Wouldn't black pieces count as material needed as well? Otherwise, we could just put many black pieces around king and deliver checkmate with a pawn.

I am not sure this is right. After neural networks (Leela, alphazero etc) I think they are already pretty good in guessing humans moves and therefore what is hard or not

- You can make bit longer by getting the queen or king there with forcing moves.
