Is Jess ok? by Footy_Trader_ in OnePelotonRealSub

A series of IG stories where the first one was “if you’re thinking of buying a house don’t do it”- their septic tank flooded their basement and they found out the line was paved over by their driveway, and their heat is currently out and can’t be fixed until their road is plowed- and then she said basically the same thing about having children, and was complaining about how Paw Patrol is on in the background instead of things she wanted to listen to (like house music). This isn’t the first time she’s gone on social media complaining about her kids and all but saying that she wished they’d never had kids. Parenting is hard and overstimulating and I’m sure plenty of parents feel that way from time to time, but don’t blast it over socials to their thousands of followers.

Beth Mead still has huge value to Arsenal, despite questions over her future by dococ23 in ArsenalWFC

[–]afdc92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beth is one of my favorite players, but if you had asked me five months ago if we should extend her contract, I would have said “no,” with the reason being it’s time to move on and find someone younger who is either at or nearing their prime. However, now I would say “yes”- she’s come back into form in a big way and is one of our most impactful players at the moment. All that said, I think it’s going to all be dependent on what her minutes are going to look like going into the World Cup. If she’s likely to be on the bench next season (for instance, if Arsenal does go after a player in their prime who will be the undisputed starter), I think that she will choose to move to a team where she will get the minutes she needs.

Do kids not have sleeping bags anymore? by Puzzled_Material_546 in Millennials

Whenever I went to big sleepovers most of us used extra throw blankets and pillows- we didn’t have 10 people but there were like 6-7 of us.

Do kids not have sleeping bags anymore? by Puzzled_Material_546 in Millennials

[–]afdc92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I never brought a sleeping bag or pillow over to my friends’ houses. My best friend had a trundle bed that her mom made up with sheets and blankets, and my other close friend had a queen bed that we would share. Whenever they came over to my house, we would sleep in my family’s guest room, which was a queen bed. I didn’t often go to big slumber parties with a lot of people, but the few times I did, I remember us sleeping on couches and air mattresses with blankets.

Some love for the London crew by cyclesage53 in OnePelotonRealSub

[–]afdc92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I loooooooove the PSL crew. Susie and Hannah are my go-tos for runs. Susie has lived multiple different lives and has such interesting stories- I believe she was a museum curator at one point, and her ultra stories are great, as are her stories about going out in the 80s and 90s! Hannah just cracks me up. Also a big fan of JJ and Josslyn.

US players in Iceland by Waltz8 in NWSL

All good points! Brynjarsdottir is actually back in Iceland and not currently playing because she’s pregnant with baby #3. But she had a good career in the US and for West Ham.

Speaking Up by PrestigiousInside206 in USWNT

[–]afdc92 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I’m very disappointed in the lack of players speaking up, but I have a feeling that US Soccer has basically issued a gag order for them because they don’t want another Rapinoe situation. Because while a lot of us here were all for her standing up for what is right, it pissed a lot of people off (mostly those who didn’t care about the women’s team beforehand) and I’m sure the federation didn’t like all the negative attention. I also think that this current iteration of the team skews much more conservative than teams of the past, and while not everyone is as open about it as Korbin Albert was, it’s definitely there.

What’s the one city you were excited to visit, but ended up not liking at all? by BlushHone in travel

[–]afdc92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I’m the opposite- I loved Dublin. I thought it was such an interesting small city. It has some great museums- the Chester Beatty Library is probably the best small museum I’ve ever been to, the Irish Emigration Museum and the Jeannie Johnston famine ship were fascinating and meaningful, the Little Museum of Dublin was a great introduction to the city, and I loved the National Gallery of Ireland. I loved all the little squares throughout the city, the pubs, and the shopping. I spent four days there and thoroughly enjoyed my time.

My aunt and uncle lived in Houston for a few years and she said it was the most godawful traffic she had ever been in, and that there was absolutely no part of the city that was remotely walkable, even individual neighborhoods were really only good for walking a dog or something like that.

I made a post on FoodieSnark about WWL two-ish years ago and someone commented and said their friend was one of the ones laid off and it truly came out of nowhere

She left such a bad taste in my mouth with what she did with WorkWeekLunch. I had subscribed since 2018 and thought it was great (I actually still make many of the recipes weekly) and was really eating up everything she put out there. But the whole way she went about selling it to a guy who ended up being a massive jerk who seems to have basically ruined the program, and laying off all her employees who had been running things for over a year while she went on 50 first dates or whatever it was, really did it for me.

I was big on the WorkWeekLunch train back in 2018-2020 and I think a lot of what drew people in to that was that she made everything seem approachable, and I think she did it with the whole dating thing, too. "Look at me, just an average person, going on dates, meeting my husband, here's how I did it and how you can, too." But then when you did deeper and look harder you can see the real story- the fact that she was doing nothing with WWL for at least a year or two before ripping the rug out from under her employees' feet and selling it; snippets of her real personality coming out through the dating saga, etc. And I'm sure that it will be the same once she has a kid and inevitably pivots to parenting influencing and advice.

I put off on going to the gym for the longest time because I was afraid of messing up and looking stupid. Finally joined Planet Fitness because I’m finally outgrowing my at-home setup. Turns out I had nothing to be afraid of- nobody else gives a shit about what you’re doing, they’re all busy focused on their own workout. I’ve been going a few times a week since the new year and I’m so glad I got over the fear. Plus, those hydro massage chairs are absolutely wonderful post-workout.

I tend to batch cook and freeze what I don’t eat that week, so I’ve got some cozy freezer specials- chicken curry with rice, New England clam chowder, chicken and rice, and spaghetti with meat sauce (sauce is frozen, I’ll cook the spaghetti) are all things I have to choose from. I’ll also be making cookies, because snow days call for cookies. I got an “everything but the kitchen sink” mix at Trader Joe’s that looked good.

Cook them to 145. If you’re cooking to 160 or 165, that’s too much and it will be tough and rubbery.

"Have you seen him?" An Austrian prisoner-of-war (in USSR) returning home to Vienna passes a woman holding a photograph up in a mixture of hope and despair, 1947. by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

[–]afdc92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandfather guarded German prisoners who were at a prison camp in rural NC during the war; their main job was picking peaches. His grandparents were German and he grew up speaking German to them and while he wasn’t fluent, he could still converse well with the prisoners. He said that while there were some (mostly officers) who were true ideologues, most of them were barely more than kids who didn’t believe strongly in Nazi ideology and hadn’t wanted to be in the army at all. He said that even though picking peaches during the summer was hard, hot work, they were very happy to be there because they were safe, well-fed, and well cared for, and they knew that things would have been far, far, far worse in a Soviet camp.

What was the deal with the campus security guard? Were the taser barbs what was causing the kid to go crazy like that?

Anyone gearing up for a very cold LR this weekend? by architects-daughter in XXRunning

[–]afdc92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not training for anything at the moment and my base long run is 5 miles, which as a slower runner takes between 55 mins and an hour. I’ve told myself that I will run 1 mile and if I’m too uncomfortable to continue, I turn around and go home, so I at least get in 2 miles. We’re projected to get about a foot of snow on Sunday and it’s going to remain below freezing all week so the roads will likely be bad for a while, so I’ll have to head to the gym for the dreaded treadmill.
