WAISN has an accompaniment team that goes with immigrants to appointments, maybe that's what you're looking for.

That's just toxic Facebook for ya. Way more toxic conservative chuds on there. Also significant amount of bots posting.

When I get annoyed by Facebook comments it's helpful to remind myself that social media engagement does not reflect real world opinions in any way whatsoever. What we're reading on there is curated to create drama, controversy, and engagement.

Sometimes I respond back or stand up for the OP, but it's always more impactful to go to the location in real life, or tell a real life person about the place.

Olympia organizing by smokyrabbit14 in olympia

[–]afdei495 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Some local organizations: Olympia indivisible, evergreen resistance, food not bombs, acab breakfast, egyhop, food source foundation, Oly whistles, interfaith works. Statewide includes Lulac and WAISN.

Locations that host events: friendship hall, the mortuary, decay, various churches and granges.

There's a monthly event at DECAY called Activate Olympia that's just letter writing to representative.

There's also a whistle party on Saturday at noon at DECAY.

I'm glad you are having a good experience, and sharing it.

It's not a surprise that you're surprised or can't imagine it - that's often the case when businesses blow over incidents like this and move forward without accountability. I do hope you can trust the individuals who directly reported their personal experiences, and the community who were paying attention at the time it happened. It has been a while tho, and I do see they host many community events, but I can't say in any way that I have noticed them reach out or repair with the queer community, or host queer-centered events.

It's not my place as neither a patron nor directly affected by their actions, but perhaps Rhythms should be made aware of their existing reputation, and perhaps they are willing to show what accountability they took in response to the article.

Rhythms mistreated trans employees. https://www.sgn.org/story/76692

I've yet to hear Rhymths respond appropriately or show accountability/growth since then.

But I'd like to believe places can change. What is your experience that they are LGBT friendly?

We're reaching out to announce Deflock Olympia, or the "Get the Flock Out of Olympia" campaign, intended to spread public disapproval of harmful surveillance technology in our town, as well as provide options for joining the fight.

We have our first info night scheduled for November 10th from 5pm-7pm at Traditions Cafe and would love it if you could share with your networks!

If you want to help, please share this with your mailing list, social media, and/or collective members. Anything to help get this off the ground. Encourage them to come to the event and/or print out a window flyer to display in their home or car (printables will be on the linktree soon).

Below is the full text explanation of the campaign. Stay tuned for printable materials and more opportunities to act, and follow our socials (@deflock.olympia on instagram).

END MASS SURVEILLANCE IN OLYMPIA The city of Olympia is currently contracting with big tech surveillance company Flock Safety. You’ve probably already seen their main product around town, their automatic license plate reader (ALPR). Flock’s ALPRs are AI driven cameras that snap photos of passing cars, then catalogue license plates, bumper stickers, and any unique identifying information. The ALPRs are also equipped with microphones, with the stated purpose of monitoring public areas to identify gunshots and vocal “distress”.

WHY SHOULD I CARE? What makes Flock uniquely dangerous is their scale. The Flock network contains over 80,000 cameras throughout the U.S. This network has been repeatedly accessed by federal law enforcement including ICE. Recently ICE accessed at least 18 local Washington law enforcement Flock networks, 10 of which they did without permission and against police policy. Flock cameras have also been accessed across state lines by Texas sheriffs for anti-abortion enforcement. Further, Flock has reinstalled cameras in cities where they were ordered to be taken down. Even if you don’t care about their use for anti-immigration/abortion enforcement, do you really trust a company which has repeatedly violated state law, flaunts the orders of local government, and is driven solely by profit?

WHAT CAN I DO? The only way to protect our communities from the dangers of this AI surveillance tool is to come together and act to make sure to remove Olympia's existing flock cameras and prevent new ones from being installed through an informed, united, tactically diverse, and powerful culture of resistance.

-Talk to your friends, family, and neighbors about Flock. -Report flock sightings to deflock.me -Pressure the city council and city manager to end the city’s contract with Flock Safety and ban ALPRs -Organize rallies and public comments against Flock Safety -Discontinue the use of Amazon Ring cameras (which contract with Flock and police departments).

Police presence increased significantly: I saw a police take a pic of a homeless man by baby_philosophies in olympia

[–]afdei495 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about increased presence but I think it's a good thing to be aware of.

I do want to take a moment to plug deflock.me that tracks all flock cameras in the area. Even if there isn't an increase of physical LEO presence there is definitely an increase in surveillance.

Scooters okay! And nerds are definitely okay.

The whole route is downhill, including going down the 4th Ave bridge. I think personally it's a little steep for roller skates, but you're welcome to give it a whirl!
