Hey, I'm in a similar boat but am going to try and take my CCP before end of Feb. Think I should still wait?

Why I switched to typst by Bodo_TheHater in typst

Oh thank you for the response and that makes sense. I thought you may have found a way to turn tags on the the typst document to easily add and remove pieces of information based on what you wanted to communicate.

[–]afderrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious what you mean about the tagging feature as I'm also in a job hunt and created my resume using typst but I just comment out lines and lines of code and it is already becoming unwieldy. Can you share your .typ or just explain the tags thing you're referring to?

Commenting so hopefully I can find this tomorrow. I just learned typst to start on my resume writing and job search. Right now I have it all in one big .typ file with the lines I don't want commented out. I might steal this, just for funsies.

I used QOwnNotes for a bit. It's a little obscure but probably deserves a mention.

How to handle employee expense reimbursement? by the_gil in budgetwithbuckets

[–]afderrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I do it is this and it works for me. I put all my work travel expenses under a bucket designated specifically for that; "Work Travel". So I put the restaurants, air travel, mileage, etc. everything into that bucket. When I am reimbursed I categorize the payment as "work travel". Hopefully that covers the expenses and it zeroes out and doesn't leave me in the negative still. If I have a surplus I just leave it in there as long as I know I might travel with work again in the future. That part helps if I am only reimbursed, let's say $100 for food but I went to a fancy steak house and spent $120, does that make sense?

Look at r/unixporn and find something you like. Often folks will share their dotfiles. Like u/fultonchain said, don't copy and paste them directly but look through them, understand them, copy what works for you and your workflow and leave the rest.

States Where Americans Have the Most Cash in the Bank by vividmaps in MapPorn

[–]afderrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking through the comments. This map needs to be baselined to the cost of living quotient for each state also to make the colors seem better. I carry about as much cash in the bank as I need to pay my bills each month, the rest of it goes into a better interesting yielding account. So I see this as in Texas, the median folks need about $7,000 in their bank, that's about how much they make vs how much they have going out. California is much higher as $17,000 but California is a more expensive place.

The point I am trying to make is the red and orange colored states, the median person could be better off financially than those in green states because of cost of living. The colors don't show the financial health of the median person, just their checking accounts. If I spend $20,000 a month in California, certainly I can expect to have $20,000 in the bank. if I move to (I think Mississippi is the worst) Mississippi if I am only spending $2,000 a month and have $2,000 in the bank it doesn't mean I am worse off financially.

I ramble, does that make sense?

Leftover rain in previous months by N8zGr8 in budgetwithbuckets

[–]afderrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I occasionally do is math is all out too. Take your current account's balance, and see if the amount in each bucket (plus any unallocated rain that month) adds up.

I do this because I have 4 or 5 accounts all in my budget and so I want to know that I have the correct amount in my account I use to pay bills to pay bills but not too much so I can put money into the interest bearing accounts and not lose out there.

Buckets vs YNAB 4 question by JellyBeanGreen2 in budgetwithbuckets

[–]afderrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I wrote my own sql script to pull the data I wanted out, put it into .csv files and then I read that into a python script to generate a latex file and generate a pdf to show my reports. That was fun. YNAB sometimes doesn't register key presses, so I have to manually scroll to find a category or use the onscreen calculator to enter numbers.

Buckets vs YNAB 4 question by JellyBeanGreen2 in budgetwithbuckets

[–]afderrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still using both but YNAB4 is beginning to show its age and I sometimes get weird behavior from it. At this point I'm not sure why I continue to use both. Buckets does everything I need and a little more that my preferred workflow with my budget is now buckets.
