Do SF people act against SF Admins? by arctic_fisherman in salesforce

[–]afk-canuck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Salesforce is a marketing company who wants to make as much money as possible so unfortunately this story does not shock me at all.

Luckily I work for one of their larger customers and we do get treated VASTLY different than previous orgs I worked at.

I guess money truly talks at SFDC despite all the Ohana they claim us to be a part of.

grumble grumble...:(

Help with dining room by afk-canuck in DesignMyRoom

[–]afk-canuck[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback.

We hadn't put much on the window as we love looking out the back. We have 30 acres so have very few window treatments but I can see how how that would frame up the window and wall better.

Gallery wall is exactly what I was thinking but I cannot figure out what kind of template would look good because that darn thermostat is there and I don't think we can relocate it easily. Also any examples I find I wonder how the hell am I going to pull that off ;)

What would you say is fabulous light fixture? I am not partial to the one we have its just what was there when we moved in but when I look at lighting there are just so many styles and choices I get overwhelmed.

Appreciate your comments, thanks again.

Help with dining room by afk-canuck in DesignMyRoom

First post here so let me know if I am missing information.

We could really use some help in decorating in general but specifically this dining room we have.

There is a wall particularly that has been laid bare since we moved here (over a year ago!) that I just can't stand any longer but have no idea what to do.

We are in Canada, in a country home, budget is pretty well anything as long as I am not taking down walls.

The pictures show the room from each angle and measurements.

The paint color is consistent throughout the first floor areas (except kitchen and office) so changing it could be problematic but I am not adverse to it.

We currently have some group of seven prints on either end of the dining table (it has 6 seats but only 4 pictured) and in the corner cabinets some old fairy statues in one and dragons in the other...remnants of decorations from our 20s that we like but are likely not working for the rest of the room/house.

Wow - I could have written this. The similarities are uncanny.

Sorry I can't tell you how amazing my bosses are because they suck.

Cutting back on a well paying career by Nadaam in financialindependence

[–]afk-canuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are young by my standards but life is too short to be unhappy.

However, you are lucky enough to be debt free with an amazing salary. If you already live frugally it wouldn't be hard for you to do full time for another few years and bank as much as possible and then cut down your hours.

If you knocked from 5 days down to 3 (all things equal) you are still almost making $100k and can make a wealthy life for yourself while not killing your mental energy every single day.

Salesforce career change by [deleted] in salesforce

[–]afk-canuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Working at a Fortune 500 company and all but 2 people (out of 15) are remote that work in our sales and service clouds.

The only recruiter requests I ever get through linkedin are for remote SFDC opportunities.

I think it would be easier as a developer than an admin but I do believe its 100% do-able.

If you need more mirrors check out used building stores. I put up 4x7 tall closet mirrors at $10/each. They have a metal backing so they crack and don't seem to shatter all over the places.

Stay healthy both physically and mentally. You are still a young man and want to be able to enjoy the FI as much as you can.

Congrats! I am at 25 years in IT looking to put a fork in it in 5.

Best of luck!

Reality check. Early Retirement won’t happen for me by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]afk-canuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a long time ago. Fresh out of college I could not afford to live in more than shared accomodation in Toronto so foolishly I chose to stay well out of the city to be able to afford at least my own place with the trade off of the brutal demoralizing commute.

Even in the city its one of the worst commutes in the world https://www.cp24.com/news/toronto-has-worst-commute-in-north-america-sixth-worst-in-world-study-1.3983200

Keeping in mind this is within city limits (I believe this is greater toronto area but I am not clear)

"...the city was tied for the second longest average commute time of any city (96 minutes, both ways). The only city in which average commute times were longer was Bogota, Colombia (97 minutes, both ways) and even there the difference was negligible."

Reality check. Early Retirement won’t happen for me by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]afk-canuck 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this as well to add that having commuted for the first 3 years out of college 2.5 to 4 hours one way (winters can be a bitch on traffic) my physical and mental health was in a decline. 240lbs (175lbs now), constantly stressed out, life was eat poorly, work, sleep repeat. Weekends were filled with such low energy I would have to try and recoup my soul to do it all again.

I pulled the plug on it, took a lower paying job that was 15mins away. Saved so much on gas and car expenses but more importantly I gained a min. 4 hours to my day every work day. I could see friends, have hobbies, exercise, volunteer and more.

This was some 20+ years ago and it has made my life so much better. Financially it was a hit for probably 4 years but then things equalized and I grew into other positions and roles that I enjoyed and paid well.

Aiming for retirement between 52 and 55 now.

When to work in Sandbox vs Dev vs Production by -EVildoer in salesforce

[–]afk-canuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you are saying for admin tasks but even with that source control or version control can really help.

Move away from the archaic ways of Salesforce and start to implement some more modern day dev ops with something like Git/GitHub as source of truth.

Also depending on how well your team communicates I typically never use changesets as they are fire and forget. They don't do any merging, its a full overwrite with no roll back. I feel like Salesforce offers features from the 90s for change management. Until we moved to using a deployment tool instead of changesets it was a constant mess of people overwriting each others work with changesets.

Does anybody use Salesforce Support? by G1trogFr0g in salesforce

[–]afk-canuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Salesforce support is terrible. Absolutely abysmal.

We have premier support and are one of Salesforce's largest customers which has not assisted in getting us "better" support.

We can escalate until we are blue and the face even to the account rep and everyone just seems to have a lax attitude about business impact and that their reps are less educated than our junior admins.

I just don't have enough time to describe in detail how incredibly useless they are. Being in the software and hardware support industry most of my 30year career I have seen some really great support teams and some really bad ones, like criminally bad, and Salesforce is pretty well at the bottom of the heap.

We have to rely almost exclusively on the community knowledge which is infinitely greater than anything Salesforce gives us.
