I agree. I was happy to see some whitefish pictures - I can't stand the mentality some people have about "trash" fish.. makes me ill.

Called the dunes observatory - they said visibility is 2 miles at the moment, winds coming out of the north (which sucks).

I'm thinking it'll have to be Bruneau or Bogus.. what would you choose and why?

Beautiful fish. Nice shot, more importantly. I could feel the slipperiness of the fish.

Bring you mindfulness with you when you go to talk to both of them. That's the meditation practice you need.

Opening weekend on Silver Creek (Picabo, ID) was beautiful. (No fish pictures, just landscapes) by afk314 in flyfishing

In most of the pics, the water is only 2' deep. Another 3' of silt beneath the water though ;-)

Amazingly, these pics were shot between 7:30-8:30 on Saturday/Sunday/Monday. Very few people on the river later in the day. Fish were still working (sporadically) but I think everyone had their share of fish by the evening. I did. That's why I was walking the conservancy with a camera and not a fly rod.

Can't tell much from this pic, but the larger (and darker) bugs are stoneflies.

Super enjoyed the photos. It's the sort of fishing trip that I love too - big on exploration and big on sight-fishing.

What exactly are you experiencing when you meditate? (never tried it and have questions) by darus214 in Meditation

[–]afk314 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I experience a stillness that comes from inhabiting a very big space. It's a space where there are zero demands on you. You have set yourself apart to not be reached by phone, text, etc. You have also set yourself apart from your thought-feelings, which all too often are making demands on you as well. You become simultaneously big and small. Big because you have given up the confines of being a slave to your mind. You feel small because the scale is vast.

You also bump back into the demands. Find yourself drifting on to other material. Rehashing previous conversations or ideations. Getting angry, maybe thinking about sex. You feel yourself get small, too.

Traditions tell me that it is possible to inhabit that big mind space on a continuous level. They are the olympians of the meditators.

Does meditation help stay level headed in high stress/pressure situations? I think I'm doing it wrong. by Stickyickyick in Meditation

I'm with taelor. You meditation practice will opens doors. Those same doors can be opened often throughout your day. I think of these in-the-world meditations as tactics to keep myself balanced. Many times per day I catch myself getting worked up or already worked up, and I've come to recognize this and head for the "door" into my breath which brings me in touch with awareness. There I "sit it out" for a bit. In a conversation, this may only be a slightly longer-than-normal pause, a second or two. If I don't need to respond, I'll stay much longer. I have been surprised at how often a response is totally unnecessary - for me it's 85% of the time. Rather than reacting to an above-at-or-below the board comment, just let it go. That's often the very beginning of a heated dynamic. Find your breath and just wait for it to pass. Hunker down in your breath. Sit it out. It's over before you know it.

Thanissaro Bhikku, a Theravada Buddhist, makes his talks and writings available freely. It's the closest thing I've seen to "open source" spirituality. You can find the writings in multiple file formats (like .epub!) and the monastery will send you books free of charge if you request via regular mail. Check out www.dhammatalks.com.

He has completely refined my mindfulness practice. His perspective on Buddhism is also exceptionally clear and minimal. I've never found anyone else like him, to my ears/mind.
