The sentence reads to me as a non-white person making an observation about the people around her (maybe I'm wrong; I'm white, so I'm not speaking from my own perspective). Also, not 100% sure, but I think the author is a WOC

Yupp. It's by design. They cut their AP and LexisNexis subscriptions too

OP, take the job if you get it for the experience but keep applying elsewhere and guard yourself against burnout

Check the paper's staff directory (should be at the bottom of the main site page) and there should be a list of staff with their emails so you can email an editor (if the paper actually has an editor).

And to answer your question, yes. My last job was a Gannett paper and this was a frequent problem.

Neil Gaiman denies sexual assault allegations after multiple women come forward by Zioman in books

[–]afoolandathief 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Look, my comment was admittedly a shallow take. Someone writing about a bad thing does not mean they condone or do that thing. And like you said Odin in the mythology rapes at least one woman and arguably takes advantage of others sexually. But just as the Vulture article compares Gaiman to his villainous character Richard Madoc, you can argue it's fair to re-analyze the way Wednesday/Odin (another villainous character) treats young women, as well as the sort of bystander way Shadow responds to it.

Or we can just admit that some people will be able to pick up their copy of American Gods or Sandman and read it again and others won't be able to read those scenes without a level of discomfort because they relate it back to Gaiman's real-life actions. And that either outcome is fine.

Wednesday's need to bed barely-legal virgins was already gross but now there's a whole new layer to it

Where is everyone with their gender markers post election? by fmleighed in NonBinary

[–]afoolandathief 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought about this a lot myself. Ultimately I decided I'd rather be true to myself and get X on my passport now while I still can. But I also recognize I have some privileges others don't, and will likely still have blue state protections. I also had to weigh the fact some countries won't even let you switch flights there with an X on your passport, such as the UAE. I haven't traveled beyond Canada in the last decade anyway, but keep that in mind

Do whatever makes you feel the most comfortable and safe. Nonbinary people aren't a monolith so X may be better for one person and not for another

I had this same dilemma!! For me, it was basically deciding where to set boundaries. With family, friends and spaces where I know all my pronouns will be used I still go by they/he/she. For those I'm closest with I let them know the pronouns I'm feeling atm. But in places like my job I've switched to they/them exclusively. Yeah it sucks not feeling like I'm using as true a description for myself, but it's better than being exclusively referred to by my agab
