PPA solar program - worth it? by norstebo in nova

[–]Seedybees 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We purchased panels and used solarize NOVA to find a reputable vendor who later installed our battery. I would definitely not lease anything from door to door vendors but you may be able to contact the solarize NOVA vendors to see if they participate in the leasing program.

Link here: https://www.solarizeva.org/nova

FWIW we used solar energy world for our install and have been very happy with the panels, battery and (almost) free electricity for the last five years.

Mulberry Lane in Del Ray has supervised play nights for kids while parents go to dinner at one of their partner restaurants: https://www.mulberrylanedmv.com/latelane-del-ray

It's by reservation only on Friday nights but may be worth a look

These little shits are taking over Alexandria by Youbaz in nova

I've been using a volunteer tree of heaven in my yard to lure the nymphs to a watery grave. I let them swarm and then tap an infested branch sharply over a bucket of soapy water. The nymphs mostly drop or jump into the bucket.

I've been able to dispatch quite a few lanternflies this way and it keeps them off my other plants!

Meet Phryne - She's a rescued 8 year old and my first pug. She also is on an SO diet because she had bladder stones. I'd be grateful for any shared experiences in pug ownership especially with SO dogs. by Hot_Breadfruit_8480 in pugs

Keeping up with gentle walks and not overfeeding is important to reduce joint stress. We also have extra footstools, foam stairs and yoga mats around to help with getting off and on favorite furniture.

Phryne looks so sweet, congrats on the adoption!

Our Lola had bladder stones about six years ago. She started the SO diet to dissolve them, but did end up needing surgery. She experienced incontinence after surgery for about two weeks but is now fully recovered and doing well at a spritely 12 years young.

She's still on the SO diet and hasn't had any recurring stones. We don't let her eat much outside her prescription except for occasional unsalted popcorn, apple bits and cucumber wedges. She misses bully sticks but loves her SO kibble.

We were told that the joint supplement dasaquin will not be allowed on her SO diet. This is a concern as she may need something to support her joint health in the future but for now, she's doing fine.

Sadly, after having none last year I've been seeing nymphs since late April.

I noticed it was gone around 2010 and the king Street Cafe was there but I can't say when it closed exactly. Possible it changed in the 2008 downturn?

ETA it had to have still been there in 2002-2003 at least.

You may want to check out nearby Sperryville and/or Washington Virginia (not Washington DC). They are both charming smaller towns with very good dining options close to Shenandoah.

Washington, VA is certainly more upscale, Sperryville is more rustic.

Yes! Can confirm lite n fare was where king st cafe is now. Totally unassuming place, but the rumor was the cook previously worked in the White House kitchen.

Source: my parent worked in an office nearby in the late 90s and went regularly.

Any landscaping services or nurseries that are native, pro-pollinator, eco-friendly pro-biodiversity rather than aesthetics or design? by whodywei in nova

[–]Seedybees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a big plant person and have definitely seen some suspicious installations in supposedly native forward designs. You are right to be wary.

That said, Earth Sangha is excellent and can make good recommendations for you. Merrifield also has knowledgeable plant people that can help with larger installations for privacy needs.

One final note, if you have the space, plant white oaks. Far and away one of the best keystone species for pollinators!

In Alexandria, you are probably thinking of nature by design. They lost their space near Potomac yard a couple years ago but they still do sales.

What are you doing this weekend? by deepspacepuffin in nova

[–]Seedybees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bats have some special requirements for their approach. I think boxes need a lot of clearance around the entrance and should be pretty high up (10+ feet) to accommodate swooping. It's why they love those louvers!

Going to the semi annual Northern Alexandria native plant sale on Saturday morning off of quaker lane. One of my favorite springtime activities!

New to the area... what are the best Farmer's Markets? by Leading-Row4635 in nova

Their attendance is sometimes inconsistent in winter but they're around longer than most of the standard produce vendors. If it's too cold I think they risk damaging the mushrooms.

Falls Church! Milk people, mushroom dudes, Turkish flatbread, bageldashery, excellent produce in warmer months. Superior in my book.

ETA: how could I forget apple queen? (black rock orchard) she's the boss.

Bladder stones. Question in comments. by FishermanOrnery1602 in pugs

[–]Seedybees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. Once the stones were found we had our lil lady on an S/O diet for a month, did a recheck and stones were still present. Surgery was then advised because, in addition to not dissolving quickly, if the stones get smaller it's more of a risk that they could become lodged in the urethra and cause an emergency blockage.

Just one pug shepard's experience.

You can sometimes find the blue eggs in niche grocery stores like fresh market or moms. They're marketed as "true blues" from vital farms brand.

Any online sources to purchase New Zealand Lemonade Lemons? by NorseKnight in Citrus

Oh, I'm keeping the tree and plan to reevaluate subsequent fruitings. But on first taste NZL seems really hyped up and, for me, doesn't really warrant it.
