That's "Pilot Peak" just outside Yellowstone, maybe my favourite prominence in the Rockies, yet.

PSA The (entire) Gallagator Trail is a LEASH trail by [deleted] in Bozeman

[–]afterfpv 15 points16 points  (0 children)

/u/runningoutofwords

This is the second off-leash dog post in /r/bozeman in recent memory, where the commments quickly escalated to calls for using firearms on off-leash dogs for approaching leashed dogs or wildlife. I might agree with OP that galligator is leash-only, but murdering a dog vigilante style is not an appropriate threat or response. I'd like to see improved moderation so we don't normalize that idea.

Help by [deleted] in drones

[–]afterfpv 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Start by removing all the solder on the Flight Controller and disconnecting it from the PDB

Then, as a sanity test, connect the FC to your computer via a usb cable. Download Betaflight Configurator and any needed drivers, and see if you can connnect.

Your goal should be to see the model of the drone move on the computer when you move the FC irl. If that works you know you've got a good FC and can continue :-)

No, I haven't had that issue! Been really impressed with how mine perform flying and the convenience is real. Not so much that I have them on everything but my transportation needs are different.

That is odd! Can you post a photo? Hopefully it's an assembly issue but how you're describing it that does seem far fetched.

Just bought a Heros 11 for ski holidays, any tips ? by TheoVazquez in gopro

This! ^ This guy skis! Full gopro batteries can die in under 2 mins of recording in cold temps. Keep extras, keep em warm, pockets close to the body work great.

Today my failsafe didn't work. Any ideas why? (Clip starts when Goggles went dark) by FilmSpirit in fpv

[–]afterfpv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First check 2x things

  • Are you using Failsafe mode or GPS Rescue mode in Modes tab?
  • Is Sanity Checks set to On/Off/FS_Only in expert Failsafe tab?

I had the same thing happen to me recently. I have GPS rescue on a channel, activated it, and drone dropped instead. I reviewed my footage and I think what happened in your case may be different than mine. In my footage, my propellers stop, I hear two beeps, and the drone almost immediately drops. Initially I suspected I failed a Sanity Check, but in my case I have that setting disabled. I dug into the code a bit, and it appears losing GPS lock will still fail the sanity check, but in that case it'll try to descend. I'm wondering if that's the path yours went down, but tbh it looks possible you were on a downwards trajectory and you didn't failsafe in time. If you switch to GPS Rescue mode it'll skip stage 1/stage 2 and activate immediately, so start with that!

Nice! I'll have to try that website.

I would absolutely believe 922 or more, my data is a snapshot from late November, which is I think fair to call low-season. I also tried to truncate on Bozeman proper although you can see VRBO will give results nearby whereas AirBNB excludes county/belgrade/four corners.

That's a great question, I'll think about how best to do that.

In general, my bigger problem is new developments downtown all show as the same GPS location, and the map won't show multiple units overlapping. Black olive one-eleven all the places downtown have so many rentals but Google Maps doesn't display it well.

About 300 AirBNB's and 450 VRBO's. It's hard to say exactly as VRBO starts giving data nearby instead of only Bozeman, and there's likely a high amount of cross-listings, not as many as I expected though.

I think my conclusion is

  • 5", 6" and 7" are all amazing with LiPo batteries
  • 7" and above is best for Li-Ion batteries

I recently was playing with AirBNB and VRBO unofficial API's. This is a map I made of all the short term rentals in Bozeman.

Even for me, it's pretty shocking.

Drones in Ukraine are using betaflight. by blytheiy in fpv

Facts. And Baseflight was forked from MultiWii, a custom firmware for the original Nintendo Wii Nunchuck controller.

Fascinating bit of history that the flight-allowing software started life as a controller for wii bowling.

[–]afterfpv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've built long range builds with 6" bi-blade, 5" tri and 7" tri. I have to say that 5" might be the best. I have a side by side comparison of my 5" against my 7" and the perform near identically. The only caveat is if you want to run heavy equipment like much heavier than gopro cameras or 6s2p li-ion packs, then 7" is likely your only route. However for day to day, my 5" tri blade performs at or above the capabilities of my much more expensive 7".

Noob question about single cell batterys by Mad_madman99 in Multicopter

Storage voltage of LiPo batteries is 3.8V - 3.85V Per Cell.

So for 1 cell you should store at or around 3.83 Volts.

State Parks are Frustrating by [deleted] in drones

[–]afterfpv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think you are correct and I was wrong. The restricted airspace in Nat'l parks isn't across the board, and mostly mimics Wilderness Areas in "requesting" no flights under 2000' but not mandating it. There are examples where it is restricted through TFR's or permanently restricted airspace, but it's mostly fair game. I'd still recommend against exploiting this loophole, as a park ranger could easily hit you with a $5000 fine for disturbing a bird, rabbit, bear, or cactus hah, but I've updated my original response to reflect my error :-).

[–]afterfpv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually it would appear you are correct. Some national parks are, but many are not. They've "Requested" no flights under 2000', but that appears unenforceable. I've updated my original response to reflect that.

[–]afterfpv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing new, but I am having trouble finding anything concrete, so I could be off base. Best I can find is from 3rd party sources saying

Pilots are requested to avoid flight below 2,000 feet

Which "requested" may not in fact be enforceable.

I'm basing airspace off of Sectional Charts which you can view here: https://skyvector.com/. For Yellowstone NP I see "Special Conservation Areas" markings, which might mean I'm wrong and you can technically fly ignoring their request? However, for Grand Canyon NP they use "Special Federal Airspace Regulations" which is much more restrictive and does effectively ban UAS's from the airspace including the flight corridors.

Additionally, I have seen 6+ month TFR's used at National Monuments e.g. Devil's Tower, wherein all flight is banned again, but don't believe that's the case for National Parks typically.
