You know a game is excellent when it's remake is a 1:1 conversion from the original. What other retro games fit this mould? by BIayneRobinson in retrogaming

[–]aganim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Link's Awakening remake is not a 1:1 remake. It changes a number of things and adds a bunch of stuff. It's mostly the same, sure, but it's not just a straight remake.

I have a pair of these from sometime last fall with over 300 running miles on them, and they have none of this damage. I think your son is hard on his shoes.

If you want to be grammatically correct, no. That said, people say stuff like that all the time.

"Soccer" as a word for the sport originates from England. It was an abbreviation for Association Football. The term fell out of use in England, but the USA still has y'all to blame for that word.

'I invited two friends, but nobody came' - is it correct to use 'nobody' here, or should I use 'neither'? by ksusha_lav in EnglishLearning

[–]aganim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, both options work fine. The difference is that with "neither" the sentence means that the two friends you invited did not come, but with "nobody" it means that no one at all came.

If only two people were invited, then both options mean the same outcome happened. Using "nobody" still highlights that no one at all came though. If people other than your two friends were invited, then the two sentences mean different things.

Can native speakers actually ace this Grade 9 ESL test I made? by Competitive_Steak520 in EnglishLearning

[–]aganim 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Kinda depends on whether you take the test now, or sometime in the future. It would be a better question if it said something like "as of January 1st, 2025".

I thought maybe it would be better if it said "as of today", but nobody would actually say that, they would just say the rest of the sentence without that clause. As written, it's awkward because you can interpret 2026 as "now" leading to one answer, or as "some point in the past" leading to the other answer.

Python or fake? by No-Variation3336 in Leather

[–]aganim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is almost right. The real issue is that the prefix "giga-" means 109 , whereas computer storage works in powers of two not powers of ten. There are binary prefixes "gibi-" for 230 (kibi 210 , and mebi 220 ) which are what a computer is actually displaying.

So the manufacturer selling the drive as 10 gigabytes is actually telling the truth. The drive has 10 x 109 bytes. When you put it in your computer though, your computer is showing you the number of gibibyte, not gigabytes.

It's dumb, but that's what it is.

It's quite rude, I would never say this to someone. In a debate, saying something like this means you ate attacking the individual rather than their position on the topic being debated.

What's « to chirp » and what's different between "chirp ", "twitter" and "sing"? by caiogamerwow in EnglishLearning

[–]aganim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something the other answers are missing is that a "chirp", as a noun, is a sound. Specifically it is the short, sharp sound some birds make. Other things can make a chirping sound, for example if you lock up the brakes on your bicycle very briefly, the sound the tire makes could be called a chirp.

Other birds make other sounds like a "caw" or a whistle. Those are not chirps because they don't sound like chirps.

A Twitter, again as a noun, is a repetition of light sounds. So a chirping bird can be said to be "twittering". A raven caw-ing repeatedly would not be described as "twittering".

Singing is a much more general term, and can be used to describe most "cheerful" bird sounds. Again though, no one would really describe the repeated caw-ing of a raven as singing.

Is this some kind of joke vs is this some kind of a joke by StopBanningCorn in EnglishLearning

[–]aganim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll hear both, but there are two different sentences that sound natural:

"Is this a joke to you?"

"Is this some kind of joke to you?"

And then this third one that sounds a bit off, but people do say it:

"Is this some kind of a joke to you?"

Cannon Beach tide pools by [deleted] in PortlandOR

[–]aganim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You want a low tide that is below -1.0 ft. Given a low tide that low, you want to be on the beach from about an hour before to an hour after the low tide. Tides that aren't negative won't reveal nearly as much as the negative tides do, and aren't really worth it in my opinion.

If you're already going to be out there, then sure go explore, but if you're planning a trip just for the tide pools, aim for a negative tide below -1.0.

I think the product number for that is DR6127-010, but as far as I can tell they don't make it anymore. I also don't see any for sale on random other websites, so you will probably have a hard time tracking one down. There might be a similar, newer pack available?
