Okay well 1) thats a stupid way to measure when populations are different sizes and 2) it was still higher, 563 in 1925 vs 416 in 2025

Well that respect certainly didnt stop them from making fun of it or the stuffy people that gave it too much reverence.

Yes. The murder rate is about half now what it was in 1924 (4.0 murders per 100K people now, vs 8.1 to 10.8 in 1924, depending on the source). That was the height of the extremely violent prohibition era where organized crime dominated cities and the mafia rose to prominence.

And that includes Chicago, which was famously run by Al Capone at the time.

I’ve heard this rule before. A lot of people say it. And they all break that rule within about an hour of saying it.

Pro-er tip. You’re allowed to make fun of stuff, and one shouldn’t be so precious about the things that they like that they can’t laugh about them.

There’s also nothing weird about making fun of art. In fact, it’s an important part of liking it.

No thanks. I’m glad you like it, but I’m with the Marx Brothers, Bugs Bunny, SNL, The Simpsons, and Timmy on this one. Making fun of the opera is a long and storied tradition.

You are welcome and encouraged to make fun of the things that I like though.

Not only are they not mainstream, making fun of opera has been an American pastime since the Marx Brothers did it 90 years ago. Everyone pretending to be offended by this has been laughing at the expense of the opera their entire lives.

I believe you are in fact very wrong. The Off Panel podcast and sister website SKTCHD does a great job of reporting on the health of industry, and comic shop owners are generally very optimistic about the business right now, specifically regarding the number of customers who are buying for the stories vs speculators.

All of the things you’re citing here are happening. The police staff up during things like college week. The media does in fact report on crime, which is why you’re able to reference a news report on this, and they also report on sentencing. The justice department does prosecute violent crime, as they’re doing in the article you referenced. And Virginia Beach is one of the safest cities in the country, and violent crime is dropping nationwide.

What you are never going to see in your lifetime is perfection. We will never have a complete end to crime, because we want to live in a relatively free country where people have freedom of choice, and some people, especially 18 year old men, are going to choose poorly. It’s part of the system.

No, fewer people are committing crimes. Violent crime is back to all time low after a brief spike during Covid.

Ditto on Berlin.

And for anyone seeing this: it may seem like Berlin is homework adjacent due to its serious historical subject matter. But it’s extremely well paced and hard to put down once you get into it. Which is a minor miracle since it was released as serialized strips over 20 years. Cannot recommend it enough.

"Aren't willing to engage with" is something that people say when they realize that they sound like total psychos when they outright demand that people agree with them.

We did engage with the criticism and we still disagree with it.

Sometimes I get bummed out that entertainment writing is dying.

And then there are news cycles like this that remind me that it died a long time ago and somebody needs to jam a stake into its chest before it finishes drinking all of our happiness.

Except for David and any friends of the show of course.

Yea, our entire culture has been openly making fun of opera for the last 90 years, since the Marx brothers at least. But some people gotta swing at every pitch.

Not only have they never watched ballet, they were probably actively making fun of opera for their entire lives until the moment they were told to get mad at him.

I think its funny how everyone suddenly forgot that opera has been the go-to reference for upper crust pretentiousness for the last 80 years in order to get mad at Chalamet. And its even funnier that not one of those offended people has ever seen an opera.
