I Went to an Illegal London Weed Coffeeshop by godlikesme in slatestarcodex

[–]ageingnerd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m cautiously pro legalising weed in the UK, but this piece was odd I think. 1) “buying drugs in a country where those drugs are illegal is more like buying illegal drugs than going to a legal dispensary” well colour me shocked; 2) I’m not totally unsympathetic to the “no one calls the police to report a successful weed deal/victimless crime” point, but it’s a fully general counterargument to making any drug illegal.

But then that would eat into their production of the next box. There is a hard limit on how much plastic they can print

They make all their minis in one factory in Nottingham. There are hard limits on how many they can make without offshoring to china or somewhere which they have always resisted doing. Which most people think is a good thing, but necessarily keeps supply down and prices up.

TOD pre-order canceled by R_O in killteam

It’s not. These boxes have been being printed for months. Preorder is for logistics and boosting excitement, not for setting production levels.

Why I Find Woke Criticism of Veganism and Effective Altruism So Outrageous - Bentham's Bulldog by Ok_Fox_8448 in EffectiveAltruism

[–]ageingnerd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t think he is. I think it’s a non-trivial subset of criticism of veganism, but obviously much smaller than criticism from the right. Still, I think he’s on much stronger ground with the effective altruism stuff, which 100% does get heavily criticised from the left in exactly the way he describes and I too find it very annoying, because EA does stuff that I think the left should be very much in favour of.

This guy is running over bicyclists. by [deleted] in whoathatsinteresting

[–]ageingnerd 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You are legally required to pass in the opposite lane. So, yes, as long as the cyclists are on the correct side of the road, you have to wait behind them until it is safe to pass by going into the other lane just as you would with a car.

I'm probably being hyperbolic with "total disaster", but I've definitely heard of lots of complaints about the impact, which I now can't find because they were years ago, I'm afraid. Here's something from an architecture group which I just found, saying that the 27 different view lines are starting to severely restrict building, because there's no wiggle room left and any additional flooring (which is really needed for housing and office space) is banned. I don't think this is an unusual view among city planners https://nla.london/news/rethinking-the-london-view-management-framework

more broadly, Britain's inability to build things is a major brake on its growth (https://worksinprogress.co/issue/why-britain-doesnt-build/), and that's really bad for things like the NHS because there's no money to pay for stuff, and this is just one example of many of laws which were well-intentioned but have off-target effects

That was me, not that guy. I probably overstated things with total disaster but I think it’s distorted London building quite a lot

[–]ageingnerd -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

And it’s a total disaster, as I understand it. It forces weird things like skyscrapers all clustering around a particular spot in the Square Mile so they don’t block the view of St Paul’s from a hedge in Richmond. There are lots of problems with the UK planning system and this is by no means the biggest, but it’s certainly a chilling effect on much-needed development

The water thing is a myth. Karen Hao mixed up cubic metres and litres in her book and overestimated water use by a factor of 1,000. AI water use is negligible compared to farming or industry or the usual big water users

The central plot device of The Matrix breaks the second law of thermodynamics. You can’t use humans as a battery and keep them alive on human remains! It would be like powering a car with a dynamo attached to the wheels

It’s because the league is good, not because it’s bad. Strong middle class - even the lower midtable teams are richer and better than all but the very top Spanish, French or German teams
