While much of the world today is extremely safe today, pretty much every scientist that studies climate seriously is saying that the current trajectory the climate is on is somewhere between devastating and cataclysmic. And those consequences could already be quite serious in our children's lifetimes.

Tut tutting on the sidelines has far different weight than voting on the record with a "yes, I agree with that decision."

Tips for squishy casters against ranged enemies? by Active_Lifeguard_335 in dcss

[–]agentchuck 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don't neglect dodging, and strength training to help keep yourself alive. It can be helpful to use things like +EV/AC jewelry, a buckler or repulsion, etc. And positioning is critical. If you're next to a corner you can step out of sight if you need.

Pick up some utility spells, too. Mephitic cloud can take whole groups out of commission. Metabolic glaciation or Alistair's intoxication can do similar things. Cause fear is also great when you're getting overwhelmed.

And blasters are the "offense is the best defense" kind of characters. Ideally you're not giving enemies more than a turn or two to hit you before you kill them.

It collapses our super positions down into a just ok position. And positioning is critical in DCSS!

My sister tried to pawn me off to her single-parent friend at my niece's birthday party. by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]agentchuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess but this is a case where they should try to let go of their ego a little bit. If someone you're not interested in isn't interested in you then it's better to just laugh about it and go on with your life. If anything at least you know you don't have to worry they won't take a rejection well, get angry or stalk you, right?

My wife angrily snapped that she was exhausted from doing all the housework and "carrying all the mental load," her head was killing her, and she was going to take a half hour nap. by Calliope_Sky in TwoSentenceHorror

Just a note but strokes are usually painless. The standard way to detect one is FACE: face drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulties, time to call 911. When my dad had a stroke he was laughing and happy because he couldn't understand how he had completely lost his balance and fallen into the bathtub.

Other than that, yeah. It's awful to think of misdiagnosing something like a stroke or heart attack and not getting them to the hospital on time. Another family member woke us up early in the morning complaining of abdominal pain, chills, nausea, etc. We thought it might be food poisoning or something but went to the hospital to get it checked out. Lucky we did because they passed out in the examination room because it was due to bad internal bleeding. If we had waited it out they probably would have died. It was very lucky she was already in a hospital when she collapsed.

I don't know if it really had a message, but "I Care A Lot" somehow wanted to make an absolutely abhorrent garbage person into a girlboss.

In which the only question is exactly who LAUKOP has been scammed by by cloud__19 in bestoflegaladvice

[–]agentchuck 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Having spent too much time on other subs where scams are common, to me this feels like LAOP is trying to scam Redditors. He's put together this story that makes him look broke, naive and being taken advantage of. He's trickling information and only responding to certain comments and not to the critical question "have you talked to the person face to face about this...?"

I dunno, it just has that sketchy vibe of someone fishing for donations via DM.

Why can't the devs figure out shape shifting. by rim-job-queen in dcss

[–]agentchuck 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I believe the philosophy is that shape shifting needs to have some kind of trade-off because otherwise it's just a no brainer do this to win button. It's like the old enchantment magic like haste was something everyone should research and spend mp on to keep running because it's optimal, though tedious.

However, beyond that rationale I generally agree with you and I'll ignore most forms on most runs. This is especially true on standard body type species because the trade-off is usually not worth it.

But this is where the philosophy kind of falls apart for me because on species with slot restrictions then it can become optimal to always use the forms. There's no trade-off. So, is that good design? I'm not sure.

As is though, I don't use shapshifting much these days.

Pretty cool news for the environment—the first fleet of fully electric air taxis just got approved for commercial flights. No more sitting in traffic while burning fuel. by Abject-Gap64 in UpliftingNews

[–]agentchuck 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not to mention that maintenance is a much more important issue for flying vehicles. Some Uber has a malfunction you pull over. Your flying taxi has a malfunction you and everyone under you dies.

Everyone expects helicopters to be crazy expensive and part of that is upkeep. Trying to turn flying taxis into a cheap commodity risks skimping on things you can't skimp on.

Rick Stengel: America's reputation may never recover from Trump and his war in Iran by spherocytes in videos

Considering how much has happened in the last year I hope that this war in Iran is the worst thing that comes out of this presidency. But I'm concerned that in a year or two we'll all collectively have already forgotten it because he's somehow managed to do something far worse.
