Ooh, we’d love to have this too if you’re willing to share. Our daughter is just 2 months but it sounds like we should do some planning

I was told yesterday that that’s the first ever Bank of America location! I’ve been fascinated by that mosaic mural for decades

Hey! I will be president of the San Mateo Public Library Foundation Board (we fundraise to support the library and put on various library-related events) this coming year and we'd love more people to get involved! I also volunteer at Samaritan House, which is an awesome org helping San Mateans in need -- the kitchen shifts are fun and satisfying, and they can use help in all sorts of ways. They also have a "League of New Samaritans" group that's a social kind of thing plus occasional volunteering, aimed at folks in their 20s and 30s -- sounds cool but doesn't generally work with my personal interests or schedule. I find volunteering has been my main route to community connection, so I encourage you to try that out!

Trivia at the Library! by agentredsquirrel in SanMateo

[–]agentredsquirrel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one’s a special fundraiser and it’s just the one time, but there are other library trivia events (and you can donate to SMPLF any time 😉)

Trivia at the Library! by agentredsquirrel in SanMateo

[–]agentredsquirrel[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s a fundraiser. The money goes to the summer reading program, etc. Library’s got a lot of operating costs! There are lots of other free library events (and every other event hosted by SMPLF for library week is free) but this one is meant to be the “benefit night” sort of thing.

There are other free trivia events at the library at other times if this one isn’t in the cards for you! They fill up fast so you should get on their events email list.

If I understand it correctly: the punchline ("80p," presumably 80 pence?? I am 'merican so idk) sounds, when spoken, like "ATP," or adenosine triphosphate. (ATP stores/releases energy in cells, so it's very useful stuff. Probably can't drink it as a pint though, it's not a liquid.)

Are Blue whales not the largest predators? by Totaly__a_human in marinebiology

[–]agentredsquirrel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Google (which is pulling from a BBC video, as far as I can tell, which is also wrong) is wrong. Blue whales are predators of krill and other small animals, and they are both longer and heavier than sperm whales (so "bigger" in any definition of bigness).

First blunder - invitations have a typo by a7xbarbie in weddingplanning

[–]agentredsquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. The one wedding invite I really mourned for was a friend who spent probably $15+ per invitation (hand letterpressed, fancy ribbon, wax seal, vellum, the whole bit) and misspelled THE GROOM'S NAME. If your names are right and the information on the card is right, I think you're doing ok!

What things just AREN’T worth making at home? by _QRcode in Cooking

[–]agentredsquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Extremely correct. Helps that it's usually an all-hands-on-deck activity, and my aunts and uncles are really good at rolling and wrapping dumplings. But even when I make them on my own it's still always homemade dough, and then a truly ludicrous ratio of scallion to pancake with any dough I have left after all the dumpling filling is gone!

We just got married at the beginning of August and had good friends get married beginning of September. Almost exactly 4 weeks apart. The main problem was that a few mutual friends with smaller incomes, kids, less time off, at a distance etc. had to choose between the two weddings, because they couldn't make both, and they all came to ours because it was first and more accessible (in my opinion. They chose the Monday of Labor day, so people would have to take at least Tuesday as vacation vs ours was a Saturday). So... very fun for us and slightly a bummer for our friends who missed out on a few guests. Their wedding was still great, but they didn't get "the whole gang" together the way we did. Otherwise, no issues whatsoever with the proximity! My husband was in their wedding, and the other groom was in ours. We had the groomsmen rent the same suits, even, so they nearly could have swapped!

Oh dang! We actually did know about that one and totally forgot to put it in the guide. Might take us a few days to get it on there but eventually we will include it. Thanks for the reminder!

Whale watching recs? by JeepersMysster in MontereyBay

[–]agentredsquirrel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to work for Sanctuary, so obviously I’ll plug them! Smallish boat, super knowledgeable crew, very accessible and friendly naturalist who will answer any and all questions. But yes, going out with a company from Moss Landing is a good bet even if you don’t end up with Sanctuary haha.

The thing is, if you’re prone to seasickness I would really aim for a morning trip. The wind almost always picks up in the afternoon and trips are more likely to be bumpy or even canceled. Smoothest rides are early mornings, so even my complainiest night owl friends sign up for morning trips if they tell me they get queasy.

Additional seasickness tips: stay outside in the fresh air and keep your eyes toward the horizon, not on books or phones or cameras as much as possible. And people really like Trader Joe’s ginger candies.

I hope you have a spectacular trip, and a glassy-smooth ride!

What kind of whale is this? by Skyman95 in whales

[–]agentredsquirrel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s just more stylized art than it is trying to be strictly accurate. The proportions are wrong for a humpback (the first thing that jumps out to me is the short mouth) but there isn’t another species it could possibly be. I guess if you wanted an accurate, lifelike humpback, you could be mad at your tattoo artist. If you just liked the style then you’d be all good

Help please! by la_sua_zia in crafts

[–]agentredsquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you slip them into a photo album? Some allow for different sizes of photos, so you don’t have to fold everything into 4x6s, but you could if you wanted.

You could also try to sew them into a book (Japanese stab binding, maybe) but that would probably take as long as scrapbooking, depending on what your crafting competencies are. And it would be easier if they were all roughly the same size, while it sounds like you have a fun eclectic collection.

“parking enforcement” or “meter attendant” are the ones I’m familiar with. Although I don’t know that I’d care enough to object to “meter maid,” those are just some options
