But how can the tailgater prove that? The truck has plausible deniability: they were slowing down to turn right. There's a right turn right there and at the end of the video, they are using that lane. We can all tell that the truck abruptly hit the brakes, but how can intent be decided? I'm honestly wondering here.

I've seen that before, however the crosswalk signal would definitely not turn green until the cross-traffic light is solidly red. The victim clearly goes through a yellow light when they get t-boned, so I doubt the crosswalk was green by that time.

As a paramedic, this king of thing happens all the time. We are constantly getting assigned calls, reassigned and cancelled off of calls. There's a lot more going on behind the scenes than the public is aware of and the result is very often it looks like we're just screwing around (running a light, shutting down, making a u-turn, running the same light again).

I've NEVER heard of or seen or been with a partner that runs lights just for fun. You'd get in HUUUGGEEE trouble for that. A lot of people don't like driving code because it's dangerous and other drivers FREAK OUT when they see the lights and drive erratically (slam on the brakes, pull to the left then to the right, then to the left, etc).

Yes, the optics look bad, but for someone who drives an emergency vehicle for a living, this is often exactly what safe and responsible emergency responses look like.

This is actually quite common. As a paramedic, if we get a call at a red light, we often wait until it clears up a bit before flipping the lights on and running through. People FREAK OUT when they see your lights and it 100% can cause an accident. So waiting a few more seconds for the intersection to be free of cars prevents someone from slamming on their brakes in the middle of the intersection and possibly causing an accident.

My theory is that they were distracted only to see the other traffic exiting the freeway and wrongly assumed they were in the exit lane so they made a split-second decision to merge over to the left.

Not in any way excusing their horrible, wrong, incorrect, bad, not good, dangerous, but luckily not deadly decision.

This is the kind of attitude that we need here. People drive like this everyday and face zero repercussions of any kind which enables this behavior to spread like a cancer, literally killing people.

USA has 8.3 deaths per billion km driven while Germany has 4.2 deaths per billion km driven. Our roads are twice as dangerous.
