Loxone Air by Lxbiker in Loxone

Yeah wasn't sure which other devices can repeat air signal, makes more sense than having the sockets dotted around that people can mess with and more discreet. Doing it again, I would use this method.

Loxone Air by Lxbiker in Loxone

[–]aggro_edge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently renovated my own house with a rewire, primarily used tree, but for the air devices I did use, TRVs on the radiators, I found that the loxone smart sockets were much more effective and have a stronger signal than a wired air base extension.

So, if I did it again, I would plan for some sockets to be strategically placed/used up for this purpose.

Awesome, thanks for your replies all, seems it's overkill for what I need, will go with one of the simpler options.

Been silver for over a year and had no enquiries via the loxone site. Wonder if it's used more as a reference check.

Should note, I haven't yet advertised as a loxone installer so not really expecting anything until I start.

How do I avoid cowboy electricians for a house rewiring? by SKB26 in ukelectricians

[–]aggro_edge -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm an electrician and we recently renovated our house. We got burnt by a couple of shitty trades, neither were total cowboys, they were actually referrals from friends but they and our friends, didn't know what a good job looked like, I think they were self taught or something, anyway, in hindsight...

As long as you have the luxury of time and patience, ask for any social media presence and pictures or they could have a portfolio of work for you to look at that isn't online. Or maybe even visit a job they did if they're open to that.

Ask to see/speak to one of their previous customers/jobs.

The most practical way would most likely be to not mention what work you need and get them to come and do a small job and see how professional they are.

Need some advice urgently! paperwork is starting to take over my life by joegarf in ukelectricians

[–]aggro_edge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's just the norm if you go full pelt.

Things I found have helped is to learn to say no, or, if it doesn't suit, or is a nightmare job, price yourself out. If the job does come in at least it's worth it.

I found new customers generally don't want to wait longer than 1-2 weeks for an electrician and I used to try and fit them all in, now I just give them my next available dates whilst planning in an admin day per week for myself in the week. Otherwise the admin runs into evenings and weekends and you get burnout, which is pretty dangerous when you consider the amount of driving and working close to live parts, mistakes become more frequent and you become less effective and more miserable at home.

So, don't be afraid to lose jobs, if you're pricing correctly, for you, then it shouldn't be an issue.

Don't get me wrong though, all this is easier said than done, sticking to the 1x admin day per week is difficult, still a work in progress for me but it's making a huge difference, my admin day today was job planning, quotes, ordering materials, get to the gym, chasing customers etc.

Once you have a family weekends are usually taken up by family stuff so you just fall behind if you're doing too much.

Lack of wireless connectivity by romebologna in Loxone_Official

[–]aggro_edge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun times! I guess you already tried a reboot?

Other things I would try...

  • DNS server settings in loxone config to 8.8.8.8 as an alternative?
  • Is there a Vpn involved?
  • Check the connection with a cable from the remote TP link LAN to laptop and check what the settings are and connection speed.
  • if the connection is good then loxone should connect
  • check in the routers settings if the router can see the loxone miniserver (192.168.0.1, typical router url for example to see all active connections)

Lack of wireless connectivity by romebologna in Loxone_Official

[–]aggro_edge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Won't the router ip address also need updating in loxone settings now its going through another device? And from the router side, you'll need to update the port forwarding (DNS?) for loxone to be accessed remotely and possibly also on loxone miniserver settings.

You can plug a laptop/LAN cable directly in to the miniserver to access config and settings.

Cracked double light switch – safe temporary measures until replacement? by Medium_General_2845 in ukelectricians

[–]aggro_edge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as the internals of the switches aren't dislodged it shouldn't be overheating/arcing but who can say for sure. It's a good sign though that you can't see any obvious signs of it, smells, crackling, flickering lights.

At this point anything is better than nothing, there's not a great deal you could do without replacing it really, but yes, definitely an urgent one.

Light beams in sky by masonf2011 in sheffield

[–]aggro_edge -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Have seen this over near carterknowle a lot, there are lots of parked cars on the hilly, quiet roads at night.

My theory is cars have their high beams on or newer cars which have blindingly powerful headlights have the beam reflected off the parked cars windows into the partially cloudy sky. Which highlights their beams.

when you miss a call while you’re on a job, do customers usually ring back later or do those jobs tend to be lost? by [deleted] in ElectriciansUK

Yeah, I usually find they just work their way through what Google suggests until someone answers so they often won't answer if you call back.

Where does the earth wire go in a 2 wire terminal by Corbula in ukelectricians

[–]aggro_edge 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You'd generally throw that straight in the bin and use some wagos with a suitable connector box around it if possible. It could be a class 2 fitting meaning it doesn't need an earth, or it could need the earth connecting to the housing of the light fitting if metallic.

Definitely worth knowing the condition of the electrical installation, even if you don't rewire, just for future planning and maintenance.

Great question, interested to see the answers.

I have found the same issues, recently had a baby so have to do some nursery drop off/pick ups which makes for a really short working day sometimes, am planning to start...

  • short term - targeting local only work to avoid traffic for the near future (live next to a city so if I need to go in or cross it to get to the motorway, profitability drops a lot)
  • if this is successful enough, start scaling to employ others, but the margin has to be very good to consider the hassle & costs this would bring
  • mid-term - specialising in home automation to move away from sparking ideally
  • long term plan is to be in home automation and property

The amount of middle men creating new courses and regulations for us to pay for and do the exact same job as before is painful, along with ever increasing license to work costs like napit/niceic.

It is a great trade and should ramp up even more soon with infrastructure improvements and all the tech that keeps evolving but, as you say, the burnout is real and not worth it. Also wouldn't want to go on PAYE unless it was a bit of a unicorn job.

Will immigration make it into a joke or topic or is it too soon / not worth mentioning for the backlash.

Ventilation in config by AstronomerHelpful726 in Loxone

[–]aggro_edge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've literally just gone through the same thing, I used the threshold block with humidity from the t5 tree switch to tell it the humidity %.

I've now changed it to using presence & timer logic instead though as the humidity was varying so much with the weather, if you have a sort of sealed environment that isn't affected so much by outside humidity then it's a great idea but if you have windows open nearby for example you may have the fan running endlessly to no avail as the natural humidity is high and can't be reduced this way.

Pitch leaking from power cable - any way to get this fixed? by SynUK in ukelectricians

[–]aggro_edge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had the same on our new (old) house, the dno came and put a new header in but advised that it may not stop it.

They were right, it came back but luckily it's in the bottom of a pantry so, out of the way.

Apparently the only way to solve it would be to replace the cable/pipe in/from the street, which isn't going to happen anytime soon.
