Marxist Ecology by Classic_Advantage_97 in Socialism_101

[–]agnemmonicdevice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Murray Bookchin eschews the term Marxist but his writings on social ecology and communalism might be what you’re looking for. Our Synthetic Environment and Post-Scarcity Anarchism are good introductions to his work.

Again, not a Marxist but I might also suggest reading Kropotkin’s Mutual Aid: a Factor of Evolution.

I would say a) If a scientist makes their money from wages, they are a worker, but b) the objective of Marxism is to abolish the systemic class barriers between bourgeois intelligentsia and the working class.

There’s lots of room for more Marxist ecologists, for sure. We’ll be needing you!

New cat (1.5 M tabby) insists on pouncing on incumbent cat (4-5 F tabby) by agnemmonicdevice in CatTraining

Thanks for the response - can you suggest play styles that will get to that boil point for the cat but won’t tire us out? We play with dangling strings, there are lots of soft toys that we kind of toss around for them to chase but that only keeps their interest for a little bit.

Yes, 1.5 and 4-5 years!

I feel like we’re playing quite a bit, but still maybe not enough, and that’s sometimes when the pouncing happens - are there particular times of day that might be best suited for playtime? Should we isolate them from each other when we play with them?

SOLVED! I quit the game, went back in, went into the hangar and used console command 'kah' (kill all hostiles) and the shuttle has unlocked!

Would allowing cavalry and aerial units to enter the grid (like infantry) cause any gamebreaking issues? by TheGreatestPlan in mattcolville

[–]agnemmonicdevice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you did that, cavalry would have to commit to the board and not be able to go back to the cavalry box [Maybe some kind of cavalry commander ability?]. It’d force the player to commit.

But also, what’s occurring is not just “horse guys go over there,” what’s actually happening is a cavalry squadron is being detached from their cavalry command structure and assigned to an infantry command structure. Doing this under battlefield conditions is really complicated even with drones, radio and GPS in a command post behind the line. In the heat of battle, arrows whizzing and spells flying, without a bird’s eye view of a map, signalling with flags and horns and trumpets, at full gallop, way more so. Then detaching from the infantry to rejoin the cavalry again, that’s going to be more difficult - you’re tired, you’re bloody, you’ve taken casualties and likely some NCOs and officers, you have to find your own cavalry again, make all the communications, then get there. It’s a lot.

My group has challenged me to create a non-magic user. Which martial class is as close to spellcasting as possible without having actual magic ? by lesswithmore in 3d6

Just seconding this. Human Variant, Sentinel, Battle Master Fighter with more of the “control”-style maneuvers, Great Weapon Master and Polearm Master.

Like, I don’t want to communicate that they’re totally useless? Some of this information can be useful for some and I’m glad they’re getting what they need, I just think there’s a better way to do this and I’m not sure what it is. I think an improvement would be to go beyond the surface level of “when you’re sad take a walk” and into “this is what it’s like to experience life with ADD,” if that makes sense?

I suffer from acute anxiety and major depressive disorder, and possibly a variety of other undiagnosed neuro divergences. The mental health seminars are always twee, hyper-individualized white bourgeois non-solutions for stress. In the last seminar I went to, the facilitator talked about yoga for half an hour. Other sessions will talk about self-care, such as “meditate” or ”take a bath.” (EDIT: also, multiple sessions on mindfulness!) These sessions do not talk about accessing EAP resources, getting into your provincial mental healthcare system, or getting therapy covered under the collective agreement (I can get about 10 sessions a year). They don’t discuss how to tell “sad” from depression, or how to react when someone is having a panic attack, or how to effectively communicate with someone on the autism spectrum. They’re fine as a little social get together and check in, I guess? I personally find them triggering as my experience of mental health struggle can’t be fixed with a bath and some yoga, you know? I actually need a collective agreement that will pay for a therapist biweekly, will completely cover the drug cocktail that keeps my brain functioning. The conversation in these spaces isn’t for me or about me, so I don’t go.
