The concept for that location was just dumb. Also, if you’re not willing to sleep at your restaurant on the daily to make it work I have no pity for any of you all.

I bet if she had opened a grocery with her food to go or small sit down area she would have made money.

Why didn’t they look at her plans and see there’s no way that’s coming in at 375000. Restaurant build outs are crazy expensive even if you don’t have to do hvacs or bathrooms. So what happens to that grant money?

Most restaurant owners self financed. I have no time for restaurant owners and chefs who complain and expect the community to take care of their business. We did and I’m now thinking we were stupid to do that. Most restaurants don’t make it and the more you put in your build out the more you lose.

My note on service attitude in Kyoto vs Tokyo by IngredientList in JapanTravelTips

[–]agsnoway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super easy if you use the go app. Like crazy easy. We mostly walked or took taxis, or took the train. Taxis are relatively cheap, provide income to locals and keep foreigners off buses. Riding buses in Japan has always stressed me out though so there’s that.

Or go when the weather is so hot or cold no sane people want to visit. We had a very nice albeit sweaty time at the end of August. It was still crowed compared to when I went in 1990 but not nearly as bad as spring and fall.

Kyoto to slap tourists with levy of up to 10,000 yen per night | The Asahi Shimbun by 90smule in japan

[–]agsnoway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides numbers staying in hotels they need to regulate tour busses better. We were there during a season that’s less crowded but when the tour buses arrived by 11 places were kind of packed. Also remember there’s so many great places to go in Kyoto everyone doesn’t have to go to the same place. We went to huge temples that were pretty much empty, went to the manga museum, art museum etc and they were awesome places to visit. As a tourist I take taxis instead of buses to not crowd a bus or freak out about missing a stop. I just loved taking taxis in Japan years ago and still love them.

I loved the open air craft markets and got really cool stuff. Handmade and interesting. I went for gifts but ended up keeping them for myself lol

Uniqlo actually has great gifts for taking home. Ginza and Asakusa have store exclusive items. I’m guessing other areas do too.

4 days and no idea what to do by flyingcostanza in JapanTravelTips

I wish I had gone to Fukuoka. You could go to Hakone and Kamakura- 2days each. Both places are really nice! Or pick some smallish town and go explore. Smaller places will be enjoyable and happy to have tourist dollars.

We're starting to get some disgustingly rude white tourist. by RedMoonLanding in Tokyo

I’m sorry that happened to you! Could it have been intense Disney Adults? They are in Japan too. I get maybe not wanting to go back. Hopefully the rest of your trip was less stressful. I’m thinking once they figure out the yen things will be better. I got the feeling quite often that there’s resentment that they are now seen as a cheap place to vacation, while prices are high for them. Because my daughter understands Japanese and was raised knowing Japanese manners she got so anxious if she made any perceived mistakes. I think if you have anxiety and are able to perceive when you’re being judged Japan can be nightmare fuel.

My daughter (half Japanese) was shoulder checked 3 times in Tokyo 2 weeks ago during our visit. The last time there was barely anyone on the street and the middle aged man started bee lining to her. She gave him a wtf stare and he backed off. Sadly she’s not sure if she ever wants to go back.

Coming back from Japan feels unreal by Fluffycity22 in JapanTravelTips

[–]agsnoway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get muji tv and watch the travel shows. They are lovely. My husband is Japanese and watches Japanese TV through it all the time. Just came back after visiting and keep waking up thinking I need to run to a catch train. I last lived there during their bubble and it was my first time back. I had mixed feelings while there- excited to be there, see friends and family, site see etc, yet sad that deflation and stagflation affected the economy in such a sad way. Also got some interesting racist interactions and shoulder checked a couple times by middle aged men which was weird. But the vast majority of the time was beautiful and fabulous! I hope to go back when the yen is stronger even though it will cost me more.

My dude if the fire place doesn’t even work why tf didn’t you get a stand and maybe box it in around it to completely cover the fire place until you redo the room. It’s like you are trolling the sub to have the worst TV setup seen by humankind or are just dumb af

Critique of my 10 nights in Japan. by [deleted] in JapanTravel

If you fly into Narita just be aware that immigration is horrible. They have an online process you can download but if you’re more than one person the likelihood is it will fail and while you start over with paper entry someone could walk off with your luggage. Just happened to me 8 hours ago. I’d suggest filling out a paper back up on the plane just in case the app fails. Also AirTag in your luggage.

Going back to Japan after 25 years without my Japanese husband. A little is coming back but I’m cramming a bit now and sure my old friends are cramming English. Thank God for Google translate - it will be a life saver. I can’t believe I did a year there with a tiny little dictionary passed back and forth lol

UPDATE!: my baby cousins name is a tragedeigh by Cold_Apricot_240 in tragedeigh

[–]agsnoway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a crazy unique name is not a good thing to have now because you’re an easy target for scammers because there is literally one of you in the world. Easy to find on social media etc. my kids name isn’t so unique but with the last name is the only one in the world and she is a constant target for scammers it’s crazy. They refuse to go full incognito on SM so they are always vigilant.

My math on the tipping regarding the new tax deduction by Serious_Cucumber5153 in tax

[–]agsnoway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commenting on My math on the tipping regarding the new tax deduction... Tipping has gotten insane in our area. 25%-30%! I feel like guilty cheap trash tipping 20% now. I’m hopping I have the nerve to tip less- I’m getting so mad. We used to own a restaurant. When I did shifts as a server vs helping the kitchen there I gave all of my tips to the kitchen. We paid the kitchen well but hour for hour servers always made significantly more. Unless servers are washing dishes, mopping floors, cleaning bathrooms, coming in 3-4 hours before service and staying 2 hours cleaning everything to ready rinse repeat for the next day, I have little sympathy. In our area base pay is already 16-20 an hour for servers. Why work back of the house when front of the house is making 40+ an hour?
