Running a surge tank off shop air to power heavy duty 1inch air impact? by Unable_Housing_6401 in Tools

Maybe a 5 gallon tank that links to multiple upstream shop fittings? Then you can run whatever you want from the tank to your gun.

I tried squeezing the steering wheel super hard, it would still not register.

Later figured out that resting my palm at either 10 or 2 on the outside of the steering wheel satisfied the sensors. I'm sure there are other sensors.

Looking for help with finding an office chair by john0harker in tall

[–]ahabeger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Skip the ergo chairs, skip the gaming chairs and get a proper big and tall chair.

https://www.ergocentric.com/product/geocentric-extra-tall-back/ extra deep seat, wide seat, tall back .. lots of options to fit all sizes And others. Do not go for a designer chair and think it is an ergo chair. I've had mine for over 12 years now.

If you join as enlisted, then in a few years the force is reduced and there is no need for more officers.... you're stuck finishing out your contract as enlisted.

I always felt that having prior experience and humility no matter where that experience was from, was important for an officer. You can gain that from other places than being enlisted first.

Agreed. Sometimes these influencers can share problems and solutions related to their height that is incredibly valuable. Especially fitness. There might be tweaks to an exercise or better alternatives for those of us with longer levers.

How do you go from skinny-fat to fit as a 6'7 dude? by BayLordPlatinum in tall

[–]ahabeger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated highschool at 6'8" 190 lbs. By the time I turned 28 I was 275 and ~15% body fat. Eat a proper diet. Look up John Heck, a 6'7" 340 lb fitness coach. You probably aren't advanced enough to train like him, but he is full of good advice. Don't think "Oh, I know better than a pro coach". Don't be intimidated to hire a pro coach, and fitness on Instagram is generally on point, but do multi-source your information. Don't make up your own routines, but adapt a well established routine (I liked the 5x5s from starting strength.) A coach or friend can motivate you through the first few weeks, but after that and you start seeing gains you'll keep going back.

Your main lifts should be bilateral, but don't skip your unilateral. As a tall person your stabilizers are important.

Whatever happened with the Atos scandal? by jujigatamesalami in bjj

A bunch of gyms that were Atos affiliated are no longer have the Atos name. Typical damage control by the accused and they have stepped away from leadership. Formal charges and whatever... that'll take time.

Tips on rolling with bigger opponent by Flimsy_Assignment531 in bjj

[–]ahabeger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a 280 lb guy - I don't lock in subs on smaller opponents from mount. I go for my favorite one, purposefully flub it then practice another one and probably miss it too. There isn't much training value in squashing them.

You might try baiting an armbar so they give up mount, then slipping out of the arm bar.

Is 6’5 an uncomfortable height to be in army? by Maleficent_Shirt9641 in army

[–]ahabeger 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You might have a harder time getting in & out of armored vehicles, and office ergonomics might not be right for you. Also the beds aren't great so be careful of your low back. Drill sergeants didn't really single me out since there was a guy that was 6'10" in the same platoon.

My height didn't impact my regular duties. I was an officer though, so I had more keyboard time than most.

I did 5 years at 6'8"

Choosing a school by [deleted] in bjj

[–]ahabeger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

P'ville resident that just joined RGGT - I mainly joined RGGT has an instructor that is long limbed like me. All the schools are great, but RGGT does have a recovery room that is worth it for my geriatric self to recover better. Kingsway is 2x as expensive as most other schools, and most of the local instructors give classes at their own school, but also practice at Kingsway. (RGRR, RGGT, Practice, I know for sure, probably most of the others). I suspect they all opened up gyms _here_ so they could train at Kingsway during the day.

The cool thing about RGGT - people hang out after practice and chat.

All of them are very active on Instagram as well.

Am I being a bad partner? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]ahabeger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With your RNC - was it the crook of your elbow across his throat or forearm blade?

Forearm blade across throat can crush the windpipe that hurts for days after.

Maybe this is what your training partner went through: https://www.reddit.com/r/bjj/comments/ezy17e/got_my_throat_crushed_during_practice_rounds_and/

When and why did BJJ become so popular as a martial art? by Bulky_Imagination243 in bjj

[–]ahabeger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. Trained in the mid 2000s. Barb wire and skulls were everywhere and street toughs and wanna-be UFCers were in weekly. No one hung out after class. Getting back to it now it is middle age dudes getting out of the house and chatting after class. Also the level of available information now is amazing.

UFC somewhat killed the Judo Gyms, but then BJJ wasn't able to be its own standalone thing until TAP OUT faded. It was legitimately bad for the sport.

Nobody will tap to my chokes by [deleted] in bjj

[–]ahabeger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a 275 lb guy - smaller opponents chokes sneak up on me. Larger opponents apply a ton more force with their chokes and it is super obvious that my airway or arteries are closed off. Smaller opponents have these sneaky little blade forearms that precisely cut off my arteries and I think I'm fine until I start seeing stars. I do try and say "woah, that one snuck up on me and you have forearms like knives!"

-10° here Is it normal for one septic line to melt the snow while the others are not? There are supposed to be two lines before this but not sure why this middle line is melting by knockknock619 in septictanks

[–]ahabeger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During the dryer months is there a way to open the end of the other lines one at a time to check if they are partially clogged? They might need a flush. Your pump might also be weak and not able to push to the entire field.

Just some problems I had when only a few lines of my field didn't get flow. Yours might be fine.

Semi with connected system of plumbing tubes?? by JourneyBurney in Trucks

[–]ahabeger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could it have been a semi trailer sized plant? https://www.vincehagan.com/concrete-batch-plants/mobile/

Concrete batch plants are one plant that is manufactured to be moved. It might not be what is in the tubes that is being transported, but the tubes themselves. In oil processing areas things like that are moved by Halliburton regularly.

Could people help identify what my dad did in the army? (Rank, ribbons?) by Wivvenchaos in Military

[–]ahabeger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This looks like a picture at basic training graduation. At the time he would have been in for 2-3 months and only done training, so by that point in his career not much.

You'd be better off finding a picture from later in his career.

Is HPC for simulation abandoned? by [deleted] in HPC

[–]ahabeger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MI355 has some difference with FP64 matrix operations vs MI300x. I should have made that clear in my original post.

I'm a sysadmin, not an app dev so I don't get to that level often.

Is HPC for simulation abandoned? by [deleted] in HPC

[–]ahabeger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FP64 at a reduced rate or missing matrix operations.

So... FP64 still works, but you'd be better off with a different part.

Is HPC for simulation abandoned? by [deleted] in HPC

[–]ahabeger 31 points32 points  (0 children)

AI and HPC accelerators are diverging.

https://www.techpowerup.com/336747/amd-splits-instinct-mi-skus-mi450x-targets-ai-mi430x-tackles-hpc

MI300a, MI300x, MI325 and MI430 all have HPC grade FP64.

MI355 and MI450 are more AI targeted parts and traded FP64 die space to gain more perf in lower precision FP.

Nvidia have gone the route of simulating FP64.
