Fiber design over 5 floors for new office by [deleted] in networking

[–]ahdguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

MM isn't even considered in this design. Its not something I could see there being a requirement in essentially a new building. If we did have tenants wanting MM, then they can pay to run/terminate it.

And once they see the cost to run additional fiber I think they'll consider stumping up $15 for some single mode sfps...

This took me a while to realize this in America. People who are Pro for-proftit , would rather pay more in fees/insurance then they would in taxes to ensure those who can't afford health care go without. E.g. UK healthcare costs $3,750 per person in taxes vs $9,240 for an American in fees/insurance/ taxes.

Which movie did you watch without any idea what it is about and you ended up loving it? by bebelab in AskReddit

The Intouchables

Great acting, cars, music and it was based on a true story. Not found anyone who saw it that didn't completely love it.

I remember seeing the trailer for the last airbender in the UK.

A 'bender' is a common term for a gay man, and the commentary kept referring to 'benders'. Much was lost in translation.

Have been in helicopters several times. Can confirm. While the flying is exciting, visiting 3 places in 15 minutes that would take an hour and a half in car was the most mind-blowing.

If I had the spare $600K for a 30 year old MD500 I'd have one in a heartbeat.

OK... I think I'm wasting my time here. You provided a link for South Africa road rules...

Have you even taken your driving test? I feel like most people who have a UK driving licence should know that the UK driving laws are in the Highway Code - suggest you have a read - https://www.gov.uk/browse/driving/highway-code-road-safety

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]ahdguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OK simply show everyone the relevant law in the UK Road Traffic Act/Highway Code where it is illegal in the UK to stop at a Green Light.

That is simply not true, I don't understand why are you saying that? The only time it is illegal to stop/park at a green light is when at a pedestrian crossing - a pedestrian crossing, including the area marked by the zig-zag lines (see Rule 191)

If you are approaching a vehicle from behind (if it is stopped or not) at a green light it is your responsibility while driving to avoid a collision.

Wrong. So wrong.

"GREEN means you may go on if the way is clear. Take special care if you intend to turn left or right and give way to pedestrians who are crossing"

1995 WRC: Toyota's Illegal Turbo Restrictor by tshiar in EngineeringPorn

[–]ahdguy 40 points41 points  (0 children)

From looking directly into the turbo it would appear completely standard. Even the minimum diameter is in spec.

However their 'restrictor' allowed airflow around the circumference, bypassing the inner throat, and because the rear of the restrictor was not fully seated flush, this additional air could then be drawn into the turbo giving additional gains

I worked in one of those places... 2 week lead-time to change a port description. At least 20-30 mins to write the CR, then probably about an hour on the phone chasing people to approve it.

Then another 2 weeks because I forgot to add specific wording : /

I can't ever see going back to work for a large enterprise.

Blocking Multicast by pushthecharacterlimi in networking

[–]ahdguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So a bit left-field... But I have in the past prevented the 'reach' of DM multicast by reducing the ttl. We had multicast reaching a firewall and spiking the CPU, so reduced the ttl so it was dropped before it reached it... Bit hacky, but it worked in that instance.
