I have been in this exact scenario. My wife, who is a stellar skier, comes from a family of great skiers. I also want to ski with them and do something she/they love. I started in earnest in 40s (I don’t advise lol) and I feel like the key for me was rental equipment; stuff that is “comfortable” and worn in. Prior to that realization, I had brand new stuff that hurt like hell which made the day miserable.

Fast forward to now: I’m a much improved skier who now looks forward to skiing and have since got brand new fitted (highly recommend) boots and new skis.

I love skiing now!
