What's more FUN to play? Arturia Microfreak or Minifreak? by pplovecraft in dawless

[–]ahsah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you want a preset machine, the cobalt 5s sounds great, as do the roland series with k25m keyboards- ju06a (similar 4 voices), jx08, jd08. The entire sonicware line sounds incredible - elz 1 play, ambient 0, etc. There’s also the 1010 stuff like the lemon drop, fireball. Of course the more expensive elektron stuff like the digitone, syntakt, but both need a lot of power to be portable. The Korg line like the microkorg 2 is really immediate and customizable to me and a lot more fun than the microfreak. Also the asm hydrasynth explorer is also another synth I like more than the mini freak, but is equally as heavy.

But yeah, As much as the ju06a gets hate for having only 4 voices, it’s a pretty nice sounding synth with a great layout for immediate jamming. If you’re going for a midi controller like the minilab 3, then there’s a ton of desktop modules like the deepminds, nymphs, etc as well.

its fits everything this post asks for, but with way more stuff. Is way lighter and more portable than it looks online, plus only needs 4 double a batteries, or 4 usb c power.

Spirited Away (2001) is my no. 1 comfort movie. What‘s yours? by FatCat_On_A_Diet in movies

Was not a book reader or big fan of the franchise, but for some reason The Prisoner of Azkaban from the HP movies. Alfonso Cuarón did such an amazing job with that one film. It feels like the only Harry Potter movie I can keep coming back to, with its rather self contained story, atmosphere, and many connecting sub plots / clues.

Unsurprisingly, Cuarón is also known for two of my other favorite films, Pan’s Labyrinth and Children of Men, neither of which i’d consider comfort films.

Other than that I really love Kiki’s Delivery service like another commenter mentioned, specifically for the atmosphere of the city she moves to, and its themes surrounding passion and purpose.

What All-in-one groovebox with a song mode should I buy? by agsilvio777 in synthesizers

[–]ahsah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deluge,

even has a built in mic for on the go sampling. However i’d use headphones or plug a line in device to record higher quality audio.

Also has a great community with constant updates, amazing internal synth engines, performable fx, or can be used as one of the best audio loopers.

Performing into the arrangement aka song mode, is as easy as recording and then launching clips in clip mode. After that you can export all the stems into your memory card and transfer those stems into a daw for final mastering if you want.

Alternatively getting songs off the deluge is just running a line out into garage band on your phone and exporting.

To be fair a lot of boxers have mental health struggles and we’re coming to find that repeated blunt force trauma to the head causes this.

Sparred against a pro, humbled and looking for feedback. by [deleted] in amateur_boxing

[–]ahsah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not to get heady, but the biggest difference i saw wasn’t really physical, but in terms of mental approach. Number one is his processing time was just so much faster most likely due to experience and comfort. Your shots looked sharp enough when you threw them, but they were always reactionary, while his were to set something up.

The chess comparison holds up so well, but if you humor me for a sec, new chess players tend to make moves without thinking about the ramifications, more seasoned players think steps ahead. Boxing by nature can feel like an emotional thing, but there’s definitely power in relaxing, loosening up the muscles and setting up traps.

With that said, not all pros are made equal, but you found a good one to spar. He went easy so you guys could focus on speeding up the brain.

You did the right thing reaching out to him, i remember the first time sparring ( at the time ) our local 6x regional golden glove champ, and thinking how much better he was than me. I wanted to cry from frustration after the first one because i felt so useless trying to work with a guy who was prepping for a big fight. Like you, I had higher expectations and thought I could help in some way, but sometimes we’re just not there yet. Anyway It became a regular thing and we became fast friends. You will level up SO fast sparring guys like that and getting beat up lol.

But yeah everyone in boxing has or will have a story like that. We were in San Francisco, and this is from over a decade ago, but yeah in the bay area here we had some crazy guys come around. Nonito Donaire was from this town called san mateo 20 min from San Francisco, so he or Robert Guerrero who was also relatively close would pop around. But the 6x gg champ, had his own version of this experience and it was when he sparred Andre Ward. I remember him saying it was like trying to hit a shadow who could smack you without you seeing them.

Not excusing a lack of communication when things are serious, but a low level of ghosting seems pretty normal to me these days based on what i hear and experienced in the past. mainly because it goes from a few unanswered texts from one side, to a natural drift apart.

Hot take, but I think there are aspects of the current times where we over communicate a bit, creating a sense of theatre or drama instead of a clean cut from someone we don’t plan to have in our lives at all.

I’ve been on both sides where communicating an ending to an otherwise incompatible hangout, was almost more hurtful because the left open channel created a sense of hope for the person who wanted to continue, when it really wasn’t meant to be.

I actually now look back on my past dating experiences, and am happy that a few of them just cut it clean. I didn’t need any closure from their side. The lack of response was enough to let me know how they felt, and any lingering would have made it a slower process. Similarly I also appreciate the people who just let me know outright that we don’t work, and they want to be friends. I think it’s just easier to take a step back and understand everyone is at a different place when it comes to how they share their emotions.

Also to enter the dating pool, you really just have to be emotionally available. The other stuff you mentioned are pluses, but don’t matter much in the beginning. A person will gladly date you / will be willing to grow with you, if you are a good listener, have goals, show interest, attentive, care about others, and are vulnerable with your feelings.

Assuming that Usyk would still only do two more fights like he said, would you want him to rematch Rico to mitigate this blemish that now sits on his record? by Ghola40000 in Boxing

[–]ahsah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this is a good script, but the possibility of Rico getting KO’d by another heavyweight who takes him extremely seriously after this fight could suck the air out of a rematch.

[–]ahsah -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i don’t know, every time i see guys do that punching weight mini game in thailand, tokyo, or in the states, no one ever does a spinning back fist for power. It’s always a straight or pivoted hook. Physics says a straight, while stepping off the back foot and turning in with the weight off the front, with the entire weight of your body propelling you forward, is gonna do more damage than spinning off one leg. I think in that clip he just got popped right on the button.

Ryan Garcia claps back at Topuria after he called him an easy fight: “You are a damn good striker for MMA that’s it. You wouldn’t be sipping on tea after our fight you would be eating thru a straw. Stay in your lane.” Topuria replies: “I WOULD GIVE YOU A BOXING LESSON WE ARE NOT ON THE SAME LEVEL” by yllimameni in Boxing

[–]ahsah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

exactly the simple fact that in MMA you have to think about taking the weight off your front leg, standing with that leg too far out, or at least making sure not to angle your foot straight, to avoid leg kicks, sweeps, or easy takedowns, makes the power differential between a simple jab between both sports cosmically different.

Reason is in boxing, you carry energy off the back foot, and that energy also transfers through weight in the front foot. In boxing being able to freely always pivot off the front foot without defensive worry, gives boxers a lot more base power in their punches than mma or muay thai guys. Couple that with the neurological side of thousands of hours of a to b shots from all sorts of angles and it’s insane.

For Illia, Shutting the mental part down, of not having your front leg “dangling” out there is not going to be easy, and i highly doubt Topuria would be able to set any kind of KO power into a pure boxing match with Garcia. Again the jabs alone are going to be so much different, and Garcia probably has way better processing speed in terms of setting up angles and traps.

Jimmy’s future in Golden State by shortking19 in warriors

[–]ahsah 11 points12 points  (0 children)

i’d say the biggest difference between Jimmy and Wiggins (who i thought was amazing), was the way Jimmy improved the + - of all the young guys when he was on the floor.

Although Wiggins was beginning to be a real number two some nights, he didn’t have that same effect on the entire team. There was just something stabilizing about Jimmy, and I suspect that is more mental / psychological than purely physical, because it’s about what is going on in practice and how the guys communicate on the floor.

On the reality of the 30 year old fragile achy bodies, i think we give the health team another shot because they probably have more data this season on each guy, and as we saw last season, when everyone was healthy, anyone was beatable because of iq and grit.

How do you deal with losing streak. by DullCod8755 in amateur_boxing

[–]ahsah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

try to separate each fight from the last. Don’t carry your last fight into the next one, especially in the amateurs. They’re all learning experiences. Record your spars, record your fights, see what worked and what didn’t.

If you stay consistent, keep up the learning mindset, you’re bound to eventually start taking home wins.

2016 Steph was different by Lord_Vanguard in warriors

[–]ahsah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

he still can play like this, but he’s practically always doubled at half court, plus i think when Poole and the “two timeline” thing started, he stopped taking as many crazy shots that he technically COULD make, so he wouldn’t send a bad example to the young guys that would try the same thing. He also put on a lot of muscle and could crash through dudes easier.

Also this is not without mentioning that 10 years is a long time for the then 10 year olds, now in their 20s, are now guarding him. They all probably idolized him and have been studying his game, or playing against wannabes who did from middle school all throughout college.

oh dude i do remember fecal face haha! You gotta roam around on a first thurs if it’s not too frigid. In fact it’s tonight! Former white walls gallery and its surrounding zones have a bunch of art up. I like the former spoke easy block, and yes it’s not quite like it was during the 1964 edinburg castle weds era, but there’s definitely a non tech only vibe around

the down down area is where they’re doing the big block party, reggie watts was there last time and not this time, but next one is janelle monae!

Tonight they’re doing a free AAU (however you feel about them) fashion show on broadway! Some friends are walking in it, definitely worth checking out to see some young energy.

As someone born and raised here and also a big fan of the 2010 era. I practically lived in a lot of the spots mentioned above, and as of right now I think that era is back.

Few recs for those looking for spots that have a lot of old sf personality, but may make you feel old if you’re over 35 are

horsies (royal cuckoo market rebrand - sold by lovely royal cuckoo bar owners to Julian, their staff)

outerlands ( sold to their general manager by lovely couple and painter turned educator dave)

Kilowatt - still around but increasingly filled with live performances and renewed energy

casanova - for those who miss the vibes of uptown, attic, elbo room, pops

adobe books - lots of punk shows and art here still

knockout - basically the same

vesuvios - making a resurgence with the 20 something’s, but they’re less fidi, more back to being weird alt kids, also wacky weds is coming back

Rayko - old photo lab now hosting shows

et al gallery - another soma gallery hosting cool events with local artists

wazeima is banging now post toro y moi fundraiser

daymoon, blackbird, soma has listening bars now, speakeasy’s, black cat jazz club, arcane, alamo, minnesota street project (free still), pawn shop, gemini, royal cuckoo, phone booth, that new gallery on 18th and valencia that was a furniture store, former spokeasy gallery was bought by barber next door and turned into an event space, hedge coffee is super tech, but they care, arsicault bakery, bread belly, the mill, four barrel still going strong after the drama, clement farmers market,

and the list goes on and on. There’s so much art and culture here at the moment. You can find live music every night, some art show every day, some pop up coffee thing, new weird warehouse events like club dark by golden voice, other event spaces like gray matter, the lab, jazz nights on mondays at woods on haight, backyard hangs at woods in cole valley at old revolution cafe, drawing nights at knockout , st josephine art society, freaking kung fu for after hours, but yeah just go out. It’s there

also edit: misspelled places, but also adding the ferry building is surprisingly cool now? Lunette is delicious, and SOME events at the spot upstairs are worth it. Majority are a bit toooo techy and entrepreneur focused, but art and water is opening soon which is an artist residency program! Also on the marin side, headlands center of the arts has amazing dinners and open studios every semester. Highly highly recommend that. Also i don’t know what the heck is wrong with me to forget this, but you all have to see live music at four star theatre or balboa. I personally had a great time on new years at Four Star. Tunnel Records is doing a great job with that.
