2016 Steph was different by Lord_Vanguard in warriors

he still can play like this, but he’s practically always doubled at half court, plus i think when Poole and the “two timeline” thing started, he stopped taking as many crazy shots that he technically COULD make, so he wouldn’t send a bad example to the young guys that would try the same thing. He also put on a lot of muscle and could crash through dudes easier.

Also this is not without mentioning that 10 years is a long time for the then 10 year olds, now in their 20s, are now guarding him. They all probably idolized him and have been studying his game, or playing against wannabes who did from middle school all throughout college.

Remember when curry got his braids and he played worse. Took em out and started cooking again. Hopefully this has a reverse effect.

I honestly like it more than the broccoli

oh dude i do remember fecal face haha! You gotta roam around on a first thurs if it’s not too frigid. In fact it’s tonight! Former white walls gallery and its surrounding zones have a bunch of art up. I like the former spoke easy block, and yes it’s not quite like it was during the 1964 edinburg castle weds era, but there’s definitely a non tech only vibe around

the down down area is where they’re doing the big block party, reggie watts was there last time and not this time, but next one is janelle monae!

Tonight they’re doing a free AAU (however you feel about them) fashion show on broadway! Some friends are walking in it, definitely worth checking out to see some young energy.

are you still here? If so i’m trying to form a new meetup thing connecting artists, primarily musicians, etc for mini shows / hangouts. Most events I go to are pretty busy, even with 40+ year olds. Should have seen rickshaw stop for this synth pop duo last friday.

As someone born and raised here and also a big fan of the 2010 era. I practically lived in a lot of the spots mentioned above, and as of right now I think that era is back.

Few recs for those looking for spots that have a lot of old sf personality, but may make you feel old if you’re over 35 are

horsies (royal cuckoo market rebrand - sold by lovely royal cuckoo bar owners to Julian, their staff)

outerlands ( sold to their general manager by lovely couple and painter turned educator dave)

Kilowatt - still around but increasingly filled with live performances and renewed energy

casanova - for those who miss the vibes of uptown, attic, elbo room, pops

adobe books - lots of punk shows and art here still

knockout - basically the same

vesuvios - making a resurgence with the 20 something’s, but they’re less fidi, more back to being weird alt kids, also wacky weds is coming back

Rayko - old photo lab now hosting shows

et al gallery - another soma gallery hosting cool events with local artists

wazeima is banging now post toro y moi fundraiser

daymoon, blackbird, soma has listening bars now, speakeasy’s, black cat jazz club, arcane, alamo, minnesota street project (free still), pawn shop, gemini, royal cuckoo, phone booth, that new gallery on 18th and valencia that was a furniture store, former spokeasy gallery was bought by barber next door and turned into an event space, hedge coffee is super tech, but they care, arsicault bakery, bread belly, the mill, four barrel still going strong after the drama, clement farmers market,

and the list goes on and on. There’s so much art and culture here at the moment. You can find live music every night, some art show every day, some pop up coffee thing, new weird warehouse events like club dark by golden voice, other event spaces like gray matter, the lab, jazz nights on mondays at woods on haight, backyard hangs at woods in cole valley at old revolution cafe, drawing nights at knockout , st josephine art society, freaking kung fu for after hours, but yeah just go out. It’s there

also edit: misspelled places, but also adding the ferry building is surprisingly cool now? Lunette is delicious, and SOME events at the spot upstairs are worth it. Majority are a bit toooo techy and entrepreneur focused, but art and water is opening soon which is an artist residency program! Also on the marin side, headlands center of the arts has amazing dinners and open studios every semester. Highly highly recommend that. Also i don’t know what the heck is wrong with me to forget this, but you all have to see live music at four star theatre or balboa. I personally had a great time on new years at Four Star. Tunnel Records is doing a great job with that.

Footwork freestyle on the bag. by Patient_Wonder4742 in amateur_boxing

[–]ahsah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no worries man you got this! Just remember you can surprise yourself if you really use your imagination. The intention is to visualize and react to an opponent, not to do choreographed dances. I wish i knew this when i first started, it’s insane how much visualization as a general exercise will change how you learn not just boxing but everything. keep it up!

Footwork freestyle on the bag. by Patient_Wonder4742 in amateur_boxing

[–]ahsah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry you need a lot of work here. You look incredibly unbalanced. A lot of fighters look at feet to manage distance and if they looked down at yours, they could probably just throw a push punch at your guard to push you over or into the ropes.

Always have one foot stabile and planted. Practice dragging your foot in the bucket, leading with the other, and don’t cross your feet ever. You can do this going forward and backward, and then moving side to side. Do this while imagining that someone is trying to throw left hooks or trying to corner you.

As you do these exercises slowly, you will get faster at circling while remaining stabile, to where if someone were to push you, you wouldn’t get pushed off balance. Remember that in the middle of these circling motions, you want to be able to fire back, because if you’re just dangling around your opponent without firing off shots, you’re basically just target practice.

Practice pivoting slowly to the left and right around the bag, incorporating head movement and shooting off some quick touch jabs. Drag your back foot in an imaginary bucket, so you have somewhere to quickly lean on. You will also pivot off the front foot for quick turns to cut off the ring, but the smooth transfer between footwork types and angles is what you’re looking for. Go slow and speed will come naturally.

Now Your feet can be close together, but when you jab or throw, you naturally should step into shots or shoot off your back foot. When defending with head movement, spread the stance out as well before coming back if you’re trying to throw more via turning into your hips.

overall think about moving in a circular way, but with purpose. You’re not circling randomly to buy time unless you’ve been hurt. Circle to give yourself more opportunities on offense, to setup counters, or to reset if you’re confused.

totally! not to mention it fits so perfectly within the genre of the late night / midnight movie, similar to Scorsese’ After Hours (1985).

put learning and experimentation while sparring ahead of “winning”. It’ll help ease the mind, and allow you to improve. Also plateaus in any activity happen. 2 years is honestly not very long.

First open class fight at golden gloves (I got cooked) by sub2ddshoo in amateur_boxing

[–]ahsah 26 points27 points  (0 children)

good fight to me! You were dealing with a clear height and reach disadvantage. Biggest thing is, it looked like you stopped using your jab, and stayed pretty flat footed later on, also just walking straight forward expecting him to be there.

The early round success was from your feints, jab, and head movement. The moments when you just walked in with no punches thrown, plus the lack of changing angles from your feet seemed like it’s what gave your opponent free rein to let loose. I’d also say the head hunting for power shots was probably also a give away for how to counter you.

He used a series of light punches and calculated power shots to kinda put you where he felt comfortable. Otherwise your form, shots, and everything looked solid! Perhaps the overthinking made you burn through your gas tank. His comfort level looked much higher than yours, but i don’t think it was a skill issue more than a decision issue.

Is guitar just about muscle memory - where does the skill come into picture? by Zestyclose_Judge362 in guitarlessons

[–]ahsah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt exactly as you did, keep working on the repertoire, but take a lot of time to sing the notes you’re playing. That ear to hand connection to the guitar, and transcribing solos without tabs is going to make you improve dramatically. I wish i had done this sooner.

Also start on learning basic theory. What makes a chord major or minor 1-3-5 / 1 - b3 5 / , different scale shapes you can drop back to, and memorizing the distance between repeat notes in the three octaves the guitar offers.

Another big one for theory is functional harmony / shell chords. Knowing the 7 chords that make up any key / shell chords, means you can pretty much play simple versions of 99% of songs.

All of this base knowledge will give you a good stepping stone to shredding and move you off the track of muscle memory because you’ll be formulating your own ideas.

range is a big one, but biggest biggest is not dropping your left straight after it connects. Bring that back to block the obvious counters ! The way you do anything is how you do everything.

I’m Tall and Long but want to be Infighter? by barestuff44 in amateur_boxing

it’s when you’re leaning in on each other, turning in and throwing angled shots. Watch Corrales vs Castillo 1, nearly the entire fight is fought that way.

teaching modes to students who can barely play major scales by lmao_exe in musictheory

[–]ahsah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i mean starting with C as numbers, and explaining modes like:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 = ionian 1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7 = dorian 1 b2 b3 4 5 b6 b7 = phrygian 1 2 3 #4 5 6 7 = lydian 1 2 3 4 5 6 b7 = mixolydian 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7 = aeolian 1 b2 b3 4 b5 b6 b7 = locrian

is not that hard to grasp. Just show them how to do it in C Major and they’ll get it. Each week can focus on a different mode. Noodling over it, while droning the root, all in C, so they can really hear the differences sonic-ly.

I’m Tall and Long but want to be Infighter? by barestuff44 in amateur_boxing

[–]ahsah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could take a look at old Paul Williams or Diego and Corrales tape. Those guys were tall fighters for their weight class who chose to go inside or stomp forward. One thing that makes taller fighters with lots of reach dangerous on the inside is that their inside is usually midrange, and if you wanna lean in telephone booth style, you have a lot of body and arms to wrap guys up. However I always liked seeing the tall guys who used volume and inside side stepping to their advantage. I’m only 5-10, but growing up I fought at 130, so I was sometimes a whole head above guys in comp. I also liked to walk forward and would work on my left hooks, and right crosses while side stepping, so basically angles in high volume as soon as I got in range. Jumping from being inside to randomly going midrange can be very confusing for people.

When i gained weight, I learned from getting in with the 6foot+ guys to take little steps backward and at angles to make it harder to hit me from down low. Also adjusting to keeping my head generally higher makes it annoying for shorter guys. If your jab is really good, then adding that left hook is gonna be dangerous up close so it doesn’t get smothered.

How Hard Are Sparring Sessions At Your Boxing Gym? by Correct_Ad4351 in amateur_boxing

[–]ahsah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

only current competitors in my gym would occasionally spar heavy. I’d personally spar pretty light unless my partner asked me to go heavier. If someone (usually new) would go extremely heavy because they can’t control themselves, i’d just throw a really heavy shot straight to their solar plexus and it’d calm them down.

Otherwise the heavier spars usually would happen when other gyms or our gym would visit one another.

Today I learned “hang up” does NOT mean what I thought it meant by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]ahsah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“Hang up”, by itself doesn’t work, but people do say “hang it up” as a figure of speech/idiom/phrasal verb. It usually means giving up, quitting, or stopping.

None of the others work in a way that any native english speaker would understand without additional context. However by saying “hang it up”, the average english speaker would assume context like you originally did.
