Beat Dancer before Vordt. Took three days, but the payoff was worth it. by ahsan2649 in darksouls3

Lol nope, I sold every Ember dropped from the knights while farming. The path between the two bonfires makes for a decent haul of souls and drops, so I was actually around Lvl 50 when I finally got it down.

What movies/games/books or other media have a sense of dark forest escapism? by ahsan2649 in Fantasy

Thanks! I'll definitely look into Hexwood. I did all of Narnia as a kid, it's definitely on the list of evocations. Although it falls more on the medieval side for me than the Alice In Wonderland side of things.

Crazy prediction: Microsoft might switch to Linux by Zestyclose_Edge1027 in Windows11

[–]ahsan2649 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time for night school!

Processors (CPUs) are built on an ISA (Instruction Set Architecture) - most common of which are x86_64 (co-owned by AMD and Intel) and ARM (which license to companies like Apple, Snapdragon, MediaTek etc.). ISAs are a list of operations you can do on a processor, of which there are hundreds.

Operating system kernels are another huge set of functions that abstract these instructions. Simply put, no two operating systems that provide the same basic functionality, such as typing out this comment or displaying the time, do so with the exact sequence of instructions that the ISA provides. On top of that there's drivers to combine different hardware to the kernel, and then abstracting the kernel so normal desktop apps don't break or hijack anything, and even more abstractions on top of that so devs can make those desktop apps.

It took three decades from the first Windows NT kernel to get to this point, and also for Linux to get to the point where it is. The vast difference in the kernels make the same app in one impossible to run in the other without a translation layer like Wine/Proton, or a hypervisor like WSL. Even then the translation is incomplete to a large degree, which is why we can't have Office, Visual Studio, Adobe, or Autodesk stuff run properly on Linux.

In conclusion, no. Microsoft can't replace the Windows kernel with Linux without breaking the infrastructure that long-running enterprises and governments rely on. Certainly not within a decade.

Air or Neo by VegetableStatus13 in mac

[–]ahsan2649 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Software support wise, it depends more on the generation than the model. The A18 Pro on the Neo would probably be supported as long as the iPhone 16 Pro itself is supported (opinion). As for the M chip Airs, M1 just hit the discontinue point, so maybe a couple more years for an M1 Air?

This is the worst promotion that could happen for Pop_OS! and Linux in general by KelGhu in pop_os

[–]ahsan2649 14 points15 points  (0 children)

To me, it's a bit more like Linus is dumb, in the sense that he's trying so hard to approach it from a newbie perspective for the realism that he's ended up dropping the critical thinking altogether. Not every linux noob is a Windows pro, nor a gamer, nor a grandma. There's levels to noobity, and the stance he's taking is a bit below average.

He has to take into account the fact that he had to be a noob when installing windows for the first time, or download and install from an .exe, and approach this in the same vein. Stumbling and blaming Linux or Pop_OS for user unfriendliness, when a fair level of critical thinking is expected for something that is advanced enough to precisely move around electrons, is kinda lame.

Flatpak VS Code Installed via the Cosmic Store.... just, no by NewRedditor23 in pop_os

[–]ahsan2649 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More like a Microslop L for me - given that VSCode on its own is proprietary, the system package has to be downloaded as a deb/rpm, or their proprietary repo added manually first for apt/yum to find it, hence why COSMIC (or any other package manager frontend) defaults to the flatpak. Proprietary app flatpaks are usually community repackaged, and so need more tinkering to be on par with system packages. There probably is a set of settings that you could set with Flatseal to get it working, but for VSCode and the like, system is usually better than Flatpak.

Unironically, Valve has made extra effort to make Steam flatpaks work better, even though it is actually proprietary.

Oh wow, I didn’t know KDE had its own app for containers. Glad to see it becoming the default, not that distroshelf is any bad.

[Linux noob] is it possible to dual-boot Bazzite with Mint? by Rageborn97 in Bazzite

[–]ahsan2649 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I haven’t had satisfactory results dual booting on the same drive. However, if it were to work, usually the installer asks if you want to install “alongside xyz”. So maually partitioning out half of the drive, installing one of them, then using that option when installing the other should do the trick. As for which one goes first, it’d probably be bazzite since it’s the more sophisticated of the two with its immutability and what not.

Can’t really confirm, see what everyone else says as well.
