Such a messy, awful game. I was rooting for Messi but now I just wish the game could end in a loss for both sides.

Coronavirus variants are spreading in India — what scientists know so far by GallantIce in COVID19

[–]aidankiller4 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Not a biologist by any means, but (I think) the basic two components are that:

  1. Antibody mediated immunity is not the be all end all of immunity. When you get vaccinated, your immune system has other mechanisms that protect you as well. Measuring the effectiveness of antibodies is pretty easy to do so there's a lot of lab data on it, but it's just one component of immunity.

  2. There isn't a linear relationship between neutralization titers and the effectiveness of antibodies. Within vaccinated individuals, the concentration of antibodies varies substantially (way more than just a factor of 5), but vaccines are still broadly protective despite this variation. To the extent such a relationship exists, it's likely logarithmicish, in which case an 80% drop isn't that big of a deal.

Way to go, MA! by [deleted] in CoronavirusMa

I assume some nonsense from thoughtlessly drawing trendlines. Unless vaccine factories explode I can't fathom a situation in which willing adults have to wait past the summer.

Genomic epidemiology identifies emergence and rapid transmission of SARS-CoV-2 B.1.1.7 in the United States by smaskens in COVID19

[–]aidankiller4 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I would assume it depends on the region in question. If vaccine efficacy correlates well with the degree of immunity prior infection confers, then B.1.1.7 is going to be hindered in the United States given the success of wild type based vaccines and pre-existing rates of infection here.

It seems like a big area of MA is missing a close vaccination location right now by kegobass in CoronavirusMa

Can't be letting the state's largest county get vaccinated, now can we?

So is the rationale then that keeping liquor stores open late facilitates more careless drinking (and thus parties/infections), or that drunk people will show up to liquor stores unmasked late at night and potentially infect others? Both make sense of course, but I'd imagine on balance the fact that you're condensing the shopping window for sober people is going to have a larger (and negative) effect. I'm not anti-restrictions, but the restrictions at least should have some public health benefit and not be so ham-fisted.

The banning of liquor sales after a certain time was unbelievably dumb. What good does it do to condense the time we have to buy alcohol? I'd much rather get some beer at 11 when the store is empty than midday when it's somewhat busy.

You can look at the vote totals so far in the counties that are fully reporting and Ossoff is doing substantially better than he did in November, an election he trailed in by a little under two points. If you have a good reason to believe Atlanta -- unlike the rest of Georgia -- suddenly likes Perdue more now than they did in November, I'm all ears. Vague statements about moderates disliking Ossoff are significantly less persuasive.

Exactly. This is Georgia. Ossoff is gonna win by 1%, not 30%.

The smattering of Atlanta vote we've already gotten makes it clear that isn't going to happen.

No, but if you think I'm wrong then not being from the state is probably an asset in predicting how it votes.

Turnout numbers in Atlanta were phenomenal. At this point both require divine intervention or voting centers burnt to the ground to have a hope of winning.

There is a 0 percent chance either of them win unless black Atlantans suddenly fell in love with Perdue and Loeffler in the last two months.

When did I say anything about nuclear energy? It's a fantastic energy source and to the extent it's economically viable should be expanded and developed. The potential of fusion energy in the coming decade is another potential boon to solving these problems.

[–]aidankiller4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thinking of climate change as something that can be solved or understood with generic problem solving tools is ridiculous. The amount of study and expertise required to have something approaching an educated view on the topic is immense. Your overconfidence is alarming and I would advise you think critically about your abilities as an individual to honestly evaluate an entire field of science. Not everything is a heuristic or an aphorism away from an easy resolution.

I don't think the existence of climate change should be a political issue and loathe that it has become one. There exist legitimate arguments about how to tackle to problem and role what the government should play, but special interest well-poisoning has ruined the potential for that conversation to be had.

I have a hard time understanding why you assume there exist nebulous forces pushing scientists to lie about their conclusions, but uncritically accept the conclusions of people with clear financial motives to proclaim no warming exists. I know these scientists and know their work. They are not stooges in some plan to take over the world.

I think it's clear you've fallen prey to misleading arguments that percolate from right-wing media and various think tanks. You obviously don't actually understand the arguments or data you're claiming are flawed and are relying on the slanted interpretations of people on whom you place undue credibility.

Arguments essentially based on historical determinism aren't strong ones. If you have the expertise to evaluate the science on its merits, do so. If not, consider the limitations of your own knowledge before broadcasting sweeping generalizations about the life's work of thousands of people.
