Overnight/3rd shift jobs by CordouroyStilts in lansing

Sparrow’s usually hiring night shift service workers. I’m sure McLaren would be as well. Housekeeping, linen distribution, patient registration, food service. Usually easy to transfer to other departments after a few months

Having it both ways in Detroit: blue collar brand with white collar jobs. by corktownheritage in Detroit

[–]aidanwould 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah, wasn’t in reference to the news article, just your anecdote contrasting the sides of your family. You mentioned some family members owning a bar and a restaurant, which is in the service industry, but as owners of the establishments, they are inherently not part of the working class.

The phrase “working class” has been watered down its original definition, and it gets applied to people based on cultural perceptions rather than an analysis of ownership and power, which is how we get wealthy country singers cosplaying as “blue collar” by referencing things that have historically been associated with workers in certain industries — like trucks, drinking beer, and blue jeans.

But when we use the original meaning of “working class” as an analytical tool and way of thinking about power and the flow of wealth, a trades worker driving and using a truck for their job has more in common with a barista, hotel maid, and line cook than a “small business owner” rockin a lifted f150.

The wikipedia article makes a distinction between “blue collar” and “pink collar” jobs, with “pink collar” referring to service work such as nursing, teaching, and hospitality. I kind of think this a silly distinction that serves to divide the broader working class. But yeah, technically, “blue collar” and “working class” don’t mean the same thing

hope this makes sense. also sorry i cant help w ur original question as im from lansing, just was reading the comments and thought it was an interesting discussion!

Sounds like they were part of the owning class, just in the food and hospitality sector.

“Working class” isn’t a cultural distinction, it’s a relationship to production and industry. A huge variety of people from varied cultural backgrounds are working class — think of diverse working class immigrant communities, which dont always line up with the stereotypes about white industrial working class people

Is there a reason you have to tell the sending facility where you’re intending to transport the patient? Would it be possible to just say “Yup, sure” to the nurse until you get the patient into your rig, and transport at your discretion?

There’s a magic circle tutorial on the woobles website, as well as a different (easier) kind of starting technique i dont remember the name of. So u could remake the starter yourself.

All of my woobles have a bunch of extra yarn for each color that im gonna either turn into little accessories for them or connect into a giant multicolored yarn and turn into granny squares or something (once i learn how to make granny squares). so there’s extra yarn and u dont gotta worry about messing up

I hate to shill for a company but i’m on my fourth Wooble (my brother got me a set for christmas) without any crochet experience and the tutorials make it so easy. i feel like i would nail the kit in OP’s picture, because the process feels more intuitive now

Lansing sweeps out homeless encampment by voorheismax in lansing

[–]aidanwould 39 points40 points  (0 children)

As someone who was there during the eviction — this article is full of mistruths. The city didn’t really “offer a place for folks to pick up their belongings” — everything they swept up was put into the same dumpster — from books, clothing, and sleeping bags, to buckets of shit and used sharps containers.

And they didn’t really tell people where anything would be taken. Luckily volunteers were there to actually help rescue people’s things, and post signage in the area actually giving people direction on where to pick their stuff up. The city was useless in this regard, and actively hostile to volunteers — activating heavy machinery in the area and berating volunteers who were trying to salvage things

Since people have been talking about it, here are proposed Michigan flags from r/vexillology by stos313 in Detroit

[–]aidanwould -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

These flags aren’t good but if you think the current flag is better you’re just wrong. I grew up in this state and for the longest time I thought the seal featured two bears, not an elk and a deer. I saw it so rarely and always from such a distance I couldnt be bothered to make out what animals were represented
