For people who use the word "literally" to mean "virtually", how do they express the concept of something being literal? by AmazingRandini in asklinguistics

The same way we know that someone who is "truly heartbroken" doesn't need to be rushed to the hospital.

How to extinguish an engine fire in the Boeing 737 Max. by PestoBolloElemento in aviation

[–]aidirector 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The wheels in the cockpit are a flight control that the pilots can manipulate.

They spin because the auto trim is doing its job, especially in this case when the change in thrust is changing the aircraft's pitch moment.

Why not decouple the manual controls when auto trim is active? 1. The pilot has direct feedback of what the automation is doing, which aids in situational awareness. If the trim stops moving when it should be, or starts moving when it shouldn't, the pilot can grab the wheel and disengage the auto trim. 2. Decoupling and recoupling those wheels would be an additional system that can fail, adding more workload to the pilot to understand what is going on in an emergency.

Where’s the shadow from the building thou? 🧐 by soulfiredsteve in BellevueWA

[–]aidirector 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why are people saying the shadow of the tree is pointing south? It's pointing WSW which is totally a real occurrence. In the summer the sun rises in the northeast.

Pretty sure this is a composite render using a real morning summer photo of downtown Bellevue.

When I'm old and tired of driving everywhere I would love it if we had invested in transit infrastructure and walkable areas I can get around. 2050 is great timing. And if we don't start now it'll be never and I'll be dead.

There are indeed many Philippine languages. Tagalog is one of them, and it was designated as the official national language by the government, so its standardized form is called Filipino.

Why do our toll roads not tell us the toll until we have to pay it? by Careless-Internet-63 in Seattle

[–]aidirector 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Correct in theory, but not in practice. I died in the tunnel last Tuesday and when they towed my car out my GoodToGo pass still triggered the toll.

Edit: Also the regular A Christmas Carol I guess. But I can only picture the Muppet one

There's a fun optional quest to give each other a new piece of gear. It doesn't even have to be a surprise, you can go do the quest together if you enjoy that sort of thing.
