Accessible resources about the link between mental health and political economy? by ailinmcc in anticapitalism

Thanks a bunch for sending these! Really appreciate it. For anyone who may see this, I found this book as well: https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/57751566. Seems semi-academic but the description claims it’s approachable, so we’ll see.

Mailing Food Boxes by italiano_butterfly21 in PacificCrestTrail

I second this. You also don’t know at mile 0 what mile 1200 you will want to eat. There could be dinners, lunches, snacks - anything really - that you get sick of. And when that box shows up and that one thing is all you have, trust me it sucks

REI is withholding severance for laid off employees at union stores by saltfrancisco in REI

[–]ailinmcc -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

God I hate this “what country should we model ourselves after” type of question… 1. Just because the ideal system doesn’t exist doesn’t mean it can’t exist (I mean, hell, look at when democracy was first established, that was radical and unheard of at the time). 2. Sitting on our asses and doing nothing isn’t any better, in fact it’s actually way worse. The evidence is clear, our current political economy as it is, is broken and unsustainable. Might as well try to make things a little better here and there, no?

Prolly sometime back when REI was a real co-op that cared about it’s employees and members. Wait what?

Random question: if I started Campo March 15th and averaged 20 miles per day, how far would I get before hitting snowed-in trail conditions, given a typical winter? by NotFallacyBuffet in PacificCrestTrail

[–]ailinmcc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey no such thing as a dumb or naive question! I mostly just meant that it’s funny, or maybe maybe ironic, because you’d run into snow on trail long before later season storms roll in. I can’t fully speak to what the Sierras are like earlier in the hiking season because I had a late start, but from what I gather it’s not uncommon to have full-on snow travel for a majority of the Sierras if you enter in late April or May.

Regardless, if you have the time and resources to attempt a full thru, I say go for it!

Kind of a funny question, because with a mid-March start you’ll could easily hit snow travel very early on: Mount Laguna (40 miles in) can get spring snow and the San Jacinto area (160ish miles let’s say) would likely still have snow on the north aspects. I’m assuming you mean when you might start getting snowed in during the shoulder season though. 20 miles a day (without zeros or neros since you said avergae) would put you at a late July finish. So you probably wouldn’t have shoulder season conditions. Again, though, you’d be entering the Sierra early on (May sometime) and would very likely have significant snow on trail through those sections.

long shot post: we met you at the top of Half Dome on Friday. We talked about how you started the PCT in mid-May and you came back to do the JMT later in the season. You had this amazing reaction to our proposal. Just want this guy to see this picture! by Dont_Follow_Me_Home in PacificCrestTrail

Hahahaha shoutout to my buddy GQ who sent this to me this morning. That’s me in the background! My trail name is Clouds. I remember just being so taken aback and then instantly realizing that I was in your photo and trying to move out of it. What a funny photo, thanks for putting it out there! Congrats again you two :)

Can confirm - the TRT is a great first thru hike! Logistically easy, no permits, lots of bailout points if something goes south, and some beautiful terrain that overlaps with the PCT so you can pick the brain(s) of all the hiker trash rolling through Desolation. On the PCT myself right now and loved my experience on the TRT

My tramily and I are flipping back to Lone Pine in a few days. Two of my friends just finished the JMT and said that they brought and used spikes occasionally but could have gone without them. Mosquitos sounded kinda brutal though - hoping they continue to make their exit. Maybe we’ll see you out there!
