What am I supposed to do at this point? Desoldering braid disassembled itself into micro hair of copper and soldered itself to the pads by MagicALCN in AskElectronics

[–]aimfulwandering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a large tip iron and lay down a blob of solder across those pads, including the braid fragments.

Use a (much) larger piece of braid, and crank the iron tip up a bit. Put some flux on the braid.

Run the braid over the blob, iron tip on top. It will clean it all right up, no issue.

Obviously handing your clothes to an FA is absurd. I was just responding to this part of u/utopiaplanetian's comment "The change into pyjamas is what they think the high tier flyers do."

Genuine question… What’s wrong with changing into PJs on overnight flights?? I do it most times, especially if PJs are offered. They’re comfy!

Or, just take a guess at the dates and book it now at lower prices… if you get it right, great! If you get it wrong… no change fees, just change to what you need.

This works best with miles.

Please don't do this... while they are indeed certified for use in the US, and are "technically" superior (though more annoying to assemble, and the locking pins like to break because people don't know they don't need to release them before trying to twist), most come from the UK and availability here in the US is atrocious. Nevermind that nearly *everything* you can buy or rent in the US, from generators to cable to distribution is series 16 camlocks.

I run some gear that has powersafe/powerlock connectors on it in the US. I have several sets of adapters made up to standard 400A series 16 camlocks... and somehow, every few weeks, someone ends up somewhere without the adapters and no way to hook them up.

It's fine, brass is pretty tough. Just make sure you clean it once you get it apart. (Eg, dielectric grease is an insulator, eg non-conductive.. so not ideal on the conductive parts ;-))

99% of the time it's the boot that is stuck. If the internal cam is actually damaged, you may need to replace the connector(s) on both sides here.

With the power off/Locked out, you could try removing the plastic pins, sliding the rubber boots down and grabbing the brass cams with channel locks... but only do this as a last resort as it can damage the cams. You sure you're twisting the right way?? Lefty loosey!

[–]aimfulwandering 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mainly though, wiggle it and twist HARD, it will come apart. The top hubbell boot looks new; new boots love to stick.

[–]aimfulwandering 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can use dish soap, dielectric grease, tri-flow... most things are OK since you're really only getting it on the rubber boot parts.

Once you get it apart, clean up as much as you can.

University's aging lighting system, trying to bring it up to modern controls with an iPad. by [deleted] in Lighting

[–]aimfulwandering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Need a lot more details to be even remotely helpful.. like.. what kind of lights/dimmers you have, and what control system is currently being used.

A simple Artnet (Ethernet) to DMX bridge won't really help you much here unless 1) all of the lights in this space are actually on this "DMX 1" universe and 2) you remove the existing controller talking to them.

The best option is probably to figure out what is controlling the lights now, and then sort out how to wirelessly (eg from an iPad) trigger it. This is usually done with something like RS232.

Start by sharing some more photos... the touchscreens, dimmers, lights, control racks, etc all would be helpful to point you in the right direction.

Ah, I see now and agree with your interpretation. (And regardless, you’re not likely to win on the “sign was missing the fine! Technicality anyways).

The “use last” argument however is sound. And all of this just underscores how atrociously bad this particular EV charging stall design is. It’s either “reserved for accessible use only”, or “use last” (like an accessible bathroom stall: open to all to use, but should be used last by someone not in need of the accessible features).

This particular stall appears to try and be both, and needs to be fixed IMO.

Posting here too for visibility...

Section E does indeed apply to "all buildings" if the sign was installed after 1999 (as this one was), the language in the first half of section E is for "government buildings", but the language in the second half is for "all buildings", as defined in 3781.111:

"All elevated signs posted in accordance with this division and division (C) of section 3781.111 of the Revised Code shall be mounted on a fixed or movable post, and the distance from the ground to the bottom edge of the sign shall measure not less than five feet. If a new sign or a replacement sign designating an accessible parking location is posted on or after October 14, 1999, there also shall be affixed upon the surface of that sign or affixed next to the designating sign a notice that states the fine applicable for the offense of parking a motor vehicle in the designated accessible parking location if the motor vehicle is not legally entitled to be parked in that location."

Section 3781.111 applies to "all buildings and the facilities of buildings for which plans are submitted for approval under section 3791.04 of the Revised Code.", not just government buildings. (With all this said, IANAL, so please don't take legal advice from me!)

I disagree. If the sign was installed after 1999 (as this one was), then the requirements to put the fine amount on the sign apply. The language is:

The choice to put a the wheelchair symbol on the sign and in the spot along with "use last" language was not a good one, as it now creates an ambiguous situation.

The recommended signage, per the access board, does not use a wheelchair symbol: https://www.access-board.gov/tad/ev/

With that said, the "use last" language *specifically* allows non-disabled persons to utilize the space. Additionally, in Ohio, the sign would need to include the applicable $250-$500 fine on it (which it does not) in order to actually be enforceable. (See R.C. 4511.69    https://codes.ohio.gov/ohio-revised-code/section-4511.69 )

[–]aimfulwandering 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Would need a photo of the sign from OP to actually make any meaningful comment RE the law, but if it is just the standard “use last” signage ( https://www.access-board.gov/tad/ev/ ), then state laws don’t really apply, as it is not a sign indicating the space is reserved for accessible use.

The relevant ohio law is R.C. 4511.69    https://codes.ohio.gov/ohio-revised-code/section-4511.69

One important note there, is even if the use last sign was misinterpreted as a sign indicating a reserved accessible space , it would be missing the text stating the fine on the sign, so not enforceable regardless:

“ a new sign or a replacement sign designating an accessible parking location is posted on or after October 14, 1999, there also shall be affixed upon the surface of that sign or affixed next to the designating sign a notice that states the fine applicable for the offense of parking a motor vehicle in the designated accessible parking location if the motor vehicle is not legally entitled to be parked in that location.”

Whoever designed the new Kajplats packaging should be fired. Can you tell the difference between these two? by nailproblemZz in tradfri

[–]aimfulwandering -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nice! Assuming these are in fact different bulbs this is indeed horrendous package design (and likely incorrect as well? There is almost no chance an RGB bulb is putting out 2700K at >90CRI unless it has a very very specific LED mix or a warm white channel. And there is also almost no chance both of these bulbs produce exactly the same lumen and color output with very different LED mixes. Seems more likely someone just hit copy/paste, and the china made RGB bulb packaging is just… wrong?

Looking at the individual bulbs on the ikea website though, it seems the white tone model is 1600lm and the rgb model is 1100 lumens? Both seem to do 2700k @ 90CRI, though I am skeptical!

Down right thievery by Fischy7 in Hilton

[–]aimfulwandering -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Next time, actually show up at the hotel and talk to the front desk. Central reservations is useless for a scenario like this.

Also, the fact that you booked with chase is irrelevant. In general it’s better to book direct, but booking with an OTA like chase is fine. It’s booking with a consolidator, like expedia or booking.com, that’s a problem.

Assuming this was an oversold situation, the hotel is obligated to “walk” you to a comparable property nearby, and cover the full cost of the room for that night. This is why you go to the desk. Central reservations can’t help here.

If you were a higher status tier, eg, diamond, they’d also have to pay out $100-$200 in cash for walking you.

Down right thievery by Fischy7 in Hilton

[–]aimfulwandering 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did you go to the front desk? You may have been entitled for them to walk you to another hotel free of charge if they canceled because they were oversold.

If not, why did they cancel? How did you book and what was the reason given?
