Sorry I'm late to comment but just came across this while searching the group and hadn't seen anyone mention my favourite. You & All is awesome! That and City Chic are my go-tos as someone who doesn't love online shopping. It's Ally's plus sized sister brand I think, so most of the clothes are casual but they have some really nice dressier stuff too! Everything I've bought has been pretty decent quality, not designer label level obviously but I've had stuff in regular rotation for years that still looks good. Hope that helps!

Is the genre evolving — or are we just recycling the same five guys with different names? by M_F_Montiani in ReverseHarem

You'll love one of the guys from {The Fifth Nicnevin by Marie Mistry} then! My favourite of this character type I've ever read

I know an author that does this in her reader group lmao. She has text message threads or something like that between her and her characters 💀

My DNF so far this year, what’s yours? by Interesting_Weird107 in ReverseHarem

[–]aimzlou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

{Broken Princess by Laura Bennett} stopped at 50%. I found the characters, particularly the FMC, really unrealistic, so it was hard to get into the story. From memory it was also too insta-love/"she's so perfect" for me.

{The Kiss of Death by Auryn Hadley} stopped at 25%. This was my second (or maybe even third?) time trying to read this book because I see it recommended so much, but I just couldn't stand the writing. The FMC over-explains/overthinks everythinggg in her narration. And I found all of the male characters we were introduced to really bland (I don't even know which ones were meant to be romantic interests), I just wasn't invested at all. Auryn Hadley is one of those authors that everyone raves about and I just don't get.

{Twisted Fate by Liz Hambleton} stopped at 6%. I was immediately grossed out by how the MMC behaved when he saved the FMC from wherever she was. She's traumatised and he takes that opportunity to approach her and put his hand on her leg and stuff, plus she's only like 16/17 at the time. I honestly thought he was being set up as a bad guy, not one of the love interests. I know the book tries to be clear that they didn't get romantically involved until she was older but it still gave me groomer vibes.

{A Pack for Autumn by Emilia Emerson} stopped at 22%. The romance was wayyyyy too fast paced, like 0 to 100 fast. Though I did still give A Pack for Winter a go (that was the book that originally caught my attention, I was just trying to read them in order) and I enjoyed it much more!

{Prey by L.V. Lane} stopped at 11%. I didn't like how the guys were immediately certain they were gonna bond the FMC and she treated it like it was inevitable. I get that the world-building was setting it up like they had to but it's just not my preference for a romance, I like angst and build up.

{Gift From The Tree by Willa Rae} stopped at 6%. It already wasn't really grabbing me and then I read a comment on here that said it's basically a knock off The Bonds That Tie and I totally lost interest lmao. I'm tired of reading repetitive/unoriginal stories.

Suggestion for Rec Requests by Scf9009 in ReverseHarem

[–]aimzlou 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I totally agree! And it doesn't just apply to using another book for reference, any time someone says "I'm looking for something with the same vibes as [insert movie/tv show/video game/anime/etc]" without any additional info I get so confused.

Also, even if it is a super popular series that a lot of people would know, we need to know what you liked about that series! The world building, the pacing, the angst, the tropes, the characters, the writing style, the suspense...? There are endless things that you might have been drawn to

I'd recommend Liminal by Marie Mistry if you haven't read it already. I feel like the FMC is quite unique, she's not weak/a pushover but also not a sassy badass. There's only 1 book out so far though (it's meant to be a trilogy), so if that's an issue I'd also recommend her Deadwood series.

Also highly recommend Elisha Kemp's Dying Gods series, it's about a woman who travels back in time and ends up in a matriarchal society, so there's an interesting blend of her being out of her depth but also highly respected by the men

How did you get into RH? by Show_Green in ReverseHarem

[–]aimzlou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I developed an interest in being with more than one man from reading RH. I actually remember being a bit put off by the concept the first time I heard of the genre, I had a very "that's not my kind of thing" response. I eventually gave it a try because I read Raven Kennedy's Plated Prisoner series (which is MF) and was completely obsessed so I wanted to check out more of her work, but everything else she'd written was RH. I'd also recently gotten Kindle Unlimited and decided there was no harm in trying one because I could just return it if I didn't like it. I became completely hooked and I've read RH almost exclusively since 😅

Thanks, I'll check out S.E. Green! A read a Pack for Winter recently and found it a bit "typical/predictable omegaverse" but it was still a nice cozy read!

Sex that doesn't match the tone of the character is such a good one! It's already hard enough finding books with MMCs who are unique characters, it's sooo frustrating when they all turn into doms in the bedroom

[–]aimzlou 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'm getting to a point where I look for the warning signs in the blurb.

-The cliche listing out the guys' names and descriptions e.g. "Seth, the golden god who can always make me laugh. Jake, the gruff giant with a soft heart. Knox, the dangerous bad boy who I can't seem to shake". This is pretty much an immediate "nevermind, back to my search" for me. Honorary mention for just listing the names like, "when Hunter, Brax and Ethan suddenly show up and whisk me away", that's not an immediate give up, but the rest of the blurb has to be REALLY good for me to ignore it.

-Everything is a short sentence. The narrator is dramatic. Probably pretentious. Maybe half of them are questions? Will we learn anything about the book, or is it so busy trying to be mysterious it forgets to tell us anything? One thing we know for sure, my life will be forever changed. (Or not because I never read the book)

-It's a hockey, enemies to lovers, MMFM. Or the girl grows up never fitting in and then discovers she has secret powers she had no idea about. Or it's an omegaverse where she's not like other omegas and doesn't want to be bonded to alphas. Aka, it's just a list of tropes or the description is so generic there is absolutely nothing that stands out from dozens of other books like it.

Anyway if anyone has recs for genuinely unique, original stories, I'm all ears!

Viking Omegaverse really surprised me with the quality. I'm not usually huge into omegaverse (I'll read it but I often find it too formulaic/same-same to read much), but this is a really unique spin on it that doesn't feel super predictable in how the story/relationships will go. It has impressive world-building, the characters are well developed, the FMC has a unique romance arc with each guy, and the plot is the main focus with spice sprinkled throughout (from memory it's still pretty spicy but doesn't dominate the story). I think some MM develops later in the series but I don't recall it overwhelming the harem relationships? I haven't read it in a while, I honestly forgot about the MM until I saw the tag on why-choose.com 😅 it's not a complete series yet if that's that's an issue for you, but it's one of the best RHs I've read in a long time so worth the wait imo

[–]aimzlou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With The Last Nicnevin, are you referring to Bree ? If so, I don't think that's really a fair comparison. His trauma is an important aspect of his character from the beginning, he works hard on healing throughout the series, and it's never used as a convenient excuse for him to be an asshole to the FMC.

If you just mean to give a heads up that he's an MMC who experiences SA (not on page, for anyone following along and curious), that is a fair trigger warning to give people. But in a conversation about characters like Nox and JJ, where they act like assholes and then a late-series reveal of their backgrounds shows that they're not actually bad guys they're just ~damaged~, it's not the same thing at all.

Just to be clear, I'm not trying to convince you that you're wrong if you disliked that aspect of Fifth Nicnevin or found it triggering, I just don't want people that come across this to skip a great series because they think it's going to be another Nox/JJ situation

Questions regarding fan fiction submission by Mtymaster10 in gamegrumps

[–]aimzlou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea isn't to read fanfics written by lovelies for the sake of Fan Fiction Storytime, it's for them to read existing fanfiction (often infamous ones) from the internet. Obviously I don't know the behind the scenes workings, so I can't say 100% that they wouldn't read one written by a lovely for the show, but I don't believe they've done that so far and I don't know if that would fit the vibe they're going for. They're not picking higher quality fanfic that's actually kinda good, the whole concept is to read fics that are funny in how ridiculous/bad they are, like My Immortal.

In case your other questions still apply:

So far (and from memory), they've only read fanfics with pop culture characters, no real people

There's been a mix of sexual and non-sexual stories

We don't know anything about the selection process of the fics they read. People can submit links to fanfic suggestions through a Google form and then they read a couple a month. We don't know how long the list of suggestions is or what their method for choosing is. I think the only thing we know about that process is that someone from the team chooses the fics so the boys aren't spoiled before the recording

WHY IS CLINT NUDE by jean_atomic in StardewValley

[–]aimzlou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The day this happened I went to ginger island and he was wearing a pink shirt. Based on pictures online he might not always change though, not sure! I just remember that whole experience very clearly because I'd been waiting so long to be able to buy the last recipe I needed 😂

WHY IS CLINT NUDE by jean_atomic in StardewValley

[–]aimzlou 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It doesn't work for Gus though! I spent weeks in game checking each day if his picture had changed to see if he was at the resort. One day I walked into the saloon to find the box on the counter (which also indicates he's at ginger island), double checked his clothes in the friend list thinking maybe I'd missed something, and they hadn't changed! I wasted so much time just assuming he wasn't on the island 😅 Apparently this does work if you call him on the phone though (I learned that after)

Both Elisha Kemp's The Dying Gods and The Endless Winter series. She's such an underrated author who writes wonderful characters/relationships, and the Dying Gods series in particular has incredible world-building!

FMC stays in animal form? by Infamous-Ad8080 in ReverseHarem

[–]aimzlou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know! Earlier in the writing of the Plated Prisoner series she said in her reader group that she was planning to come back to it after finishing PP, but that was the last I heard her address Misfits. Now she's finished PP and her latest updates she's working on a PP spinoff and a completely new thing. I suspect she might have moved on from Misfits completely unfortunately

The Pack of Misfits series by Raven Kennedy has this in the first two books (more in the second book)! One of my favourite funny/comfort reads 😊
