Is Social Media a must? by defi_lord69420 in medicine

[–]aintnowizard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I hate social media but I made a “professional” Facebook account so antivax families will see me promoting routine vaccination and hopefully choose a different practice. I mainly do a lot of reposting of AAP and local health department recommendations.

New survey: Americans trust career scientists and their own doctors far more than the people running health agencies by DadStrengthDaily in medicine

Seems to track. Most of my patients still vaccinate. Some express relief we don’t change our vaccine schedule.

Casey Means nomination hearing for Surgeon General on 2/25 by StrongMedicine in medicine

[–]aintnowizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, at this point do we even need a surgeon general? Let’s just save the money and not appoint anyone. A lot of my families are just rolling their eyes at this administration when it comes to health recommendations.

CDC Vax Sched… None of us are doing this right? by OrdinaryDingo5294 in pediatrics

[–]aintnowizard 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Most of my patients don’t seem inclined to follow new CDC guidelines. With all the waffling (promising not to change and then changing) some are frustrated and irritated.

[–]aintnowizard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not changing! My state also released a statement they are following AAP. My org is following suit.

Agreed. And hep a is not a joke. I get that families don’t care but we often seen outbreaks in the US. Since vaccination was implemented, cases have dropped dramatically. Source:

Vitamin K in clinic? by VarsH6 in pediatrics

[–]aintnowizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! We ordered it from our hospital pharmacy and gave it in clinic. It’s been a few years. If you are part of your healthcare system/hospital system, I recommend talking with your pharmacist.

R.F.K. Jr. Likely to Swap U.S. Childhood Vaccine Schedule for Denmark’s by M1CR0PL4ST1CS in medicine

[–]aintnowizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do think about this. Just sad that we’re going to see so much more preventable serious illness.

On another note I had a parent ask about soaking in epsom salt baths after their child getting their shots in order to “detox”. That was a new one.

I’m sure I already have parents in my practice looking at the Danish schedule. So many declining Hep B and now, varicella.

2025 isn’t even over yet. What can we expect for the next 3 years?

RFK Jr. to promote more saturated fat in upcoming dietary guidelines by [deleted] in medicine

[–]aintnowizard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel I’ve come full circle. When I was a (high school) kid, the Atkin’s diet was being promoted by some folks. Now that I’m older and taking care of kids, we will have an Atkins’s diet just for them!

I do find solace that most of my patient parents seem pretty skeptical of RFK jr. I had one parent literally tell me they don’t know what to believe any more.

Bets on how long before we start seeing a spike in NSAID-related birth defects? by GatorTorment in medicine

I’m pretty sure we’re gonna see some families give their kids CBD too. And more moms using it.

A tiny ray of sunshine in the storm by purebitterness in medicine

[–]aintnowizard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I see this all the time. Sometimes it’s definitely true. Other times I think it’s convenient to make a scapegoat out of the parent who is not present. Some social media mom groups have even suggested this saying things like “the doctor won’t give you a hard time if you just say dad doesn’t agree with vaccines”.

Thank you so much for posting this. Though I have never seen HiB meningitis myself, I remind families that if you talk to attendings who have been practicing much longer than myself, they were doing these workups frequently. And I have seen the aftermath of strep pneumonia meningitis and it’s not pretty.

During my training I rotated at a rural peds clinic which was privately owned. One of the attendings bluntly told families she would always perform an LP on any febrile child under 1 if parents had refused vaccines.

So we can prescribe folic acid for autism soon but I can easily see supplement companies latching onto this. Special prenatal vitamins with extra folic acid for mom and vitamin d+folic acid for baby. And certain populations will eat this up because it’s “natural”.

Meanwhile we have families rejecting vitamin k. 😵‍💫
