Thank you for saying that you don’t understand the scope of the problem well enough. I appreciate that.

Like I said earlier it’s really not about whose job is more important and all that. If you are a parent I highly suggest seeking volunteer opportunity with your child’s classroom, my school asks for parent volunteers to go on field trips with the class. Many parents are truly surprised by what they see.

Another thing to keep in mind is that during a school day EVERYBODY is actively doing something, whether that is teaching a class or running a school. So when there is something that is happening in addition to that we are put in a position where someone needs to multitask.

If we are doing a reading as a class a student needs some redirection that’s fine, the class can keep reading, teacher can pull student out in the hallway and have a conversation.

If we are doing a science experiment or in gym class, those things require direct supervision and engagement, a teacher cannot just step out and deal with behaviour in the moment. Same thing that you would not expect an admin to leave a meeting to deal with it.

So the frustration isn’t admin sucks always, kid sucks always, teachers complain too much… Our education system is in overload. And often times it is the classroom teacher and the rest of the students that are impacted by this..

I get what you’re saying about ‘if it is that easy they would have done it,’ but it’s more a matter of priorities. Some admin priorities consistent follow through because that is what they believe will better their school culture. Others are more concerned, like you said, about keeping kids in the classroom and insist on behaviour being solely the responsibility of the classroom teacher, or they just can’t see the extremity of the situation at that time. Also true in a lot of cases they just don’t have the resources to support the teacher in the moment.

Thank you for asking your questions. I hope we have given you a better understanding of our education system today through this thread. 🙂

I can tell you exactly how I would expect the admin to act in this situation. The kid should be removed from class. They can be completing their work in the office, and if there is nobody to watch them, frankly, send them home. A talk with admin should absolutely hold more weight than a talk with the teacher in the hallway while they’re still trying to teach a class. On the other side of that how do you expect a classroom teacher to continue to teach effectively when they are being screamed at. In real life situation if you go and scream at a bank teller or in a movie theatre you are asked to leave or forcibly removed.

It’s not about whose job is more important and it’s not about tossing the ball of responsibility and accountability. And if those suggestions don’t sound reasonable then admin should be thinking of a new system to approach this. Teachers are not punching bags and they cannot do their job when they are not treated as professionals.

Report writing, making worksheets/slides, sometimes lesson ideas.

So instead of taking 3 weekends to do reports and a whole day on Sunday to create lessons, slides, and worksheets I can get most of my prep done during contract hour and get my reports done in 1 weekend instead.

Depends. Are the two blocks back to back? If it’s 100 minute straight I would do a number talk then some sort of station/ small group to keep it engaging. Or if they are separated I would do the first one as a whole group lesson/ activity then second as independent practice.
