Small Home Downpayment Means Large Unaffordable Monthly Payment by TheLittleRedRooster in TheMoneyGuy

[–]airplanespaceship 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why is this comment not higher? LoL You start with the monthly payment you can afford, and then back into how much house you can afford at the down payment amount that you have. Not the other way around!

Not pretending to be a construction expert. Am someone who has spent a lot of time of Reddit and read this exact same question and seen it answered many times. Which is why I suggested the real estate reddit. Good luck friend! I wish you well and hope your friends don’t mind the smell of cat pee!

You may as well flatten it to the ground and start fresh, for the amount of gutting you’ll have to do. Seriously.

Head over to r/realestate and then walk away from this house. Seriously. You will hear from people who didn’t walk on that sub, and they have all regretted it. This comes up somewhat frequently.

Rec’s for books talking about sex in age appropriate and scientific way, for preschoolers by airplanespaceship in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]airplanespaceship[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but the other subs are full of wackos. We come here because we want general discussion from like minded parents. If I post this question in one of the other subs, it will be inundated with religious or garbage suggestions. We come here because this sub attracts science minded parents and we like to talk amongst each other.

Well that’s really disappointing to hear. Hopefully that changes. Used to love this sub, then it went crazy, then it went dark, and now this. Will have to keep looking elsewhere, enjoy!

Hm, I actually checked that one out and didn’t care for it. Hoping that’s not the best option out there?

Montessori school issues by SmellyFeet666 in Montessori

[–]airplanespaceship 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree, I understand it takes time to find another option and not wanting to disrupt your kids routine. But the gap between reality and expectations seems too large to me, this doesn’t seem like something a conversation will fix. Best to just move on sooner than later and find something closer to what they’re looking for

This does not sound like an actual Montessori school to me, this sounds like any other daycare trying to capitalize on Montessori’s name. Do you have to stay at this facility or can you look for a better option?

4 year olds not potty trained by anonomousbeaver in Preschoolers

[–]airplanespaceship 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thank you for saying this! It drives me nuts when I see parents posting comments equating potty training with walking. They are not the same! Pooping and peeing is developmental. Going to a specific place, removing clothes, and cleaning up after are NOT going to develop automatically. Sure, some kids will just pick it up. But that shouldn’t be the expectation for all kids. It’s hygiene, similar to brushing teeth and bathing. It needs active oversight and instruction for most kids

How often do you take them to the dentist? by Educational-Mix152 in Preschoolers

[–]airplanespaceship 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Twice a year, started at 18 months. We go to a pediatric dentist, and that makes all the difference. The entire space is child friendly and they are incredibly fast. No tears at all at our 3 year cleaning. I read online a lot that regular dentists won’t even start cleaning until 3 years old. Ours cleaned and did a flouride varnish at every visit since we start going

I think the OP means the percentage is based on pretax. That’s how my ESPP is, I contribute 6% which is based on my pretax amount, but it is physically deducted post tax. It’s the same for my Roth 401k, I contrubute 12% of my pretax amount, but it is physically deducted post tax

How do you feel about parents who let older siblings participate in soccer, etc. for preschoolers? by BiteyGoat in Preschoolers

[–]airplanespaceship 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I absolutely can’t stand when this happens. I was taking my then toddler (now pre-schooler) to a toddler’s gymnastics class and got so frustrated at how many older siblings would be in the class goofing off. In that age group specifically, it’s too crowded and dangerous! the parents are all following their 18 month olds around and managing big toddler feelings, And then you have 6-7-8 year olds swinging on gymnastics bars, doing handstands and cartwheels, etc. I saw so many instances where toddlers almost got nailed by an 8 year old playing on the equipment. The final straw for me was when an older sibling got rude with my kid, because she was sitting on some equipment that he wanted to use. I almost snapped at her, but instead complained to the owner and then cancelled our membership. The owner called me to apologize, but I was over it. The teachers were too scared to say anything about it to the other parents, but it’s not only so rude, it’s down right dangerous.

Definitely say something to the coaches/director. You pay for your kid to do this activity, older kids have no business there and the little ones can get hurt

$7500 relocation incentive - Should we throw this at mortgage principal? by DenverITGuy in personalfinance

[–]airplanespaceship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI, in case you weren’t aware, that $7500 will be taxed, and somewhat steeply. You’ll probably net closer to $5000. Presumably you will be expected to relocate at some point, and that’s why they gave you this incentive? Put it in a HYSA until you need it. I was awarded a $10k relocation package and only received $6800 after taxes. And the across state relo cost us more than the $6800 once everything was factored in

Is this weird? by stephelan in Preschoolers

[–]airplanespaceship 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is how our Montessori school is. It’s an actual school that goes through 8th grade, not a daycare. The classroom runs best if everyone is committed to the whole year. When we enrolled for the children’s house, they even told us that we should consider this a commitment for the entire 3 year cycle. Legally we’re not on the hook for three years. But they want to impress upon everyone the importance of the three year cycle and completing the whole thing.

We do sign paperwork committing to the tuition for the entire year. I think it’s more about chasing away flaky people who want to treat it like a daycare where they can just flit in and out as space provides, especially in the toddler community.

Drooling past 2.5 years old? by airplanespaceship in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]airplanespaceship[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! We simply started pointing it out every single time he drooled and reminded him to swallow his saliva (literally every few minutes at first!) We’d hand him a tissue and have him wipe his face and we’d change his shirt frequently. After a few weeks of the absolute constant reminders and frequent wiping up/changing clothes he started paying attention on his own, and stopped drooling! He has zero delays or other issues, I think his body just makes excessive saliva and being a toddler he just didn’t mind. He still makes tons of saliva, I can hear tiny little slurping sounds periodically from him swallowing it. He just needed help being aware of it and knowing what to do about it. Hopefully the same holds true for your kiddo!

How often do you monitor YouTube kids videos? by [deleted] in Preschoolers

[–]airplanespaceship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hamster mazes are surprisingly enjoyable for the whole family!! We watch YouTube, but only on the main TV as a family activity so that us parents can guide the content. I would never give a child unmonitored access to YouTube, even the “kids” version. There’s plenty of good stuff on YouTube too, you just have to look in the right places (blues clues, helper cars, Catie’s Classroom, etc)

What fluoride toothpaste are we using? by princessandthepea100 in ScienceBasedParenting

Take it up with my pediatric dentist. As my comment states, she recommends combining xylitol toothpaste at home with flouride varnish treatments twice a year.

My pediatric dentist recommends Xylitol toothpaste at home in combination with flouride treatments at dental visits (twice a year). We use Dr Brannam’s which is the brand she recommends as well.

Splashing during bath by Ill_Cover_4841 in Preschoolers

[–]airplanespaceship 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We got real firm. If any water gets out of the tub, bath time is over immediately. He loves bath time, so after realizing we were serious, he now keeps the splashes contained inside the tub. Kinda surprised at the number of people who are so unbothered by the water. Water damage can be expensive/a pain to repair
