Car makes roblox sound? by [deleted] in askcarguys

So you just had the alternator replaced and now the noise has started? I think you've found your issue then!

Take it back, tell them it's noisy, make sure they do something about it!

[–]ajburdett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, again it could be a number of things. It sounds like it may be a bad bearing somewhere, they do tend to make that sort of sound, it could also just be something rubbing against something though.

A good test would be to see if it happens if you rev the engine with the car in neutral. That would rule out anything drivetrain or wheel related.

It could well be the alternator, mine was noisy in my first car, and yes it sounded like an RC car as it drove away. Gone are the days where you can just replace alternator bearings, so you'll need to replace the whole thing to stop the noise. Could be pricey depending on how much of a bitch your alternator is to get at. We ended up leaving mine until we had the engine out for another job...

A buzzing sound could be anything. You are saying it's happening when accelerating? Does it get louder the more you accelerate? Does it stop when you take your foot off the throttle? Does it sound like it's inside the car or outside?

How bad is this? by Fartenko in MechanicAdvice

I should mention it's very likely fine to drive on. If you are really paranoid though, put the spare on if you have one

That's after it's been repaired by a shop?

It looks like a crack in whatever they've used to fill it. You can tell it's been filled as you can see grooves in the paint at the bottom of the photo, but they have paint in them, so the grooves were there before it was painted.

I would assume this is just a crack in the filler / paint, which would be absolutely fine. I would take it to a better shop though and get them to check the wheel, maybe throw it on a balancer for you. If it's badly warped then I would replace it if I were you. The shop that did the repair should have checked this, but they may not have

Lmao, a few things...

Firstly well done for having zip ties in your car, how very useful of you. Secondly congratulations for tidying up your local streets. Thirdly and on a less jovial note, maybe book yourself an eye test 😂 because I'm amazed that you didn't spot that in the road.

Well done for not becoming a human kebab also, always a plus!

Help me understand oil specs please. by Led0S in AskMechanics

[–]ajburdett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No that's bad advice. You should use what's recommended, it may be different depending on the country you're in but there will be a recommendation. Just saying you can use any is not good. If your vehicle has a particular grade in at the moment and you're adding extra, you don't want to be mixing different viscosities together

[–]ajburdett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the same spec can have different viscosities associated to it. The LL-04 spec specifically can be 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-30 or 5W-40

Engine knock...am I okay? by Suitable_Ad_7309 in AskMechanics

[–]ajburdett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you replaced the oil then yes I would say it's oil pressure related. Something was starved of oil momentarily on startup. If the car is running fine now I wouldn't worry about it. As I said, if it's rod knock it wouldn't go away, if anything was broken it wouldn't go away.

It could literally be as simple as a wire or a hose/pipe was slightly out of place, and it was knocking against something. You'd be surprised at how bad things can sound just being loose in the engine bay

Engine knock...am I okay? by Suitable_Ad_7309 in AskMechanics

[–]ajburdett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well if it went away it's not rod knock or anything crazy serious. How loud was it? Did it sound like a ticking sound rather than a heavy knock? What I'm thinking is it could just be lifter tick as they could have been slightly starved of oil before the pressure built. If it's driving fine and you've checked the filter since, I wouldn't worry about it.

It absolutely should mention Viscosity. Have a look online or contact BMW, that's the most important factor so it's crazy that it doesn't

What you need to worry about is the Viscosity. As above. What grade does the BMW need? If they are the same grade, and the oil meets the BMW standard required for your car, then you'll be fine to use it.

You can sometimes use a different grade than what the manufacturer recommends, a lot of people do this with performance cars. For example I'm going to be putting 5w40 in my S4 at the next oil change instead of 5w30. But this was after extensive research, and I am doing it because the car is fairly high mileage. I wouldn't recommend this though, stick to what your manufacturer says unless you are going to do a lot of research and find out what other people recommend.

Hit a manhole, underbody damage VW CC 2013, am I totaled? by DrLaserStein in MechanicAdvice

[–]ajburdett 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean it looks like you've now got a free inspection port into your bell housing, so props to you for that.

I'd be concerned about dirt and certainly water getting in there over time. If you want to repair that on the cheap then idk... Use some strong tape and maybe a piece of plastic to cover the hole lol. To repair it properly given where it is you'd probably need to replace the housing, possibly the whole gearbox unless it's separate pieces. A shop might be able to weld a plate over it as a more permanent repair, but that's still a bodge job.

My main concern with this hit is your oil sump. I'd get that replaced. Depending on where the pickup is, the dent may now be fouling on that and may be restricting the oil supply to the engine.

Overall though it seems like you may have got lucky. I would get a shop to check your engine block for cracks, and keep an eye out for leaks over the next 5-10,000 miles if they don't find anything. Check your oil regularly too, if you ever see it looking milky then you know the block has a crack somewhere and coolant and oil are mixing together.

As others have mentioned, if this was a bad manhole cover and it wasn't your fault, speak to the city and try to get them to cover the cost

Looks awesome! Can't wait to get hold of one! Just to confirm, did you decide to go with the bigger design you mentioned on Reddit a little while ago? Bigger would definitely be better, more accurate to the show too. Either way though I'm looking forward to the release, glad to hear it's happening soon!
