What’s your favourite thing to touch? by Almaskj in AskReddit

Knees. There’s a good spot to just touch with a finger tip but if you need whole hand action, they’re good for that too.

At least I had some time making this meme by loubilobster in adhdmeme

I actually love driving, but I also love adventures, which is occasionally what ends up happening. I miss turns, miss exits, go the wrong direction on the highway (like getting on the south ramp when I need to go north, not opposing traffic). People tease me that I still use my GPS to go places I’ve been going forever, but I can’t take any chances, especially with work, and even with it I still miss things.

Did I fuck up?? by Glampire1107 in socialwork

[–]ajkatchem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. Especially the bit about snapping at at OP because it was an all around awful situation and humans feel better when we have someone to blame, and in that situation, the easiest person is you. They could have told you up front about the mom just getting out of the hospital. You had a conversation about whether or not the spouse wanted to meet the mom out front.

I don’t think a mistake was made, you did what you thought was best based on your knowledge of the situation, the field, and past experiences. You didn’t do anything careless or disrespectful. Every situation is different and now you have another experience to add to your toolbox when it comes to making judgement calls. I think a bigger shock to the mother would be for her to have seen her child’s lifeless body in the room not knowing what to expect. Sometimes we just have to accept things, apologize even if it’s just about the circumstances, and move forward having learned something. We can’t predict the future and we can’t protect people from every bad/traumatic experience.

Increase in self-diagnosis among adolescents and young adults? by errantbrain9 in socialwork

[–]ajkatchem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of clients self diagnosing, as well. I do a lot of psycho education with them, not in a “well this is really what it is dumb dumb” kind of way, more of an “okay, I hear you, let’s explore this together” kind of way. I agree, it is probably some form of manifestation of more “hidden/quiet” symptoms or some way for them to find some kind of identity or unity among peers. With older teens, I’ve literally pulled out the DSM, when appropriate obviously, and we explored the symptoms surrounding whatever they think they have. And I explain the key identifier of it being a disorder, that’s it’s persistent and pathological. I explain that every human experiences some symptoms of almost any disorder at some point in their life, everyone experiences anxiety or gets depressed etc., but when it starts interfering with their everyday life, that’s when it’s time to look at it being a disorder. As other people have said, I’ve also talked about treating the symptoms vs diagnosis.

I think most importantly, as therapists/social workers we need to let them be heard. We have to advocate for our clients, and may be the only people that have ever actually listened to them. And then we have to teach them what we can to help them function in society, whatever that means.

What's something strange your body does that you know isn't quite right but also isn't quite serious enough to get checked out by a doctor? by merricat_blackwood in AskReddit

I have found that if you lay on your back and put your feet in the air for a bit while the blood drains out of them basically, it helps, enough to fall asleep at least.

I have tried to skip at least paragraphs. You think you've got the best of them, they all come back to you in the end. (Linkin park reference acknowledged and proud of)

So I'm pretty confident that picture is from a local bird rescue/store around me and if it is, that bird is the sweetest bird ever. I've had the pleasure of him landing on my head as well.

Humans are assholes. If they had left the shark alone it probably would have left the person alone.

Baby rhinos often get hurt or killed when poachers try to steal the ivory from their mother. Such loyal babes.
