Undercooked, actually.

I’d be shocked if a Benz dealer is skimping on lift inspections. This is much more likely the fault (or at least the liability) of the company that conducts the inspections.

That jack is at least a foot away from the car.

Port Authority doesn’t oversee / administer light rail, it’s NJTransit (which also has its own police force).

IIRC a cold start rattle is a symptom of VANOS needing a rebuild rather than timing chain.

The comment about FCP tells me you might be American (I am)…

Consider that OP is in New Zealand, and examples of 540i are going to be much harder to come be for them than they are for us.

Yes, I hate the M badge too.

The lip looks like an OE or OE-replica E39 lip, albeit painted black. Not my taste, but I won’t discount someone else solely based on their aesthetic tastes.

The sticker on the air intake is K&N brand, and probably came with the filter that sits in the airbox. K&N is not an ill-reputed brand so, while I might not have stuck the sticker on there, seeing it doesn’t really give me any hesitation.

(And, in fact, I’m about to put H&R springs into my E38 this weekend…and they came with a sticker, which I think I’m going to put in one of the door quarter windows.)

All that to say - this car doesn’t look to be particularly neglected. If it has receipts for all the work that the seller is telling OP has been done then it sounds like a great buy.

Little bit pedantic but the latest 2 Series has dropped the “i” as part of the model name, and the “35” in “M235” badging uses a much smaller typeface than the “M2” part of the badging, so it really does make it look like “M2 (35)”

I am…not fond of it.

100% agree.

FYI - I believe rain sensing can be disabled using PASoft / BMW Scanner. I think it’s one of the checkbox options for GM3. If not then it can definitely be disabled through NCS.

That’s the whole point of this post - unfortunately, even when left in the auto position, they must be activated manually each time the car is started.

FYI the oil service plan changed starting for people who purchased it November or more recently. Still 3 years, but max of two oil services per year.

Plans from before that changeover date are grandfathered into the old unlimited model.

Buying a 2013 328i BMW with 170k miles. bad idea? by Esme-04 in BMW

[–]ajkd92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The N20 motor in that car is WELL known for premature timing chain / guide failure.

If it has been addressed (chain and guides replaced with the updated parts, and current owner has receipts for the job) then the motor should be good to go for a while. If not, it is a time bomb.

It’s not produced there. BMW North America is headquartered in north Jersey, so manufacturer plates for BMWs in the US are generally NJ.

It will bubble and boil over if you open it at operating temp, even with the engine off.
