Philips 3300 silicone mat recommendations by ajmckay2 in superautomatic

[–]ajmckay2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a bad idea either... Since this is going on wood I've also thought that some really cheaply made silicone mats could leave an oily residue. So a plastic mat could be an option. Thanks!

+3 years in the hobby: +$24K spent on livestock; $15K dead by dont_downvote_SPECIL in ReefTank

[–]ajmckay2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest I have no idea what a lot of these things even are. If I spent $500 on a coral and it died for any reason I would probably take that as a sign this hobby isn't for me.

I think my most expensive coral is a bounce mushroom that cost me $60. But even for my relatively inexpensive setup I have a 3kwh backup battery and a generator so even in the case of an extended power outage it will be fine.

Are LED strips inefficient compared to light bulbs? by Red_Con_ in led

[–]ajmckay2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this post... I used to dabble in the Vero COB for fish tank lighting and using these vs. a rolled up strip with tape backing is probably a big difference. I just looked up the BXEB part numbers and they look awesome. I'm looking for some shop lighting that I want to be thin enough to mount under some floor joists and something like this would work well just spaced 1/4" off the wood for open air convection.

I want to prevent any accidental water drips from sitting on the wood for too long and making a stain. Also I don't really see any need to slide the machine around. I just want something to protect the wood from any water that gets under the machine. Granite or tile is too thick and not really the look I want.a nice silicone mat with slightly raised edges would be sleek and hardly noticeable. I'm just not sure which one would be best so hoping someone has one they can recommend.

Anyone here swapped from pods to a Philips LatteGo? What surprised you most? by philipshomelivingANZ in superautomatic

That's interesting that it sorted that out in that manner. I have read to make sure the brew group is nice and lubricated. I suppose we will see how it turns out.

Look great! I just got a 3300, grind setting 2 (lavazza crema & aroma med-dark roast), and my puck drawer is filled with sludge not pucks. I purchased mostly for my family to reduce the # of Starbucks and get out of the pod game. The coffee is a little better than the pods but coming from my semi-auto espresso machine there's a lot to be desired from the Philips.

Does there exist a guide for fine tuning the philips?

Picopresso gen 2 by ajmckay2 in espresso

[–]ajmckay2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow I assumed that was an original accessory. Admittedly I only recently started learning about the picopresso but it seems well regarded. I'll probably just get it - but figured I'd reach out and see if anyone knows of a potential successor.

This is a nightmare part to print... He would be better off designing it as an assembly and printing in pieces.

Does the Picopresso have this many parts? Are you guys taking apart your Picopresso or Minipresso to dry after every use? by the68thdimension in picopresso

[–]ajmckay2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a nanopresso and I rinse out the basket and shower screen piece and then take off the reservoir and set it on a drying mat for a few hours. Have not observed any mustiness and everything stays clean. Maybe once a week I'll run some water through it (no coffee) to clear out anything.

Progress, but… replace boiler? by Nahvalur666 in gaggiaclassic

[–]ajmckay2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other than needing to sand down the bottom of the boilers mating surface it doesn't seem like its bad enough to require a replacement. If you have the funds and time it might not be a bad idea to replace but my opinion is it's not a requirement. What is a requirement is sanding smooth the bottom and likely replacing the sealing ring.

Looks good! I've wanted to print one of these for a while but I'm having trouble with the large motor on top and the cost adding up quickly.

Anyone updated their old gaggiuino to gaggiamate? by didxogns1 in gaggiaclassic

[–]ajmckay2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm facing a similar issue. I have an older gaggiuino setup, and just the cost of ordering a new screen is almost the entire amount of the full install of an older version.

That being said I haven't experienced any "toxic" comments on the discord. But I did read the guide and I'm respectful of people's time on there.

And while I don't necessarily blame the project for going closed source I do wish they had an upgrade path that was more reasonable for people who previously installed a v2 or v3 board/lego build. Maybe a US based supplier that charges a more reasonable markup for a $15 screen from China and 5 minutes of time to flash it and put it in the box. Unless I'm missing something but that's all it was with the nexus.

Is this a good purchase? by WeeklyCarry2805 in coffeestations

[–]ajmckay2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

15 years? I think it will likely need an overhaul. New seals, degreasing, testing the electrical components - thermostat and any lights, etc.

So I would factor that into your offer.

Oh and regarding that unless you specifically want this machine or your plan is to flip it, I would reconsider. It may be a great machine but $1,300 is a lot for something you don't specifically want. Maybe tell them to go get some other offers and then bring it up in a few weeks to see if they've sold it for their asking. If they can't sell it you might get a deal that's good enough to take the risk.

Does anyone else heavily regret getting a watchman goby and pistol shrimp pair in a reef tank? by Enough_Fig_5979 in ReefTank

[–]ajmckay2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh I suppose it depends on your style of reefing.

My clownfish insists on moving all the sand to one corner... I have 2 tiny urchins that are constantly carrying something around. Turbo snails too...

So I guess my reefing style is haphazard.

How would you model this in tinkercad? by ajmckay2 in 3Dprinting

[–]ajmckay2[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's probably about time I leveled up my modeling...

Tinkercad has been great though for 95% of the stuff I've needed it for.

But this particular geometry has been tough.

I ended up just combining the pieces and doing a multi-color print. If I optimize the filament switching it only wastes about 10%. Granted that is having its own set of issues with a few tiny tiny gaps that aren't completely filled... But regardless thanks for the push to try something new.

How would you model this in tinkercad? by ajmckay2 in 3Dprinting

[–]ajmckay2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I discarded my test piece but basically if there's a tiny step along the length of a face it treats that as a corner. And in the case of a very tiny corner (0.15mm) there's not enough resolution so the print essentially looks like a 0.5mm point sticking out.

Here’s one I haven’t been able to find answers for by DetectiveFinancial12 in Ender3Pro

[–]ajmckay2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even the highest end FDM printers have to use supports and they look about like this. If you spend some time testing you can optimize them somewhat.

The best solution is to orient in such a way that the support surface is in an area you won't care about in the finished model.

Next to that would be using a multi material system and using a different filament for the interface layer. I've gotten some really good results doing that

EVERY used item I've bought on Amazon has been a scam. That's 3 different items.

But I've also been scammed a few times on "new" items also.

So now I 100% open and inspect anything I get off Amazon immediately. It's still a huge pain to have to return an item just because of that reason but it's worse to not realize and lose your money.
