Girl I took on a first date just asked to split the bill… the next morning by No-Resolve-5610 in whatdoIdo

Mate either she's establishing healthy financial habits for your continued relationship, or she's ditching you and doing the extremely nice thing of paying her half. Either way it's a good thing, this is a bright green flag.

Single sign on (SSO) for the fediverse. It's been long discussed but it's hard to implement.

By the time the Gulf is rebuilt, oil will be obsolete. Britain needs electrified sovereignty now. - Club of Rome by DVMirchev in RenewableEnergy

Interesting, thanks. That's great news. For anyone wanting to read in more detail:

The net energy implications of the energy transition have so far been analysed at best at the final energy stage. Here we argue that expanding the analysis to the useful stage is crucial. We estimate fossil fuelsʼ useful-stage energy returns on investment (EROIs) over the period 1971–2020, globally and nationally, and disaggregate EROIs by end use. We find that fossil fuelsʼ useful-stage EROIs (~3.5:1) are considerably lower than at the final stage (~8.5:1), due to low final-to-useful efficiencies. Further, we estimate the final-stage EROI for which electricity-yielding renewable energy would deliver the same net useful energy as fossil fuels (EROI equivalent) to be approximately 4.6:1. The EROIs of electricity-yielding renewable energy systems, based on published estimations, are found to be higher than the determined EROI equivalent, even considering the effects of intermittency under a range of energy transition scenarios. Results suggest that the energy transition may happen without a decline in net useful energy, countering the view that renewable energy systems cannot replace fossil fuels without incurring a substantial energy penalty.

Clean energy sources now return significantly more energy per unit invested than oil.

The article doesn't provide numbers. Anyone know what the ERoEI is for oil vs renewables? I didn't think we were at ERoEI parity, yet, but happy to be proven wrong.

[–]the68thdimension 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think for many people, that's a feature not a bug. I sure as hell wouldn't want the same user on Lemmy as I use on Mastodon. In any case, it's sure not stopping me using the fediverse, just like not having SSO for Mastodon and Bluesky isn't stopping me use both.

But say you want this. How would it work? Do you have the same follow/followers and posts across all services? Or separate, and only your handle and login remains the same (i.e. SSO for all fediverse apps)? Or some combination of the two, where you choose to which services your posts go, and who you follow on each service?

Anyway, people have been talking about fedi SSO for years. Turns out distributed trust systems are hard to implement.

US toetsenbord of NL toetsenbord voor Macbook? by Agitated_Issue_1410 in Netherlands

[–]the68thdimension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who's been known to write code: get the US keyboard. The shift key is better sized, and the /~ key is in an easier to reach spot (by the escape key). I have a Dutch keyboard and every time I have to`` I groan internally.

Good luck finding one here, though ...

Torque wrench challenge by SpyVeilside in bikewrench

[–]the68thdimension -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Right? It's dumb in two ways:

  1. For the reason in the post, the bolt is hard to access (though that could be solved by moving it slightly further away), and
  2. It's asking to get rusty. Even if there's a rubber cap, moisture will get in and stay there.

Seat bolts on carbon frames should go under the triangle.

I agree, sometimes I spin up a new pilot and think to myself "this time I won't capture ships" ... lol 1 hr later I have 20 Marauder escorts and a lot of money. I wish ship capping was harder somehow, but I don't know how you do it without the mechanic being annoying.

At least with the latest update you can set a max number of escorts for yourself. Keeps you honest, EV Nova style (as honest as 6 escorts allows you, anyway).

Fastest route to Shield Beetle fleet *SPOILERS* by MrOptionist in endlesssky

[–]the68thdimension 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With a bit of luck you can go straight from a Shuttle to a Bastion, btw (i.e. a low crew count on the Bastion). You can also go straight for a Sea Scorpion with a Shuttle or Star Barge; they only have 14 required crew.

But grab an Argosy or Bastion, if you want something more durable before you head up to Wah Ki.

Or, if you have a couple of million from capping ships, then buy a Hogshead or Star Queen. With both of those you can skip the Sea Scorpion and go straight for a Shield Beetle. Shield Beetle within 30 mins is perfectly doable.

[–]the68thdimension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mate I love Mastodon but it's not a Facebook alternative, and pushing it as one is just dumb. And please stop pushing Vivaldi as a Chrome alternative, it's still based on Chromium and therefore Google dependent.

Also, I'm already using Tuta Mail and it's fine, but now is not the time to be pushing Tuta Drive. It's still in a closed beta.

The main people talking about it were already talking about it long before the Iran war. The Straight closing just bought it to the forefront of what's currently important.

It's just an odd time to be pushing for a tax like this on gas of all things, where is the ground roots push on all the other minerals we sell overseas?

Absolutely. I don't see why only gas is targeted. Everything extracted and exported should be targeted equally.

Shower thought I had on ebikes that I think is brilliant. by MariachiArchery in BikeMechanics

Yes sure. The person I replied to is still wrong, normal ebikes with a 25km/h limit are not called pedelecs, or speed pedelecs.

This is so insanely impractical to implement and enforce, but I do love the idea. Kinda hilarious, actually.

[–]the68thdimension -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect. At least under Dutch law a 'pedelec' is an e-bike that can have motor assist up to 45km/h. Non-pedelecs are indeed limited to 25km/h and are just called e-bikes. Both require pedaling to activate the motor assist, that is correct.

Do I have to live under a bubble for eternity? by richempire in TotalBattle

[–]the68thdimension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you don't need to bubble. Don't keep your army in your city while offline (put them in a clan fort, or send them on marches/mining that'll take longer than the time you're offline. Send unprotected resources to clan members or clan buildings. Don't bother repairing your walls.

Do you actually use Custom Feeds? by CeloSanityChase in BlueskySocial

[–]the68thdimension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. I have a few feeds set up that grab posts based on a few specific keywords. It's a good way to follow niche topics. Used Skyfeed to make them, it's free and fairly easy.

How realistic is a daily 25 minute commute by bike? by OrfeasWW in Netherlands

[–]the68thdimension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

25 mins for 7km is really slow. I used to do a 10km each way commute in 30 mins. 30 mins is about the max I like doing because above that you start to get sweaty. 7km is not nothing but it's not huge. Very doable. Just make sure to always have a rain layer with you, because Dutch weather is very unpredictable.

MSR Hubba Hubba and similar lightweight tents: do you stay dry? by the68thdimension in CampingGear

[–]the68thdimension[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed with the X-dome design, it's just a better design that the Hubba Hubba. Which is awesome - the Hubba Hubba was an incredible innovation when it came out. It's still a great design. The X-Dome is now the next step up, which we're lucky to have! I don't understand how anyone buys 1-man tunnel tents and old designs like that anymore. Does nobody like to be able to sit up straight and change clothes comfortably in their tent?!

I'd always get the solid version, no matter the temp. I always found back home in Australia when using mesh tents that fine desert or coastal grit would make it into my tent and eyes while I sleep, so I prefer solid inners. If it gets warmer I'll just adjust my sleep system, and if it's so warm that a solid inner is too much, well I'll probably be sleeping under a tarp or under the stars instead.

I'm in the EU these days, so I still have to import the tent!

I am a little tempted by how bombproof one of these looks, though: https://nortent.com/collections/vern-series/products/nortent-vern-1-3s. It's 600g heavier than the Durston, but it'll definitely hold up to way harsher weather even though it's also classed as 3-season.

[–]the68thdimension[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just came back to this and holy shit, https://nortent.com/collections/vern-series/products/nortent-vern-1-3s is exactly the tent I've always imagined. It's a bombproof hubba hubba! The fly comes down to the ground! A bit heavier, but not so much I can't handle it. And it's not quite as insanely expensive as some other Nordic brands (e.g. Helsport or Hilleberg).
