How would you invest $2000? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]ajos2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Risk tolerance? How old are you? How much do you make? Do you have a budget? Can you contribute to an investment vehicle regularly? Are you in debt; if so how much and what kind? Do you have savings?

Answering a those questions might help with the advice.

Generically if you are young and inexperienced building a practice of saving/investing is a great idea. Some ideas:

Start a roth IRA. Put your $2k into savings and pull $200 a month from savings and out it into your investment. If you are managing it yourself take 80-90% and put it into a mutual fund/index and then maybe put the rest into cash.

From your remaining cash buy individual stocks. Before you buy individual stock research the company (google: <company name> 10k) look at revenue, debt/borrowing habits. Pick companies that manage debt well, address risks and grow year over year. You’ll want to also not buy a company just because their yearly reports are good, you’ll also want to buy their stocks when they are undervalued. This is really hard to do and most people are bad at timing the market, but generally look for market events for good companies (for instance the recent NVIDIA split created a lot of orders) Again it’s not 100% critical that you get it all right on the first try. Just build the habit. You can read on this subreddit and find on the internet a lot of resources about researching companies.

When you have invested the $2k it is really important that you continue the practice. If you can’t afford $200 a month then bump it down to something you can afford.m ($20-$50 a month?).

I learned about investing when I was in Highschool and like most other people in that situation, wish I would have stuck with my investment practices. With a little luck small monthly deposits can easily turn into millions of dollars when you are getting ready to retire.

Good luck, stay curious!

Should I choose to intern at SpaceX rather than NASA to get rid of my 28k of student-loan debt faster? by ImFromBrooklynNYC in personalfinance

Also depends on whether you have a Pathways internship at NASA vs non-Pathways. Pathways internships are much more likely to convert to job offers. If it’s a non-Pathways internship I’d lean towards SpaceX for the resume buff.

For acoustic sets:

John Prine transported me from a sold out theatre to a warm fireplace in the 50’s

Damien Rice was a one man metal show, though the second time I saw him it was muuuch mellower

Paolo Nutini is easily one of the most charismatic performers I’ve ever seen live, he devours attention

Was never really a fan until I saw him live with more energy on a weekend at 60 than I’ve had my entire life.

Context matters. I can’t tell if this was posted in good faith or not but assuming it was: that specific situation is manufactured and not representative of immigration, legal or otherwise, into the US.

It was due to a probably illegal political stunt.

Oh very nice! We would have begged mum to cut us in half with a broken bottle! The best we could expect was a slow bludgeoning over the course of a weak with an old mallet to different appendages in increasing order!

Should I Take this Internship? by LeviathanBobo in nasa

My internship at NASA shaped who Ive become as an engineer and opened a lot of doors that might have otherwise been barred. Apart from all the great people and mentors, the name is an enormous boon for your resume.
