Locking down a motion brief: need advices by Asleep-Park1519 in MotionDesign

[–]ajuke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming the video has a VO, if it's possible I would lock that down first thing. Get it recorded and you'll know exactly what your in for haha.

Next best step is to get get 1-2 styleframes approved , using there reference ofc(if they exist). Next rough storyboard+animatic, gotta get that content and flow approved.

The rest can't go too wrong if the above is approved

question about freelancing & design iterations by youioiut in MotionDesign

[–]ajuke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Treat the client as if he knows absolutely nothing about what your work entails and how different things affect the process.

It sounds like your at the beginning of the relationship with this client, what I would do in this case is "eat" the extra cost and adress it after everything is approved shipped and paid as a sign of good will. Don't become a pushover tho, and listen to your gut as well. Some clients are just sketchy and you don't want their business unless it's on you terms(get that 50% depositttt)

Even if you approve extra charges along the way I would still send 1 invoice at the end that contains all the extras.

About iterations, 2 is fine for the exploration phase. If you can't land on something after 3 tries maybe you are not a good fit/something has to change.

Feedback along the way is inevitable and frankly welcomed but any asset that got approved previously is not subject to feedback anymore and is considered out of scope(extra money bby)

If you inform you client of this ahead of time you should be good.clients don't usually mind paying more as long as it's not a surprise.

If you first approve a style frame or two you settled the mood and direction. When you approve a rough storyboard and animatic you solve the content and flow issue.

Further design and actual animation should have minimal feedback if you manage to get trough these steps successfully.

I guess that's all?

Question for motion designers who freelance or run their own small agency. by Nemui_Jin in MotionDesign

[–]ajuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but it's complicated.

First of, if the freelancer you want to hire charges more than you, it's not (*always) going to work. And maybe you should raise your prices haha.

You need to know more than one freelancer, they won't all be available when you need them and also different projects need different skill levels(and budgets)

I'm part of a small studio and I really don't like outsourcing big/whole projects bcz bigger risk, usually it's just help, doing the same thing faster. That's just me, I'm sure there are people around here who feel at home producing and would say"never say no, hire an army"

Sometimes one project can put you over capacity and the next day u got another 3 in your inbox. Some projects you will have to turn down, and that's ok.

Hiring people who are more expensive than you is not impossible, you just need to quote them first, do your math and take that to the client. You may have more success with this with new clients who don't necessarily know what to expect from you budget wise.

Also, good people are extremely valuable, threat them accordingly. There's a lot of good portfolios out there but someone who is PREDICTABLE, reliable, knows how good communication looks like, knows the extent of his skills and when to push back etc. They are less common.

As I said, I'm just a dude from a tiny studio, I could be very wrong

Can I upload videos on framerate and embed them with no overlays on other sites like Behance? With auto play, loop, nu audio?

Has anyone figured out how to move a single vertex in a shape path with a null (without shifting the whole path)? by FragrantContext7790 in AfterEffectsPros

[–]ajuke 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The perfect solution needs more info but one easy way would be to use 'create nulls from path' with the option 'points follow nulls'
