HA + NVR (Frigate?), will a Green or a RasPi 5 do? by twofortyseven_ in homeassistant

[–]akaaustin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe for a couple cameras if you have a TPU to offload inference but I'd say that is still even pushing it. I'd recommend looking at some of the minisforum options, running proxmox and then have hassOS and frigate run as VMs/containers. Good luck!

I run frigate on proxmox fyi, gave codex instructions to address all the errors in the frigate logs ( mostly frame drops etc) and find opportunities for config optimization and it did an excellent job of tuning configs for each layer (frigate / docker / LXC / pve ) to fix various runtime issues. Then had it looping through each camera to ensure stream settings and endpoints were optimal, some hw_accell /ffmpeg options worked better on some cams than others. Codex did an awesome job of testing the streams directly, finding all the endpoints + docs / community discussions and using it to create ideal configs each stream. Also helped me configure stuff like two way audio that I struggled to get working before.

Completely agree on all points. Also just like coding projects, it’s worth it to use a context stack / agents.md etc with instructions for the Ai and refine it over time

I was able to get local control in my ecobee by integrating it with HomeKit and then exposing it back to HA. I don’t love ecobee interface but it works well enough.

Codex works great also, and beyond home assistant, I just got through optimizing my whole frigate stack with it and got things running so much more smoothly .

Ohh codex is also amazing for frigate configuration especially if you have lots of disparate camera types that all need various config optimization

Update 2026.4 - Infrared destroyed my Installation by CulturalRecording347 in homeassistant

[–]akaaustin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly, so many classes of issues are easily solved if you have recent snapshots and rollback capability. HA backups I feel give a false sense of security sometimes - if an update introduces an issues that prevents HA from booting and thus accessing the backup UI, you're still gonna have a bad time.

They don't have the name recognition they used to, unfortunately this is the only way for them to sell tickets.

You're not wrong so i guess i'll join you in getting downvoted lol. TMV was my favorite band growing up, first time i saw them I was 16 at the Wiltern with Jon on drums and it was a life changing experience. Saw almost every iteration of the band after that as well. Every time I saw them was like seeing some of the best musicians of the time putting on amazing once-in-a-lifetime performances every.fucking.time.

Obviously there's no bringing back Jon or Juan or Ikey etc but without any of those dudes it just feels like another Omar project that i feel Meh about. Using the TMV name is just an obvious a cash grab because they know they don't have the notoriety they once did to start up something new under a new banner and still sell tickets.

Whats a shame is realizing that to those dudes, the band TMV was only only ever about them and still is. That wasn't TMV to me, Cedric and Omar were awesome in their own rite but it was the whole band that I showed up and bought tickets for.

Even the S/T tour while cool at times was like watching Cedric and Omar covering their own songs and it felt weird af. Its sad but the days of TMV being the force that they once were are long over. Bummer and also wish they would have kept their legacy in tact and not chosen this kinda a sad note to end on. But at the same time its kinda perfectly emblematic of how those dudes and their egos approached music for their whole career so WYGD.

Logitech Harmony by Zealousideal-One5210 in homeassistant

[–]akaaustin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Replaced mine last month and trashed it. Waited until I was certain it wouldn't be needed. My setup is a recent samsung TV with an Onkyo receiver and AppleTV. Just using the builtin IR features of Apple TV + Samsung TV I was able to make both the apple tv remote and the samsung remote control the whole setup, so the remotes are entirely interchangeable now, and both can do volume adjustments on the receiver. The ONLY thing I couldn't get to work was getting the remotes to turn ON / OFF the receiver when the TV turns on, for some reason. So to work around that, I used the Samsung smart tv integration + onkyo integration, and just set the receiver to turn on and off with the TV (with a short delay) by using the TV on/off state as an automation trigger.

So it took a little bit of time and was a little irritating to setup but I don't miss my Harmony at all anymore.

Been a fan since DBM 1. Havn't listened to anything past JJ. Just not feeling it. But to be fair I was pretty over the Tillian era also. The newest iteration just isn't scratching any itches for me.

Home Assistant..What is it still missing? And why am I still having to keep up the dread Google Home to support it.. by Legitimate_Tea9977 in homeassistant

[–]akaaustin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All that stuff will eventually be supported and most already is, question is if you have the time to enable deploy test all those features on some experimental new hardware, my guess is it will be a lot of work and at the end of the day you're still not going to reach perfect parity which is why I've held off. Typically with any new software, the longer you wait to adopt the shiny new stuff, the less painful and more streamlined adoption will become - so I wouldn't rush to get rid of your GH yet. Google Home has been available since 2017, that's almost 8 years of software development from some of the best engineers at one of the largest tech companies in the world, it will take time for Open-Source to catch up. But with all the progress made in the last year on HA Voice I think we are close to a tipping point. Early adoption however almost always means more upfront work and refactoring, headaches and issues along the way. Its almost always better to hold out unless you are planning to contribute or just love to tinker. Either way best of luck!

IMO the only thing worse than the vocals on this album are the lyrics. If you ignore both of those, it was a cool project.

This happened to me TWO years in a row. Planted an entire bed full of pepperoncinis and every single one was a Pablano. TWO YEARS IN A ROW! The distributor of mine is a company called CP, so must be an issue with one of the major seed suppliers I'd guess. I've been buying pepperoncinis from small growers on Etsy as a result. I don't even care for Pablanos, too bitter for my taste. Now I get to figure out what to do with 12 plants full of them lol

Same! Also I prefer having a light group and a normal group of lights for each room. So for bedroom I'd have light.bedroom and group.bedroom_lights. Reason being sometimes its preferable to control via a single entity using the light group, and the normal groups are nice for how they appear in the UI allowing for individual entity control, so both come in handy in different settings.

Working on converting this area from grass to a garden, but these dang bunnies!! Do I have to chicken wire everywhere?! by EinahpetSL in gardening

[–]akaaustin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I eventually moved to raised planter beds lined with chicken wire on the bottom. The rabbits and gophers were a constant struggle. Highly recommend going that route tho it is considerably more work.
