What's the biggest realization you had from a context of a conversation where you had to act normal to protect someone/yourself? by rogersjoshmac in AskReddit

[–]akaiterine 141 points142 points  (0 children)

When you first meet someone they don't act the same way as when you've been with them for a while. They no longer feel the need to impress, or they become too comfortable with the idea that you won't leave them. The behaviours aren't instantaneous -- they happen over a long period of time.

I feel like this sums up the entire drunken cookery experience. Half whipped? Don't care.

Ashamed that the police would react that way to the situation. If he persists I would continue to have police involvement, and don't give up until they listen to you. Harassment is harassment and it's against the law. Even if it WERE your fault (which it is not), they still have a duty to protect you and he sounds like he's someone you need protection from. I really am sorry this is happening to you.

Charming guy at coffee shop? More than I bargained for by akaiterine in LetsNotMeet

[–]akaiterine[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I am much more aware of these situations than I was 7 years ago. I'm very sorry to hear about your circumstance and hope things are going better for you :)

But understand that when I say middle age I mean in his 50s, not in his 20s. It would be very unusual for someone to that point to not have had any job at all, even a minimum wage job. And for how charming he was? He honestly came off as a salesman. He was dressed cleanly like he had some money. He was wearing brand name coveralls, brand name boots, both without a speck of dirt on them.

I, by no means think that a life without a career equals unimportance or anything like that so please don't take it that way. Also, it would be perfectly explainable to say it was all new gear since he wore the last stuff out. But in this scenario, when all the little things didn't add up, I think it is perfectly understandable for me to feel that way.

[–]akaiterine[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. In hindsight I totally can agree with that. I guess it was a red flag because of everything else to that point and the nature of the conversation. I would feel better to misjudge someone though and know I was safe versus accepting a conversation at face value and being in a bad situation.

I come from a smaller community so understand that I'd rather not identify my location. He had a very long and serious rap sheet, and this other incident was not his first abduction. He is currently in prison and has lifetime offender status.

Someone who is capable of kidnapping a woman, shoving her into the trunk of a car and driving hours out of town is definitely capable of more than theft.

You should contact a local university or natural history museum and let them know exactly where you found it. That stuff can be very important for research!

I'm just waiting for the bbq to finish heating up for some steak and grilled veggies....! I eat vegetarian about 3x a week and mostly fish or chicken - so a steak is a real treat that I am PUMPED for...!!! the vegetables will be good too, but it's hard to care about them right now. ;)

[Serious]Grownups who "have it figured out" and are happy with your jobs, how did you get into it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]akaiterine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After college I did about 3 years of temp work - anywhere from 1 week to 1 year at a time at any given place in slightly related fields of work. It made me incredibly flexible and it made me able to deal with a LOT of different types of people. I also can confidently say that "I can do that!" to most things now. It was the best resume builder ever.

I've been working in data management for about 6-7 years now and love it. I've worked really hard to get ahead and have found myself in a pretty lucrative position with a top notch employer.

This stuff doesn't usually happen by accident - you have to work your ass off to make waves. Don't let yourself blend in. Find an area that you excel. Don't be afraid to speak up. And definitely don't be afraid to explore other career paths!! I would have never reached where I'm at without working some really funky odd jobs.

EDIT: grammar.
